Apologies for a mixed entry - this text works with both Bodhgaya photos! It was the night before Christmas Eve after all. Quite appropriate to be knocking on inn doors looking for a room. We didn’t have straw on the floor, the donkey stayed on the street and the adoring multitudes were gathering at Mahabodhi. A sea of maroon and saffron robes. All converging to participate in the 27th Kagyu Monlam festival of prayer. Accommodation being generally full we were paying top dollar for a mediocre room. Security was obviously a top priority with the air conditioner hole in the wall sealed with a piece of newspaper! We couldn't strike lucky with everything but we had enjoyed an early morning ride with the secretary of the Mahabodhi Temple Committee's wife who was travelling down to visit ... read more

From Varanasi Charly and I decided to take a mini-break to Bodhgaya, 5 hours away by train. Bodhgaya (also known as Buddha Disneyland) is a town built around the spot where the Buddha achieved enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree in, err 6 something BC I think. If the Buddha came back to visit today I'm not sure what he'd make of all the fuss and pomp at Bodhgaya. For a philosophy expounding simplicity and non-attachment, there seemed to be a disproportionate amount of gold leaf. Our train from Varanasi, which we had woken up at 4.30am to catch, was 3 hours late and by the time it came Charly had made solid friends with the monkeys, rats and beggars of Varanasi Junction while I sulked into a chai. By the time we arrived and ... read more

Having already done an Intro to Buddhism course, I decided to stay at the Root Institute and do my own little retreat. Lots of reading and meditation. Generally a wonderful place to be. The most spiritual place for Buddhists in the world. A real mix of Buddhists. And plenty of hassling Indians thrown in. Just kidding...maybe I want a rickshaw and can't walk anywhere? Have a bicycle and the Institute is silent so it's a wonderful escape. Will then return to IVCS on 28th Nov for 2 weeks or so. ... read more

I am in Bodh Gaya, the most holy site for any Buddhists. Bodh Gaya is the town where Siddhartha attained enlightenment. I went up to the cave where he meditated for 6 years. It was small, stuffy and hot! Respect to him for being able to concentrate under those conditions. There are 22 different Buddhist temples all over the town including ones from Japan, Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Korean, Taiwan, China and many other countries. It was truly a peaceful town where all different sects of Buddhism would have tremendous respect for each other. They were all brought together because they were drawn into the magnificent Mahabodhi Temple. This is the most beautiful Buddhist temple I have ever seen. It gave me the same feeling as when I saw the Taj Mahal. There many ... read more

Mitenhan huomenna mahdumme junaan? Tanne tullessa meilla kavi tosi hyva tuuri! Ensin yritimme ahtautua secon... read more

Ensin omistaja sanoi huoneen irtoavan tonnilla Intian rubioita eli noin 18 eurolla. Emme olleet kuitenkaan tyytyvaisia, silla olimme juuri saaneet edellisessa paikassa 700 tarjouksen ja melkein jo hyvaksyneet sen, kunnes seta tiskin takana tokaisi verojen tulevan viela siihen paalle, jolloin lahdimme kavelemaan. Nama verot naissa hotelleissa ovat k... read more

Since we're now a few posts into this blog, we're not going to bother with trying to think of an "introduction" for each one. We'll just get right to the good stuff! We left off waiting for a train in Agra. Which, by the way, was the absolute longest wait of our lives. We couldn't get out of that place fast enough! It smelled terrible, it was crawling with tour groups, and the people there only talked to you to get one thing: money. That night, at 11:30PM, we took our first overnight train. We'll try to give you a picture of what it's like in these cabins. Each one, in AC2 Tier, has 4 bunks, two on each side. The bunks are about 5'8" long, and I (Robert) say that because it's just barely long ... read more

Bodhgaya (February 15th-22nd) In Bodhgaya I made a last-minute decision to take a Buddhism and meditation course. It turned out to be a wonderful decision and it certainly saved my impression of Bodhgaya, which I was in danger of mildly disliking. Bodhgaya is located in Bihar, one of the poorest states in India. Bodhgaya is one of the most important sites for Buddhists. It is the place where Prince Siddharta Gautama sat beneath a bodhi tree and attained enlightenment, becoming the Buddha. The Mahabodhi Temple commemorates the event and was built in the 6th century AD on the site of the original temple constructed by Emperor Ashoka about 800 years before. The current Bodhi Tree is supposedly a descendant of the original. Monasteries and temples have been built around the town by Buddhist communities from around ... read more

**This is the first of 3 back posts (time flies when your having fun!) The state of Bihar is stated to be the least literate and most lawless part of India. Welcome to the land of enlightenment! Bodh Gaya is right in the middle of the state, my first stop after leaving Kolkata. I wanted to like Kolkata, I really did…. But I didn’t. After 1 hour in Bodh Gaya, I knew that I didn’t like Kolkata. The village, population of about 30,000 is small and quaint; though anything but quiet (I really do believe that Indians are afraid of silence). I checked into a nice, comfortable room and had breakfast on the roof-top restaurant (a very common location for a restaurant as nearly all roofs are flat). The story goes that Bodh Gaya is the ... read more
