Only a short report today. Have visited 3 pagodas and 7 temples. To tell the truth I was not too bothered about this visit, but I went and was glad I had, it was very interesting and needless to say, a great photo opportunity. Sadly, Frank, one of the group, put his camera down. He forgot about it for a short time, you can guess the rest, when he realised he had forgotten it and went to find it, it had gone! Someone had taken it along with the 600 photos he had taken. Devastating! Climbed Cang Sham Mountain, 4122m. had a good walk on the paths. ... read more

Now in Dali. Had to take a shorter route today because the road is under construction. Travelled 6 miles on unmade roads then cycled around the the beautiful lake. Entered the old town through the East gate which had a pagoda on top. Had lunch at the 'Green Lodge Back-packers Hostel', had to wait quite a while as only two staff. Weather very nice again today, 30 deg+. Looking forward to tomorrow, as we are going up a mountain in a cable car to 4000m. Nothing else to report, there have been no problems and no breakdowns, touch wood! ... read more

Had another very good day with temperatures at 30 deg +, and I am still slapping on the sun screen. Have been on the roof top terrace of the Hiadong East Sea Resort hotel and spent time watching a spider that was at least 2 and a half inches in diameter, in fact China seems populated by huge spiders! The town is 2100m above sea level. Rode about 43 miles today, it was difficult, with a 10 kilometer climb, I was almost (but not quite) in bottom gear! The ride down was great and there at the bottom was the most monstrous cement works I have ever seen, it had 3 kilns. I imagine some of the cement from there finds its way to Britain, as we have started importing Chinese cement. Had coffee in a ... read more

Dali was a nice little town, and a good way to break up the trip between Lijiang and Kunming. It is a little like Lijiang, in that some streets are closed off to cars, and are lined with touristy shops. But unlike lijiang it is layed out in the familiar square shape of many chinese cities, with a surrounding city wall, and straight streets that are easy to navigate. The first day in dali, we took a chairlift up the mountains that loom up on the west side of town. It is then a 12 km walk to another chairlift back down. The walk takes a while, but it is flat - much different from tiger leaping gorge. But the scenery is very nice - steep mountains, good view of dali and the lake, with some ... read more

Any man named David is lucky and is generally a premium person. The David who killed Goliath, The Naked David in Florence (it’s easy to get girls when you have the best body ever), my two wonderful friends, one from America and one from Scotland and now I can add David, the Australian who owns the best hostel in the world. Alex mentioned that Hugo and I needed to stay at the Jade Emu hostel as it was acquiring some 95% approval ratings; we needed to check this out. Having arrived at the location, I marveled at the courtyard. A homely square with exquisite an pool table, full proxy across the wireless allowing such marvel sights as facebook and youtube to be reached and not only toilet paper in the bathrooms, but soap…oh the glory of ... read more

So my second part of Dali story will be more about the Bai people and their lifestyle. They call themselves BAI, which has a first meaning of white, but what they mean by it is actually PURE. Also their traditional clothing is basically white, with colorful highlights. Women wear special kind of head thing, which is wowen with symbols, representing feng , hua, xue and yue. All four of them are connected with romance and falling inlove. But the Bai have their own story for each of these symbols. FENG-the wind (Xiaguan wind) myth: in Chinese mythology it is also possible for animals to acquire a human form (like Kung-fu Panda, hehe). So there was a snake, who has become a beautiful young lady. She fell inlove with a goodlooking young man, who was to avoid ... read more

Ja. Seveda so na Beijing time). Malo dezja malo cisto jasnega na nebu. Ob osmih in se malo: ogromna mavrica na nebu nad Dalijem in njegovimi gorami. Najprej po par ... read more

The arrival at Dali was great. The Jade Emu guesthouse has a beautiful courtyard and very nice staff. The dorm is more a hotel room than a real dorm. There are three beds in the room, which all fit about 4 Chinese. The bathroom is also quite large and made out of marble. The first night, I also lucky to even have the whole room for myself! The only tiny negative thing of the guesthouse is that the atmosphere is not really open. I wasn’t the only one having that feeling. We thought the reason for it is that most of the people who come here are with at least one other person. And, what is also quite annoying is that it seems that they only have one CD. I mean, I love Manu Chao, but ... read more

Today one Irishwoman, 2 Finns, and I headed out to the hike above town. We took cable cars up the mountain, hiked 12 km with some diversions, and then took the ski lift back down to town. It was nice and shaded and cool, and unlike Tiger Leaping Gorge, it was paved (for the most part) making things easier. Made for more of a leisurely stoll than a hike. Which would explain our desire to leave the path and climb. We deviated from the path immediatly upon reaching the top of the mount. We trekked over to the first of many waterfalls. This one just happened to be one of the bigger ones we would see. The steps to it were steep and crazy but the view was amazing! After watching a woman in flip-flop high ... read more
