Laura Lorentzen

My name is Laura Lorentzen. I am 23 years old and recently moved from the U.S. to Hong Kong, China. I will be starting my first year of teaching music in a new country. I have signed up for a year of teaching pre-K through 2nd grade, hope I survive! I thought the hard part was moving to a new country....but we shall see. :) I have a wonderful family and friends who have been VERY supportive of this move. I also have an amazing fiancee, who has been extra wonderful about this unique opportunity. I am looking forward to the coming year, with all its new experiences and challenges.

Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I have posted.....absence makes the heart grow fonder? :) Well, it has been quite a crazy couple of weeks here. We have had a successful G2 program, filled with world music: dancing, drumming, and xylophones, and we have an R2 program to finish tomorrow morning. After that, we will be coasting until the end! I can't believe there are only 6 weeks left of my stay in Hong Kong. It will be a bittersweet ending for me. This has been one of the best and most challenging years of my life. I have done more, pushed myself more, and learned more this year than I ever have. I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity. I have met some of the most amazing people, who ... read more

A sad thing happened about 2 weeks ago. My dragon laptop died. It is no longer. Luckily I have been able to get everything off of it. So no real tragedy.....except for I have lost my cool laptop with dragons on it. We had a nice life together... So I have been waiting and waiting to put up these pictures from the Philippines! I hope you enjoy! Life here in Hong Kong has been different the last couple weeks. I am finding myself a little bored in my life here- which is strange because I am really busy with school and choirs and socializing. I am just not finding things as exciting. Maybe I need a trip or a new project (as if planning a wedding isn't enough!) I do get excited when I plan the ... read more

I have had a very difficult last couple of weeks. It started with Adam leaving. It was really hard for me to have him here and then gone..and it seems like SO long until we see each other again. I know it will go fast but it was kind of like I had to start over again. I am/was also dealing with the fact that my best friend here was leaving on march 1. The weather has also been quite dreary. At times...the same temperature as valpo! Something changed this past weekend though. First of all...Jackie, my best friend here, is staying until June! That is probably the main thing that changed. But also...I have started to find my alone time and independence refreshing again. I went to the st Matthew passion a couple nights ... read more

I know it has been awhile since I have written anything here. I have been very busy! We just celebrated our Chinese New Year here and Adam came to visit me. He was here for 12 days or so. We had a wonderful time together. It was just so nice to have him here so he could see what my life has looked like for the last 7 months or so. We did some touristy things and had some nice dinners- the weather was great so we got to go on a hike together, one that we were not really prepared for. It also turned out that I was in better shape than he was.....maybe just for these 2 weeks of our lives, but still! I crushed him. ;) I attached most of the pictures from ... read more

I am surprised to say that the title of the post is somewhat true! Besides the weather that I am USED to experiencing at this time of year (we have dropped to somewhere in the 50s-60s here, watch out...cold front!) Christmas has really exploded all around me. All of the malls have quite elaborate Christmas displays, and our school puts out a tree and decorates with lights. There are carolers and shoppers and all around good cheer. There has also been a lot going on to help get me in the holiday spirit. We have had two Holiday Shares, one with Grade 1 and one with Grade 2. Both of these went very well and there is a DVD to come! Let me know if you are interested in watching. ;) We also had our Community ... read more

Whew! Where does the time go? It is Thanksgiving here in Hong Kong- a holiday that no one else really celebrates :). We celebrate at my school (although not with a day off...). There are feasts and assemblies and caring and sharing, etc. It has really been a lovely day so far- if not just a little bit nuts! I have several Thanksgiving dinners planned for this weekend- 3 to be exact. Thursday, Friday AND Saturday. I will most likely be in a food coma by the end of the weekend. And my friend Jackie just asked me to run a 10K with her on Sunday.....do you think I will be able to move?? On this day of thanks...I am finding myself thankful for many things in my life. The first thing I am thankful for ... read more

Two entries in a week....lucky you! ;) Halloween is a holiday that I never really thought I would miss...but this past Sunday I found myself feeling very homesick. I wanted to be there to see kids trick or treating. I wanted to dress up in a silly costume. I wanted to watch a scary movie with Adam. Getting into this holiday season just makes me more and more glad that I decided to come home for Christmas. If I felt this way about Halloween, I can't even imagine how I would have felt being here at Christmas...Adam or no Adam :). In an effort to entertain myself on Halloween, I went with a couple of friends to Hong Kong's amusement park- Ocean Park. It was definitely a fun day- we rode roller coasters, ate park food, ... read more

Whew! I can't believe it has been almost a month since I have written. I think that is a good thing- it means I have been busy and involved in my life here. It also means I have lots to share! We had our school fall break this past week (we get a whole week off!), so I went to visit Dana, one of my roommates from college, in Tokyo. I have heard lots of different things about Tokyo- it is busy, it is expensive, there is no english, the food is great- so I was very excited to see it for myself. My arrival in Tokyo started off a little rocky. My flight got in at 10pm- Dana was a little bit late to get me because she had been traveling around all day with ... read more
