Today the travel agents got back to me - I CAN fly to Sri Lanka - for FREE! Wow. I really didn't believe I could, and so today I even took out more money, and yesterday I planned my way back to Mumbai. So now I have to choose between a new country and seeing more of India. It's such a tough choice!! I think I'm gonna go to Sri Lanka, though. The fact that I got the flight change for free, and I've heard such great things about Sri Lanka....I can't miss it! I'm sure I'll end up coming back to India in the future in order to see MORE - if I stayed here till I'd seen everything...well, even an entire lifetime wouldn't be enough! So I think I'm flying to Colombo tomorrow morning ... read more

My flight situation is still up in the air - with the travel agents at Sri Lankan Airways telling me everyday to 'come back tomorrow'...is this the hypothetical tomorrow which never comes? i believe it may be. and so I have taken it upon myself to get excited about making my way back up to Mumbai. The more I think about it, the more things I have yet to see in India - and so why hurry to Sri Lanka?!? Tomorrow I've decided to take a day trip to Varkala - a trip that I already tried yesterday, but the bus never showed up :o ! So tomorrow is attempt number 2, and I'm sure I'll succeed - I'll just make sure I get an earlier start! I've moved hotels to a cheaper budget hotel called ... read more

On the morning of the 15th, Michael and I set off for Alleppey. We were looking to meet other tourists to share a house boat with, so we thought the earlier the better! The bus ride went well, with me finding a place in the women's section of the bus and Michael having the pleasant experience of having a man attempt to sleep on his shoulder in the back of the bus! Once we got to Alleppey, we started walking along the river bank to check out all the hundreds of house boats. They all look about the same (will add a picture in the -hopefully near- future) but have varied number of rooms, lounging areas, and decks. After about 2 hours of being hassled by every single boat man and looking through most of ... read more

I left off at Guruvayur where I was visiting Neptune for a couple of days. My last day there was full of activity. We woke up early in order to make it to the Guruvayur Devaswom Elephant Sanctuary. This sanctuary holds over 60 elephants! We stayed at the sanctuary for about an hour, watching the elephants being bathed and taking lots and lots of pictures! As I was taking a video, one of the elephants got its trunk full of sand and sprayed it ALL over me! Now...the sand went everywhere, and since it was a hot day and I was sweating - it also stuck to me everywhere! When we got back to Neptune's apartment, we didn't have too much time before my train to Cochin was leaving, so I packed in record time ... read more

Finally made it to Kerala! My last day in Palolem was the perfect conclusion to my 'longer than expected' stay - just laid on the beach for the day and then I went to say bye to a few people - Nick over at Smuggler's Inn, Jules on the beach, and by a stroke of luck I saw Ayelet along the main street. She was about to go to Cool Breeze for dinner - which meant I had a chance to celebrate going down to Kerala with an amazing piece of Banoffee Pie! At 11:00 I took a taxi to the train station (had a great chat with the taxi man - which won me a free trip ! wohoo!) and sat down near some other tourists. They were all going to Kerala, and so ... read more

We left Fort Kochin, headed for the Wyanard Wildlife Park- an 8 hr drive away - north. We drove through some towns - I dont think they saw too many westerners as we got lots of waves and smiles. We started to climb to reach high altitude through twisting, narrow roads. We saw completly different vegetation- rubber trees, pepper plants, tea plantations etc. We eventually got to 2100m safetly and found our accomodation for 2 nights, a lodge in the middle of a national park- completely quiet. Lots of time to reflect. That night we went on an open top jeep and began our safari mission.... to find elephants, deer, bison and a very illusive tiger. How exciting! As I stood there bobbing about searching out wildlife, I could not have imagined doing anything else, ever ... read more

Hello again! Well we left Palolem kicking and screaming, and took a flight to Kochin in the state of Kerala- right near the southern tip of India. We were again greeted with smiles aplenty and people being very friendly, naturally I was very suspicious of 'help' but it was totally unneccessary. Fort Kochi is a colonial town full of character, we had a ricksaw driver take us around the city to see all the sights- some known and some not so known! People from Kochi are mostly Christain or Hindu- however there is one Jewish family and so had the only synagogue in India-very impressive. He also took us to see a huge elephant - but the poor thing couldnt even turn around- he had it in his back yard. We also visited a traditional Kerala ... read more

We slowly worked our way down from Pushkar heading south to Kerala. After approximately 45 hours aboard glorious Indian Rail (which we’re often proudly told is the largest employer in the world - take that Wal-Mart!) we arrived. Rumor has it that after spending time in the North, Kerala can seem like another country. In many ways, it is a very unique state. It is one of the most densely populated, culturally mixed and politically unusual in the world. It is home to 747 people per square kilometer, compared to 3 in Canada. Despite this high density, Kerala has the highest literacy rate and best health care in India and is the only state where women outnumber men. Because of the preference for boy children there are less than 93 women for every 100 men in ... read more

Am definitely starting to get used to India - it does take a while. Not to say that she can't be a challenging and spirited hostess at times. But I have definitely shifted down a few gears over the couple of weeks since we left and I am able to find some peace with the good lady. To see the beauty and the sense that India can make as well as the ridiculous and downright shocking. At times still have to close my eyes to things - like a child - that I know I can't do anything about until they are out of my line of vision, a primitive strategy but has proved the most effective and the most conducive to a good night's sleep. We have travelled quite a distance in only a few ... read more
