Around Cochin (Kochi) Collected from our hotel at 9.00am by our new driver Raj and we drove off towards the old fort area where we met with our guide for the morning. Surprise surprise our First Lady guide Aguita, and charming she was. Well educated and very knowledgeable about the area. After a very short drive we visited a co-operative washroom which is unlike anything experienced before. One up from dunking smelly old clothes in the river but below the Blighty launderettes. Because labour is so cheap in India there is no reliance on technical frill, so interesting use of rocks to beat the old clobber clean, environmentally drying on a line and finished off with a charcoal powered iron. Pretty big operation run as a cooperative that the locals use. Next stop was to a ... read more

February 19… After the morning safari, I took a car from Sasan Gir back to Junagadh to catch the train to Ahmedabad. The train departed exactly on time (first time that’s happened here), and I travelled in AC2 class – no one else in the compartment for the first few hours, which was nice. In Rajkot, this lovely older Indian couple arrived to share the compartment. He was a businessman, she a retired politician at the Gujarati state level, I think and they were headed to Ahmedabad for a conference the next day. They were so helpful at Ahmedabad, making sure the tuk-tuk driver was giving me a fair price for the ride to the hotel – too cute! We arrived in Kochi, a seaside city near the southern tip of India, at 6:00 a.m. after taking a train from Mysore to Bangalore followed by another overnight train. Drowsy after having gotten little sleep due to our cabin mates' late night noisy chats, we hailed a rickshaw to the peninsula of Fort Kochi where we'd booked a guesthouse called the Vintage Inn. Our host was very nice and accommodating, showing us promptly to our room (which was huge!) so we could get some sleep before going back downstairs to check in. We originally only planned to stay in Kochi for a few nights, but its clean, quiet neighborhoods and laid back atmosphere, as well as its vague resemblance to Charleston, made us want to stay longer. We really needed a break from the frequent train ... read more

Lenze takto to tu nefunguje, vraj musia byt baliky zabalene este v zvlast plachte (mozno nemusia, len ma postarka natiahla a dala zarobit svojmu kumpanovy).

Pri lodke uz cakali dalsi ludia,2 francuzi, svedsky, anglicky a este dake dva pari. Nakonec sme na lodi boli 16-turisti.Este pri jednom moste sme nakladali dalsich 4 ludi. Guide ... read more

No aspon ma zhruba navigovali k bus zastavke. Do fort cochin a mg road ide prvy bus o 6/30. Moc ludi neslo z letiska, zhruba 7 ludi ... read more

QUIRKSVILLE Boasting over half a millennium of history trading with colonials, Cochin is one quirky corner of India's west coast. The Portuguese, Dutch and of course British influence reflects itself in the city's skeleton but the sounds, smells and faces remain Indian to the core. A walk from Fort Cochin to Jew Town via Mattancherry, about 30 - 45 minutes non-stop, reveals the gamut of those quirks. Begin at the enormous Chinese fishing nets at the tip of Fort Cochin, weave past street-side seafood vendors and listen to the chatter of Karnatakan women imploring tourists to; "just look at my jewellery, looking is free". Move on through to Mattancherry where the legacy of a centuries old spice trade is still in full swing in a manner that hasn't contemporised itself for generations. Before you know it, ... read more
