It is 2am and I can't sleep. After several hours of tossing and turning, then reading and writing, I decide sleeping is not going to come easy tonight. I need a walk. I get dressed and head downstairs. In the lobby the security guard in his chair and desk workers all put their heads up as I walk out of the stairwell. All trying to catch a few moments of sleep while they can. I walk outside through the revolving doors and head in the direction I am facing. Our hotel sits at an odd angle not quite facing the road on our already slanted street. It has been raining off and on the past few days leaving everything damp but cooler so it is a fair tradeoff. I keep walking, ignoring the "don't walk" light ... read more

Snip-its written over several days of being sick in Shanghai... Well it has to be said that today was not my favorite day in Shanghai. I started getting sick about 3pm yesterday with cold chills. Last night was filled with a lot of going back and forth between being to cold and hot. This morning I got up and tried to get ready for work. While I was walking to the Metro I decided that going to work was not a good idea today. So I called my boss and went back to sleep. Around 3:30pm today I knew that I was pretty sick and needed to see someone so I called my insurance company in China(thanks Disney!) and they found me an English speaking doctor. The insurance lady(hereafter know as IL) told me to bring ... read more

As of right now the date is Saturday, June 25th, 2011 and it has been a busy week already. Usually I would have written in my blog already by now but things have been happening one right after the other so I haven’t had time to write. So let me start from the beginning. On Wednesday morning I got up at 5:10am EST and quickly got dressed, showered and said goodbye to my sisters. My dad drove me to the airport where during the car ride I received a call from United Airlines stating that my flight was cancelled! I panicked a little but it turned out fine as they put me on another flight where after I connected in Chicago and left for Shanghai. My flight to Shanghai was very good. It was 14 hours ... read more

Disclaimer 1: I cannot promise that within these posts you will find proper grammer, spelling, or puncuation. If you cannot handle it, I will tell you all about my trip when I get home! :) Day 1 June 22nd/ June 23rd, 2011. Things started out a little rocky when I started my journey. Mom and I went to the airport and 4am only to be told my flight had been canceled due to bad weather in Chicago (which I was o so happy about). After explaining to United why I could not wait until Friday to fly out, I was told to come back later and catch a flight on Delta to Detroit and then to Shanghai. So Mom and I headed home (well first to Denny's) to get a few more hours of sleep. Around ... read more

After having lunch with a beautiful woman a young man entered a taxi in the center of downtown Shanghai. The taxi driver asked where to and the man told him so. The taxi driver, in a gentle and sincere voice, complimented the man's Chinese. The man did not respond to the compliment, seeking to be effected by neither praise nor contempt. He gets out his cell phone and makes a few needed calls. They drive through the city and arrive at the man's destination: an apartment complex where he has an audition. As he gets out the taxi to remove his excess baggage (an umbrella, jacket, laptop and backpack) he looks at the kindly taxi driver and tells him, "Your demeanor is very polite." The taxi driver accepts the compliment and the two part. The man ... read more

Happy New Year! After many weeks of anticipation, New Year's Eve was a loud and colorful affair. Mark and the kids spent New Year's Eve day walking around our 'hood. They went to the park and also to have lunch at the mall. Nothing says Chinese New Year like Subway sandwiches and Dairy Queen. Not Mark's choice, I'm sure. I am fighting a cold (and so far, winning the battle), so I didn't leave the apartment until the evening when I went out front with the family to watch the fireworks show in our apartment complex. Mark and the kids bought a few sparklers and one bigger fireworks bundle called Happy Boom. Mark prepped for the launch with great caution. He unwrapped the top of the package in our kitchen. We all watched anxiously and then ... read more
