The picture quality is not great as the army is undercover and my camera is not as wizzy as it should be
Hello from the wonderful city of Shanghai which I have to say has blown us all away!It is truly awesome with hundreads of skyscrapers each completely different. It is the mecca of china with 22 million people registered as living in the city boundaries and a further 10 more in the suburbs. Last night i did something i never dreamed I would do I went up the 2nd tallest buliding in the world 485 metres 101 floors .You will be pleased to know that I wore my one and only paur of heels which sadly I had to take off i was so scared of walking so high up!!!!. We have had a wonderful day today the sun was out and we had a whistle tour of the city finishing with the Shanghai state circus very like circ du cela ( wrong spelling i know!) It was fab, truly amazing , I am feeling exhausted having only just watched the show !

before shanghai we spent 3 days on the Yangtzi which while we thoughly enjoyed the weather was so poor with low visability that we found it difficult to apreciate the spectacular scenery . What was interesting was going through the locks near the 3 gorges dam ,it took 4 and half hours to go through we had to come down 185 meters. The project itself is nearly complet the state has relocated 1.3 million people and most of their homes are now submerged. By december the final phase will be over and the water will be at its final level which should prevent flooding downstream and will provide electricty for 5% of china.

finally ( well this was before our yangtze jaunt) we visited Xian the home of the Terracotta army - this again turned out to be pretty amazing hundreds of soldiers and horses all different lined up to protect the emperor around 221BC. nIts all rather mind blowing and difficult to take in all at once

WOW!
That building you went up in Shanghai looks fantastic!! How old is it? I am very proud of you, Caro. Some height and so much glass! Definitely far more sky-scrapers than when I was there. I remember the Yangtze as being more surrounded by Limestone Rocks - stunning scenery. I suppose it is the works that have changed this. Sounds like you are having a fine old time - you're looking great in your photos! I also remember - now seeing the pics of old Shanghai - going to the oldest tea-house there. Can see I am going to have to get my slides out. Did you know before you left you were meeting up with Clive and Anna?? Gosh I am SO jealous!! House is a mess here with Les getting all his stuff ready for Cambodia. He has been packing for 2 weeks already!!! xxx
