Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

I have yet to embark on this, my self proclaimed, life changing trip. It will be a first in that; I am travelling intimidatingly alone, I am travelling for a longer period than two weeks and that on my travels I aim to achieve more than just a tan top up. Bangalore holds many possiblities for me. My intended length of stay is eight weeks in which I will be volunteering through an organisation to work for an Indian music magazine called Rave. It's office is based in Bangalore and this is the sole reason for my spontaneous choice of destination, [View Full Entry]

Luckily my train arrived here a hour and a half late, so I only had fifteen hours to spend before hopin' on my flight. So far, I've had a conversation with a homeless teenager at the train station, who hit me up for a hundred rupees. The kid is doing not so bad for himself, conversational English, some body fat, and a bracelet. All he got was two pieces of candy and someone to chat with for an hour, but he seemed fairly pleased. The auto-rickshaw fella who took me into a touristy part of town was a cool guy who [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, I have moved to Bangalore and am loving it. Here are some pics of my apartment. I will try to get some more pics of Koramangala, the neighborhood I live in, soon. Bangalore is a big city and it is a definite change from Trivandrum. I have moved from one of the most conservative states to one of the most liberal and progressive. In Bangalore you don't need a female partner to jump on the dance floor. I'm really enjoying the great restaurants around my neighborhood and the fact they are all open until at least 1130pm, this not [View Full Entry]

Visa Trouble First challenge in my effort to get to India. I check the status of my Visa online (sent in 2 1/2 weeks previous) and see that my Visa is on hold with no reason stated. After several emails back and forth, I am told they did not receive a payment with the application. Funny, because I took my passport and application to the post office, bought a money order at the counter put everything in the registered envelope and handed it all back to the clerk. The package was signed for at the Travisa organization, but they claim [View Full Entry]

Hello, First, I would like to thank everyone who has emailed / messaged / called to check in on me. I'm fine, as far as terrorist activity goes. I'm in Bangalore which is in South India (about where home plate would be if you made a diamond between Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi, and Bombay. Nothing has happened in Bangalore since late summer and I'm sure they will be locking down; before we've had major increase in visible police force / road blocks on the streets when attacks happen. I am trying to respond individually to everyone but thought this would be a [View Full Entry]

The main idea of coming to bangalore was too see the one day between india and england. The train journey here was 15 hours of pure indian madness, we didnt book the express train which took only 8 hours we went local style stopping at which felt like every station in karnataka or anywhere else they felt like stopping. Arrived early in the morning and went straight to the stadium. Where we picked up some black market tickets for 1500 ruppees each. Found a room about 2mins walk from stadium and 10 minutes city centre for 600 rupees so 300 each [View Full Entry]

Late Night Thoughts Asia » India » Karnataka » Bangalore
If I have learned anything in India it is that nothing is ever what it seems the first time around. I know this is a cliché and over-used saying. Everyone knows that you can’t see something once and know all about it, but India has just ingrained this idea in my brain so that I will never look at anyone ever again and think that I know anything about them unless I actually speak to them more than once. I find myself very much the outsider these days. I will more often then not listen to a person speak and say [View Full Entry]

Learning Bharathanatyam Asia » India » Karnataka » Bangalore
It’s interesting, this dance where my feet meet the ground with a clap, the vibrations shaking the bones in my soles. I was born in a country where traditional was a flapper doing swing in the 50s. Bharatanatyam is over 300 years old, originally danced by men, though now there are more women dancers than men, it was a tribute to the gods and was intended for the eyes of the gods only. Today it is a fading relic. With India’s progression comes a loss of traditional value. Young people don’t want to learn traditional dance because it is not “cool”. [View Full Entry]

My first night in Bangalore was pretty much just spent sleeping in a hotel then returning to the airport in the morning to catch a flight to Nagpur. With the new airport in operation there's not really any hotels that near to it. You have to be a bit careful when booking a hotel in Bangalore as a lot of them still advertise that they are 7km away from the airport, which is the old airport. I booked into Shreyas Residency which is about the closest I could find to the airport, about 20km away, along the main highway. Not a [View Full Entry]
