Trying again.................in gym at 6.15 this morning - must be jet-lag. Took a trip on a junk from Central Pier to Kowloon to Stanley. Caught a bit of sun on the way. Stanley's a lovely spot. Went to the Tin Hau Temple. Fell asleep on the way back after trying to take Rae's pic without switching camera on - must be jet-lag (or old age). After a very pleasant dinner in the hotel (complete with party hats etc.),went down by tram to see the New Year in at Central Pier, complete with fireworks. Happy 2012 to one and all - should be a few pics attached!... read more

Today we had a traditional Chinese breakfast, it was much different than breakfast in Beijing. In Beijing we had vegetables, fried items, and bao's. Breakfast in Hong Kong had various types of noodles. So far, Hong Kong breakfast is my favorite. The Hong Kong Institute of Technology had two lectures today for the international summer school. The first lecture was about international crime. The lecturer described what international crime was, and the types that occur specifically mentioning the types of crime that occur in Hong Kong and Macau. The second lecture was fascinating. I enjoyed hearing the differences between government in the United States and Hong Kong. I did not know that the Head of State is not popularly elected in Hong Kong, however, since the handover of Hong Kong, the government has actually become more ... read more

Hong Kong July 5th Once again my day began with me waking up and showering. Today we endured two lectures, one on crime in China and the other I don’t know because I was falling in and out of consciousness the entire time. I remember the lecturer's name was Brian because he was kind of fresher looking than most lecturers (if you get what I mean ;-)) It was actually really funny because one of the Taiwanese students actually fell asleep snoring (Archie)! Same with their professor! NOBODY paid attention to that lecture. After discussion we went on a field trip to Stanley. Stanley is a huge tourist attraction spot where all the super rich people have vacation homes and stuff. Me and Dr. Sharon (Xiangrong) Liu were trying to negotiate prices for 'I love HK' ... read more

I have by no means travelled far, but I feel confident when I say there is nowhere quite like Hong Kong. Yes, as the saying goes, it is the ultimate ‘East meets West’ setting. But only in parts. There is so much more depth to this city than a cliché. It truly is a place of opposing faces. One barely stops for a breath, whilst the other seems completely oblivious to the presence of mankind. Granted, every place has its different areas, but not to the degree that I have experienced here. The moment I walked into my apartment, I had been taken aback by the beauty of Mount Parker (the view from the window). Our first Sunday, 1st May, was the perfect opportunity to escape the chaos of our first five days, find some marginally ... read more

Went out to Stanley Bay to meet Amy & Adam for brunch. Took the 260 bus out and met them on the Promenade. Had a Western style brekkie, then looked around Murray House (old British Officers mess) and watched the dragon boat racing from the 2nd storey deck. They are crazily fast, i was exhausted watching them powering through the water. I dragged Scott through the Markets, where we picked up a beautiful oil painting for HKD$1500. I managed to buy a handbag while Scott wasn't watching hehe. Headed back to Central to scotts work on the 6X so he could pick up orders - called the mother's for mothers day. Stopped into the Metropolitan in the United centre for some Dim sum before catching the 260 home. The buses here are just amazing, every 10 ... read more

Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I have posted.....absence makes the heart grow fonder? :) Well, it has been quite a crazy couple of weeks here. We have had a successful G2 program, filled with world music: dancing, drumming, and xylophones, and we have an R2 program to finish tomorrow morning. After that, we will be coasting until the end! I can't believe there are only 6 weeks left of my stay in Hong Kong. It will be a bittersweet ending for me. This has been one of the best and most challenging years of my life. I have done more, pushed myself more, and learned more this year than I ever have. I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity. I have met some of the most amazing people, who ... read more

We started our morning off with a cappucino and hash browns at Rotten Ronnie's. A slow 20 minute walk took us to the Star Ferry which operates a service across the harbour to Hongkong Island (the terrirory of Hongkong is comprised of an island and part of the China mainland). The ferry ride takes takes less than 10 minutes and costs around $2. The weather today was perfect for a bus tour - not too hot and somewhat cloudy. For Can $32 we took a guided tour around the island. The contrasts of HK are amazing: clean and cosmopolitan in one area and then around the corner a typical crowded market street. There is no where inside the apartments to dry laundry and so the industrious Chinese hang their laundry to dry outside the windows of ... read more

After a good sleep, a wonderful shower, and an extensive hotel breakfast (about NZ$15) we were ready to meet Rae. It was great to catch up with her and pass on greetings from her ex-colleagues back in NZ. Jill’s parcel made it safely and our bags are a tiny bit lighter. With Rae, we headed to Hong Kong Island by MTR and got off at Admiralty. From here we caught a double-decker bus to Stanley on the other side of the island. The road is hilly, winding, but the views are spectacular. Incredible apartment buildings dot the hillsides for the best views. Today was a public holiday so everyone in Hong Kong decided to visit Stanley. We jostled around the market and found a wonderful little jewellery shop. For security Marilyn left her rings in NZ ... read more

A sad thing happened about 2 weeks ago. My dragon laptop died. It is no longer. Luckily I have been able to get everything off of it. So no real tragedy.....except for I have lost my cool laptop with dragons on it. We had a nice life together... So I have been waiting and waiting to put up these pictures from the Philippines! I hope you enjoy! Life here in Hong Kong has been different the last couple weeks. I am finding myself a little bored in my life here- which is strange because I am really busy with school and choirs and socializing. I am just not finding things as exciting. Maybe I need a trip or a new project (as if planning a wedding isn't enough!) I do get excited when I plan the ... read more
