Time to take stock It's definitely Springtime; although the high altitude and low humidity mean it still gets really cold here at night, during the day my eider-down coat is way too heavy. Time to invest in a cool sweatshirt or a nice leather jacket. I got outside for a bit to go to the market and window-shop. I had spotted a shop selling "tea things" next to my building; the very same day I was treated to cha dao, (a form of tea ceremony) by one of my managers. It's a very enjoyable experience because it takes time to prepare the tea, and more than one kind is used, one after the other, to contrast and bring out the flavors. I want to learn how to do it, but buying my first set of "tea ... read more

I really hope this link works... http://www.flickr.com/x/t/0098009/gp/49003535@N05/8n8r0E Created a Flickr account so I could display footage I took after climbing a "mountain" on Sunday. I find the video kind of humorous because my manager did NOT want to be on camera, so she took over. The first part of the video shows a donkey cart moving on the road in the distance; you can't really see it clearly but that was actually why I started filming. To my Chinese-speaking viewers: I apologize in advance for my horrible pronunciation. Rough trascript: "Manager Zhang!" "I'm too ugly!" "No, you're not! Tell my family hi!" Laughter, camera switches hands. "It's recording." "You didn't record me did you? Ok, hi Samantha! How was today?" "I'm feeling good. I'm at Shi Ren Wan, Stone Man Gulf" *attempts to end filming by ... read more

石人湾 or Shi Ren Wan- Stone Man Gulch Wa sei! That was what I and my manager kept saying whenever we saw the next rise we had to climb on our mountain today. It's kind of like saying, "Whoa..." I got up in time for an 8:30 breakfast with Amy (my manager), and discovered upon reaching the cafeteria that the time for meeting our guides had been moved up, and we were now running late. I wolfed down a boiled egg and grabbed a cup of yogurt. We jumped into Amy's car and were off. Amy drove like a bat out of heck. Traffic in Huhehaote is normally kind of chaotic, and the right-of-way seems to be "whoever gets there first;" but I was actually feeling a little nervous about the way she was driving and ... read more

Day 486: Wednesday 28th October - I thought travelling was stress free? Unusually I am writing this as it is fresh in the memory, the same evening sipping a beer and enjoying the sense of achievement. Let me explain. Winding the clock back half a day ago and I am woken by the guard on the train from Beijing half an hour before we arrive in Hohhot (pronounced Huhehaote), the capital of Inner Mongolia. I look out to the more barren landscape that confronts me now, a landscape closer to winter than that of Beijing and surrounds and psyche myself up for the day ahead. Tibet was meant to be sorted before I came to Hohhot but that plan, well didn’t go to plan as simple as that! At least the start of the day is ... read more

I never made it to the sand dunes or grasslands of Inner Mongolia, but the capital city of Hohhot was extremely interesting. We set off on a Friday night for a location further north, but by the time we had bought our tickets, all of the beds had been sold out, and only seats were left. We spent the whole night and the rest of the next day sitting in seats that couldn't recline on a crowded train as it wound through the country side of China (although there were some pretty areas, that last part might sound much more majestic than it actually was). You see, not only can you buy tickets for beds and seats on trains in China, but you can also buy "standing" tickets which means that you pay to stand in ... read more

I finally saw Transformers 2 last night, it was incredible! The movie was only in Chinese and did not have subtitles... but still, so awesome! I just wish I knew what they were saying. Oh well, I guess that means I have to see it again when I get home. -Kaye... read more

Monday morning the teachers at New Times, the managers, and the foreigner jumped into a bus and drove an hour south to the Er Long Shi Tai national park. The park is surrounded by farmland and is beautiful. The drive seemed short, we were telling jokes and looking at the beautiful scenery. As per my CIA/parents conditioning when I was a baby I wanted to sleep the minute I got into the bus, but Caroline wouldn't let me. So instead I studied Chinese and told some clean jokes. And Sym, if you're reading this, the giraffe in the refrigerator joke from middle school was a huge hit! We arrived a little after 10 o'clock and carried our picnic supplies 300m up the mountain to where we were going to eat lunch. We stopped in a shady ... read more

I've been meaning to write this post for a while, but have been procrastinating for various reasons. One of the most interesting things that I have encountered while in China is crossing the street. If you are reading this in the States, while sitting on the couch, you may laugh thinking that it is more complected than waiting for the signal to turn. Instead, in China, it's more like the 100m dash. What follows are a few guidelines that have been compiled by the people I've encountered while in China. 1) Wait for a native to begin crossing the street, and cross with them. Not only safe, but a good way to make friends and practice your Chinese! 2) All signals, traffic or otherwise, are merely suggestions of what should be happening. I've watched cars run ... read more

As you may have read, I have been experiencing some stomach issues. On Monday I had the day to myself. No students, no school, no class. This was probably a good thing because I was feeling horrible (to say the least, and to keep the blog PG). Around 8 pm I was finally hungry enough that I rolled out of bed (after waking up at 9am and spending the day on the computer) to attempt to make it to the KFC around the corner. Side note: I fully understand how detrimental KFC was going to be on my system, but the alternative was that I would have to cook and then clean up. I'm an instant gratification kind of girl when I'm sick. On the way down the five flights of stairs I only threatened twice ... read more
