We went to Kanha national park hoping to see tigers in the wild, so awoke just before sunrise and climbed into a jeep to track down our 'prey'. Throughout the morning we saw many deer and moneys but no tigers. As we drove around the dirt tracks we saw vultures flying to a patch of grass and could just make out the body of a dead deer. As we watched something must of scared birds because suddenly 20 or 30 vultures took to the air, flying in all directions. Having these huge birds flying all around us was very impressive. Once the sun was fully up our driver advised that the heat would drive the tigers into the shady bushes but the occasional pug marks showed they were near-by. We transferred from the jeep to an ... read more

27 Nov - our final early morning game drive and 2 elephant rides in Kanha! Can't see very well on the first ride to take photos but the second ride is fantastic and our best sighting. We're in the heart of the jungle, riding an elephant with Ginny and Liam and watch a tiger sleeping peacefully. Marc and John then arrive on another elephant waking up the tiger and then our elephant gets a bit too close resulting in a huge growl, captured perfectly on camera by Liam. Just as we're getting back into the jeep to head back to the park entrance a tiger walks onto the road, right in front of the jeeps!!! Several jeeps follow him for 10 minutes, he is completely unperturbed by the vehicles, humans and cameras, an amazing sight. When ... read more

Day 9: Oct. 11 -- Kahna Nat'l Park, Chitvan Lodge My last entry was very brief because I was whisked away to dinner. The Lodge has been over the top. We have a wake up call at 5 am, and are served tea and coffee as requested. By 5:30, we load into a jeep to go for a nature drive. Mid-morning, in the park, we have breakfast, consisting of hard-boiled eggs, paneer on white bread sandwiches, tea, coffee, crackers, English biscuits/cookies, and fruit. We drive in the park looking at birds, flowers, spiderwebs, barasinghr (yes, I think I spelled it right), spotted deer, wild boars, guar, etc. We are always looking for the tiger. Where the forest is dense, Tiger walks on the road. Sometimes, we see tiger pug marks (footprints) in the sand in the ... read more

Oct. 9, 2008 (Laura's 40th birthday) -- Presently Kahna Nat'l Park; came today from Indira _____ Pench Nat'l Park The lodge we are at is fantastic. Very beautiful. I just finished a cooking lesson. The chef showed me sauces for vegetables and bread today. Tomorrow, dessert and meats. They will give me the recipes before I leave. Yesterday, in Pench, we saw Tiger! She was beautiful, napping under a lantana vine. We took the jeep nearby and then road an elephant into the vine. Tigers can also be sighted by chance on or near the road, but when it is sighted by this method, it is called "Tiger Show." The guide asks, "Do you want to see Tiger Show?" We thought it was some hoaky tourist thing... but we said yes. Glad we did! This ... read more

It had been three wonderful days so far at Kanha National Park. Morning and evening safaris each day. Langurs (primates) and Chitals (spotted deer) and Barking Deer and Peacocks and Indian Buffalo and Wild Boar and Sambar (Indian Deer) and plenty of incredibly beautiful birds. Like the Indian Blue Jay and the Kingfisher. And we'd had a our moments viewing the beautiful Barasingha or Swamp Deer, a species that is only thriving in this one location in the world. And only thriving due to intensive management to promote its survival. We'd even joined in the tiger frenzy the first morning! Word had spread that a tiger had been sighted as he settled in for a long, lazy, hot day in the cool shade. We paid our 600 Rupees and jumped on the elephant back for the ... read more

Hey All, It’s been a while but we’re finally back online! The internet has yet to reach tiger country! It’s been a manic week or so but excellent all the same. I think we left you in Varanasi, due to catch the 9.30pm train on the 19th, so this is where we’ll pick it up. Our journey from Varanasi didn’t quite go to plan. On arriving at the station we found our train to be 4 hours late. While not exactly ecstatic at the prospect of spending 4 hours in an exceptionally busy, smelly and generally manic station, the delay was not unexpected. Fortunately, in their wisdom, the Indian’s actually have dormitories at the station for stranded travelers like ourselves and at Rs50 per bed per night, we practically bit the guys hand off. Thus this ... read more
