Kochi We arrived in Kochi with around a week to chill before the wedding, and fully intended to stay there. Little did we know that there's actually ball all to do in Kochi, except drink and eat, not so bad for a holiday but not enough for an adventure. Having checked the guide book for things to do, the most touristy thing was Mattancherry Palace. Quite how this is a Palace I’m not too sure. Built by by the Portuguese in the 1500s as a gift to the Raja of Cochin, but more reminiscent of a community centre built in the 70s. I don't know what the Raja did or said to the Portuguese, but he must've upset them. (Mum, you have no idea how much I had to resist the temptation to swear then!). The ... read more

So I've set off on my second adventure, as you can see by the title I’m going back to India. My mate Dave's coming with me this time so hopefully I can par some of the stress off onto him!. Unlike last time India isn't the final destination, Nepal, Bhutan?, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are all on the cards, budget dependant of course! Eventually me and Dave will go our separate ways with me going to Aus for a working holiday, and Dave either staying in Asia or going home....I guess it'll depend on how much the lady boys hit his pocket? Haha. We've flown into Cochin, Kerela in the south to start the journey. This has mostly been planned around the fact we're in the area for Anoop's (friend from ... read more

Goa and Kerala I’ve now arrived in Bangalore after a really relaxing trip to Goa and Kerala for one week. My journey further down South India started with an overnight train from Mumbai CST, the station where they filmed the final scene in Slumdog Millionaire, to Karmali Station in Goa, where I took a tuktuk to Anjuna beach the place where I’d chosen to stay for the following four nights. Anjuna is a touristy beach but a lot quieter than the more popular Candolim or Baga beaches. I arrived at Roadside Hostel and was shown to my room, a shared female dorm, to be greeted by three really friendly girls who straight away invited me to the beach that afternoon. I spent my first afternoon in Goa exploring the Anjuna flea market which occurs every Wednesday ... read more

I started my year and a half trip in Fort Kochi, Kerela. Exploring for just 3 days, I feel I saw alot. Starting with some churches in town, seeing how they dry out ginger to the failrly large laundrey place, all on the first day. A local tuk tuk driver named Nas took me around all day and also showed me some amazing local places to eat. The 2nd day I took a trip to Munnar, up the mountains with some people at the hostel. Nice things to see & managed to do alot of catching up on sleep on drive there & back! Also saw the backwaters on Allepy before getting sick from some ice a juice I had and my final day and spending 12 hours with a fever. The overnight train to Goa ... read more

On Sunday afternoon we were not allowed into the base as new volunteers had arrived to start their adventure. We counted ourselves lucky to have been at the base with so many others as there were only 2 new starts bringing the total of volunteers for the next 2 weeks to only 6. To kill time we went out for lunch with everyone to a snazzy art cafe and then Marc braved an Indian barber. When considering the language barrier, you could say the final outcome was a relative success. And only for 60p! Now that our work in Kerala is finished, we wish Dave all the best with improvements at Dil Se and St Louis and good luck to future construction volunteers. Although the work was tough, we feel like only a small improvement has ... read more

Our second week of work began by preparing the walls inside Dil Se so that they could be painted on. We swept and scrubbed and sanded the walls of the main entrance room and the first classroom and luckily managed to finish both rooms in one day! The day was followed by another beach clean which allowed us to chat to some locals, including two boys hoping to go to Edinburgh university to study. On Tuesday, Dave decided we deserved a change of scene and he managed to get his hands on a jet wash. We spent the morning clearing the mounds of rubbish, bricks, tools and old toys from around Dil Se. Along the way we were met by some nasty surprises including cockroaches and spiders the size of our hands! Jet washing began and ... read more

As our trip in India draws to a close, we begin to become more relaxed in our approach to a new place. We're practically winding down and preparing ourselves for our next journey (in a way). After enjoying some beach time in the beautiful Alleypey, Kochi is our next and last destination in India (althoug technically its Chennai as we fly from there). More of a city with a fishing port, many people have fell in love with Kochi and it's relaxed pace. Us falling in love with it would be going too far, but we've definitely had enough of India's big cities at this point. Thankfully most of the places we've visited in the south of India are a world away from areas such as Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Cows are few and far between, ... read more

Yesterday all the new volunteers were shown round some of the different locations that GVI is involved in. These locations are mainly visited by volunteers on the education programme along with sports coaching programme and art programme. First we went to Cotolengo which is a school run by nuns for children and adults with special needs. They were having an assembly in their main hall so we sat with them and got up to sing 'the wheels on the bus' with actions, which they loved and sang a further 3 times. They were so well behaved and very welcoming. Next we went to visit Santhom Slum, where we originally thought our construction project was going to be. The GVI staff showed us the playground that they had built there recently and the new housing. The sanitation ... read more

On Saturday we started our volunteering project with GVI. This is a charity which operates all over the world through different specialised projects in certain areas of deprivation. After arriving at the project base, we met the rest of the volunteers and GVI staff. There is a good mix of Cockney's, Northerner's, Aussie's and Yanks in the group however we are the only people volunteering on the construction project. The last two days have been filled with risk assessments, trying local cuisine and getting to know people. The dorms we are staying in consist of small bunk beds and old dusty fans. The first night there was a 3 hour long thunder storm which caused a power cut. I almost melted to death without the fan on but of course Marc slept through the whole thing. ... read more

Edinburgh to Fort Kochi We have arrived safely in Fort Kochi in India's southern state of Kerala. We were anticipating some troubles on our journey due to having a connecting flight but all in all, it went relatively smoothly and there was no fall outs. Top marks go to Etihad for the splendid service received on both flights. It was refreshing to experience this, especially when my last flight was a Ryanair 707 to Magaluf. Our taxi driver informed us that Kerala is a proud socialist state and that it leads the way for healthcare and literacy throughout India (we'll take his word for it). After arriving in the early hours of the morning, we slept through most of our first day. We did manage to explore the monsoon soaked town of Fort Kochi for a ... read more
