8 Days with Shu Fey- Boarding the Victoria Katarina on the Yangtze River After getting the lay of the riverboat, we unpacked. Fortunately we were able to leave all but one bag at the Peninsula Hotel in Beijing so for the 8 day river cruise we just have our over the shoulder bag and one rolling carry-on. Easy. We are told that since we are “special” ;-) with Princess we will be taking all of our meals on the 6th deck in the VIP dining room. Works for us. There is a dining room on the 4th deck for everyone else. We have about 50% Americans, Australians and British and the other 50% are Chinese. Our Cruise Director is from New York City and our Captain is Chinese. Meals are all buffet style. Each evening there ... read more

We awoke following our fifth night on the Viking Emerald for what might be the normal gloom of disembarkation day; but, in our case our vacation is not over with nearly half of the major highlights still ahead of us. We settled our shipboard account and paid tips by credit card. Unfortunately, after paying the tour account, my bank declined the lesser bill for tips, no doubt wary of two back to back transactions in China. Fortunately, we each had two different credit cards with us, and Sharon’s card covered the tips. We also picked up the DVD for our cruise; which, Sharon is delighted since it captures me doing the hokey pokey in my red “Expedition Everest” hat. Arnold’s group is the last to leave the ship today, and our bags didn’t need to be ... read more

Up at 6 am. A long day ahead. Another less than spectacular buffet breakfast, them hotel checkout. On the road by 7:30 We are driving east from Chengdu to Chongqing to begin our cruise on the Yangtze, stopping along the way at the Dazu rock carvings. Our journey starts on major highways and then shifts to smaller two-lane and surprisingly narrow highways with no shoulder. Our driver, whom we nickname Horatio Hornblower for his almost constant use of his horn, is somewhat of a lunatic. We should already know that it is better not to watch the roads as we're driving, but we gasp as Horatio whizzes by bikes and old ladies with inches to spare. Just hang on and look at the floor. We have two rest stops along the way, each with a small ... read more

There are more (& mostly different), photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/China-3%20Gorges-2012/ …..with Bruce & Kerry visiting from Melbourne I need to be a little more organised in my travel plans than I might ordinarily be. I have accommodation names & dates printed out, (English & Chinese of course), plus carefully planned train connections. I shouldn't be so difficult in summer to book tickets. Should it? Maybe their phones don't work here so I hope they arrived in Chengdu & manage to use the translation I typed for them to buy tickets to meet me in Chongqing. Now, off to Yangzhou station to start my trip to that huge, burgeoning city in central China, a special economic area which has its own administrative zone with a total population, including surrounding towns & rural areas, of over 32 million..... …..leave ... read more

Into Chongqing and onto the Jiang Chang It is starting to feel like I am on one overnight train after another while travelling south from Beijing; however, it is so that I make my way onto the Yangtze, China’s longest river, notwithstanding having to bus first to Wanzhou for more hours, as well as money, than I would care to admit, or waste! All in all, the cruise is only 'interesting at best', but if you take into account the weariness element, the money and the actual “awe-inspiring” scenes you encounter, it is a very average experience. It might indeed have been the Gorges to see before the dam was built what with the high peaked cliffs above and a narrow gorge below, but not any more. Like LP notes, some might be amazed but for ... read more

parker It was our second day in Chongqing today. Today we went to visit Fuling, where Payton spent her first 13 months. It was a long car ride. When we got there we asked if we could see the gate keeper because Payton really liked him when she was a baby. He remembered her, and seemed very glad to see her. After that the director took us to the old orphanage. Now it is a kindergarden school. We then took the director back to the new orphanage and when we were leaving we saw the gatekeeper again. We asked him some questions about Payton but I will let Payton tell that part of the story. He said he went for a walk in hopes that he would see Payton again. We then headed back to Chongqing and ... read more

Hey everyone it's me(again)!! I read all of the comments, I really liked the =) Can't wait to see everyone when I get back and all of my pets :) Today was our first day in Chongqing. We left the Victoria Katarina and we went to learn a litttle bit of the history of Chongqing. The Quin(Chin) dinesty was around in the 17 centery(I think). Quin was the king. He didn't rule all of China, but a small part of China. An empror ruled all of China. There is a difference. We saw some figures on how the people lived. The rich people made medicine and gave free education to the kids. They also helped them with life, they gave them money too. Also during world war 2 people had burried porcelain and other precious belongings ... read more

Parker Today we got up and went for breakfast. We are in Chongqing today. It was time for us to leave the cruise. When we walked off the boat there was a band playing. Our guide Jerry then took us to an old home where people used to live. We took lots of pictures. After that we went to the Chongqing zoo. There were lots of animals there and the ones I liked the most were the sharks, the alligator, the black panther and the panda. The mother panda accidentally pushed her baby off the platform. We saw two pandas eating bamboo. There were lots of other animals. We then went for a hotpot lunch. Me and Payton had lots of tofu. After lunch we bought icecream. We then went to People's Square. There were lots ... read more

We spent the last four days on a ‘luxurious’, ‘all expenses paid’, ‘peaceful cruise’ down the Yangzi river with some ‘extremely courteous’ fellow passengers. Ok so yes the boat and chaotic manner in which all activities were undertaken on board did feel like being in our very own ‘Holidays from Hell’ TV episode but all in all we had a great time! The first day consisted of us getting a bus from our hostel in Chengdu at an extremely early hour, spending a good period of time not really knowing what was going on as we hauled our heavy bags through a grid locked and manic port area in Chongqing and then finally at about 8 O’clock finding our quarters aboard. Once we had paid for access all area VIP passes for the boat we spent ... read more

The wedding was more wonderful than we expected for so many reasons. The bride was more than beautiful, in both of her dresses. Jacob, handsome and confident in his dragon coat, made the perfect groom. The young attendants were a great support team for the couple, and we really enjoyed getting to know them. We also met many members of Lynn's extended family from Chengdu and from a small town in northern Sichuan province. And Kathy and I were so proud to be in our Chinese outfits up front in seats of honor with the bride's parents. Jacob pulled off his song to open the ceremony without a hitch, singing into the mike held by the wedding MC as he walked down the aisle, strumming a guitar, to retrieve Lynn from her father. Our performance of ... read more
