I booked the Crowne Plaza Kochi hotel thinking I had picked free cancellation option - for 3 nights over the Christmas period - apparently I was sorely mistaken. Unfortunately I had to book 2 rooms as there are no family suites which is why I was looking for free cancellation option. Now that I have found something else that suits our needs better with young children, I have tried to cancel but am being hit with not 1 but 2 cancellation fees. Both rooms x1 night. I selected the waive option in booking.com to no avail. I have also contacted the hotel via booking.com explaining my mistake and offering to pay for 1 room for the first night. No dice. It's like as if it's not peak holiday season & they won't be able to re-sell ... read more

After a short flight from Colombo we are back in India in Kerala State , Cochi which is an old Portuguese town. The airport is in the new commercial part but we are picked up by "Reggie" and taken to Fort Cochi which is the old port and Old Harbour Hotel which is a lovely old colonial building. We are here for one night but then back in 6 days for another night and then to Bangaram Is for 4 nights and back to hotel again. We are quite keen to have a drink and the hotel has beer and Indian wine but we decide to go out to find a wee bar. We pretty quickly find out that there is no such thing and in fact there is only one government wine shop (wine shop ... read more

Day 13 & 14: Ooty & Cochin 30 September - 1 October 2017 After breakfast, we left Ooty, and drove to Cochin (a journey of about 300 km/ 7 hrs drive approx). The commercial capital of Kerala and the most cosmopolitan of the state’s cities, Cochin or Kochi have long been eulogized in tourist literature as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Strategically located on the east–west sea route, Cochin is Kerala’s major port, boasting of one of the finest natural harbours in the world, which forms the hub around which the city revolves. With its wealth of historical associations and its setting on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsula, the city of Kochi perfectly reflects the eclecticism of Kerala. Apart from being a major commercial hub, Kochi is also a major tourist attraction in ... read more

The northern leg of our tour complete, we headed south on a four-hour flight to Cochin. The flight was straightforward, but it took us another two hours to drive to our hotel in Cochin (now renamed Kochi) due to heavy traffic. It was immediately noticeable that we were in the South, as there were palm trees everywhere, the roads were in much better condition and the signage was in the curly script of the local language - Malayalam. We finally arrived at The Old Harbour Hotel, a few minutes from the waterfront, in Fort Cochin. It was our most luxurious accommodation on the tour so far. We were delighted to find that our rooms had been upgraded, and Nigel and I had a cottage room that had an outdoor shower and French doors that opened on ... read more

The Secret Garden Heritage Hotel is aptly named as I find out on my twisting and turning tuktuk drive to find my final hotel of this amazing trip to southern India. I'd found the hotel by chance online and as soon as I saw the photos showing off their gorgeous antique Indian furniture, the elegant balconies, the wooden carvings, the four poster beds with beautiful Indian design coverings and the pool I just couldn't resist splashing out and treating myself to three extra days on my own at the end of my G-Adventures trip. I am welcomed with a freshly squeezed pineapple juice and then taken to my gorgeous room. The standard is quite a notch up from those I'd gotten used to on my adventure travel tour. So I'm blown away by the luxury and ... read more

Today we join the 2.5 million people using the Indian railway system every day as we are on the move traveling by train from Cochin to Calita. We arrive early due to the unpredictable nature of - well let's face it, pretty much everything in India, but in this instance specifically, the traffic. No major hold ups mean we have some time to kill. I find myself going on a trip down memory lane with another ex Hull Universityite comparing notes about the halls of residence and changes that have taken place in the town itself in the intervening years since our respective degrees were taken. After reminiscing about 10p a shot vodkas at Ferens and finding out about the closing of Clemenson amongst other stuff only of interest to ex Hull students, it's time to ... read more

When I was young, whenever I'd pull a silly face, fingers dragging my bottom eyelids down while at the same time shoving the tip of my nose up and my mouth wide (that was always the favourite) my mum used to warn me that if the wind changed direction my face would stay that way. Of course I didn't believe her and gurned away thinking I was hilarious, but still a tiny part of me wondered if maybe she was right making me stop pretty soon after. After all who wants to spend the rest of their life looking like a pig that's had a stroke? Tonight at the Cochin Cultural Centre Academy of Arts and Performing Theatre I am to get a lesson in extreme face pulling that no wind on earth could fix in ... read more

Legend tells that Kerala was created when some dude called Parsurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishna, threw his battle axe into the Arabian sea. Why he did this isn't clear and equally unclear is why this should turn the sea into fertile land, nevertheless this is the legend and the state of Kerala has officially been a state of India since 1956. The place I'm staying in for the first part of my tour around southern India is the Kerelan city of Cochin. This morning we are taken on a tour of Fort Cochin by our guide Sadjit. Fort Cochin is the colonial part of the city with influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Arabs and not forgetting the Empire building Brits! We start off in a square with massive trees we find out are rain ... read more

India! I'm back and a symphony of senses envelopes my soul. Noise, chaos, sounds, smells hit all at once. If like me you're used to more temporate climes nothing can prepare you for the tsunami wave of heat that hits you and seeps into every core of your being. It feels like there isn't enough air to breathe and instant beads of sweat form on my forehead and around the nape of my neck. Scorchio! My life is in the hands of the transfer guy I'd prearranged with G-Adventures as we weave in and out of constantly honking cars, trucks, buses, tuktuks and mopeds. Those from my native UK who tend towards road rage on what they think are our overcrowded roads would be in a constant state of eye popping, vein bursting, heart attack inducing ... read more

Last day Thursday afternoon we went for a two hour boat trip. A large amount of the coastal area forms a natural j Kochi and backwaters that run up the coast. Some party boats passed us blaring loud music so our skipper put his on, Michael Jackson and Village People, so Toni took her hearing aid out. After that there was a trip to a shopping mall, which I decided not to go on as I was shopped out, and had no room in my suitcase, or money in my purse. Stephen and I had a meal at the hotel, then I repacked my suitcase, hoping to get everything in. Apparently the mall was full of mostly western shops, but more expensive than in the UK, so I'm glad I missed it. Friday we are taken ... read more
