EBC Trip - Wednesday 7th November We had decided that we wanted to do a trip to Everest Base Camp (normally a five day round trip from Lhasa) as we may never have the opportunity again, so we spent a few days running around checking notice boards outside the popular budget hotels and checking internet forums - the travel agents arranging the trips don't make it easy as they insist that the customer gets a group together, rather than keeping a list of people's names who want to go and putting them together; there's a maximum of four people per Landcruiser, so we had been trying to find two other people who wanted to leave around the same date (it was prohibitively expensive to do without finding others to share the cost), for the same amount ... read more

After a post-trek evening of rest in Shigatse we opted for one more day-trip in the area, before returning to Lhasa. The small town of Gyantse had come highly recommended by fellow travellers, so we were keen to explore. After some breaky we wandered down to the Shigatse bus depot to locate some transport. A taxi offered to take us for around 50 quai, this seemed like as good an option as any. We were sharing the cab with two elderly local women, who spent most of the journey offering us food, including 'yak jerkie'. About an hour down the road (roughly half way there), our cabby stopped the taxi to speak to a mate who'd been driving in the opposite direction; he then proceeded to move Fred to the back of the taxi and place ... read more

After an awful nights sleep it was touch and go if we were going to be making our journey today, as Ed did not want to be too far from the bathroom. However after some salt and sugar solution and various things (we'll spare you the details), we give it a slow go. Firstly we visit the monastery of Pelkor Chode (built 1418) and the Kumbum Stupa. In the Pelkhor Chode we were treated to a very special sight of monks chanting in traditional dress, as well as many pilgrims bustling around us. The Kumbum Stupa was built in 1440 and houses 1,000 buddhas and 15th Century murals. The view from the top is very impressive down on the valley of Gyantse. Driving the 90km to Shigatse, we take refuge in the hotel after a ... read more

The second half of our journey through Tibet was as amazing as the first. We drove to Shigatse, Tibet's second largest city. A new highway had recently been completed linking the two cities. Though deemed modern by Tibetan standards it reminded me of a seldom used county road in Central Oregon, winding and twisting through canyons along the river, large cracks and potholes gouged into its surface from falling rocks. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. We first stopped along the Lhasa River to see where the water burials took place. Water burials are generally reserved for the children and the very poor. As opposed to a sky burial, where the dried-out body of the deceased is cut up and fed to the vultures, the water burial is relatively simple. The body is simply thrown (whole or ... read more

Wow! What a great day!!!! Our road trip started today and it was great fun! We also got to finally meet our guide for the rest of the trip. His name is Pubu and that literally mean Thursday in Tibetan! He has quite unique pair of eyes for an Asian. Instead of the usual dark brown iris, his has a light brown hue. You can say that it look quite like a tigers'. If not for his cheeky character and boyish face, I think he will look pretty fierce. From Lhasa, we travelled along Friendship Highway towards Gyantse where we stayed for the night. We left Lhasa around 9am and arrived in Gyantse around 7pm. Me and Suki get to share a jeep with Pubu, while Meng and Fungi shared the jeep with Tim. Though it ... read more
