Our room had a wooden door covered with a cloth door with a neat design. We could look down into a courtyard.

This palace was built in 637 AD and was the residence of the Dalai Lama until 1959. At that time, he escaped to India where he lives today. It is currently against the law for a Tibet citizen to own a picture of the Dalai Lama.

Every morning, hundreds of pilgrims walk to the temples and to the Potala Palace with their prayer wheels. They spin them clockwise and it is the same as saying a prayer. Some also hold prayer beads with 108 beads on a string.
