Very tired tonight! Batteries at a serious low ebb so gonna blog as fast as I can and then bugger off to bed. On our last night in Xian we went out for a night at a spot that does an all you can eat hotpot buffet dinner. For hotpot don't read that thing that Betty Turpin makes on Coronation street, this is sort of a steaming hot barrel of water on your table which you then add you choice of ingredients to, which included on the buffet bar a container of LIVE EALS! Yup, just pick them up, drop them in the boiling water and they're ready to eat in no time. I decided that was one experience I could live without, but Colin and Chris opted for it and reported they were ok, but ... read more

Relaxing after the Wall After a fairly tiring day hiking the Wall, we decided Friday was going to be a bit more laid back. We lazed around in the morning and Laura discovered the hotel's 25yuan (~$3) breakfast buffet where she made several trips for fruit, juice, etc. We've been a bit lacking in the fruits & veg department since arrival. We decided our next stop after Beijing is Pingyao and dealt with getting train tickets for a Saturday night sleeper train. Then we headed off to the area north of the Forbidden City. Very pretty and a bit more tourisity with several preserved palaces, temples, etc. We just wandered and finally ended up at trendy travellers bar where we played cards and drank beer. When a guide book photographer came in to photograph the place ... read more

Getting to the Wall The morning of our trip to the Great Wall was gorgeous - which helped with the fact that we had to be up so early and in the van by 6am. We had decided to visit a section of the wall called Jinshanling that was 3 hours away from Beijing and would hike 10km from there to the Simatai section of the wall. We were joined in the van by four other Westerners - two Dutch, two Spanish, we think - all intent on sleeping in the van. We were excited about seeing a greater slice of Beijing and the surrounding area through the van windows. What we initially expected to be more of a leisurely van ride seeing some of the greater Beijing area quickly became more of a thrill ride. ... read more

What a Wall The Great Wall of China is a destination not to be missed. Went to the magnificant wall twice. One was the Ba Da Ling Wall. This is a well renovated tourist attraction. Most Tour groups and tourists will make their way there to view the Great Wall. This part of the wall is the nearest to Beijing, but due to the crowd, it's a little too commercial to really feel the granduer of this wall.... To really experience the wildness of the wall, you can make your way to the magnificant Huang Hua Wall. This part of the wall is slowly being repaired but as there is no commercial activities around it, it has retain it's old world charm of wildness and wide space. Standing on the wall, you felt like you were ... read more

Arrival We arrived in Beijing on Monday May 8th (after leaving San Francisco on Sunday at noon!). The trip there was uneventful. ANA (All Nippon Airline) is a great airline. We were on new planes with great movie selection and they were very accommodating in providing beverages! When we got to Beijing, we took a cab into the city. That was an experience as the driver spoke no English and was not very sure where our hostel was in the city (even though we had a map in Chinese). Fortunately, we had the number to the hostel and he called them to get better directions. We got to the hostel, which is in a traditional "hutong" neighborhood and quickly went to sleep. First day in Beijing Our first day in Beijing greeted us with dreary weather ... read more

Sometimes just a random comment can challenge an entire way of thinking. No, I’m not talking about Steve Colbert’s scathing address to the White House Correspondent’s Dinner the other day, I’m talking about a guy I met the other day. He’d asked if I’d gotten out and seen much of China in my six months here. “Not much besides Shanghai,” I told him. “I’m waiting until my language skills improve.” I knew the lie of it before I even said the words. The truth of my homebody status is that despite all the travel I do, leaving home frightens me. I mean, face it, despite the flashy brochures published by travel agencies, travel is neither always easy nor comfortable. There are language difficulties, misunderstandings and where I usually go, a huge disparity between my relative ... read more

Laura - On Tuesday we went to the Forbidden City, which apparently is not so forbidden now as it even has a Starbuck's!! It was a really crappy day, weather wise, and the sky was really misty. But it all still looked pretty spectacular. It was really cool to be in an enclosed space where all the buildings are traditional Chinese buildings (even the starbucks). We walked through the centre at first, where all the main buildings are and then got lost walking around the maze of alleys and temples, away from the tourist crowds. I think this is the part we really enjoyed the most, and it was cool because not all of the outer buildings have been newly redecorated, so they are more or less in their original form. In the evening we went ... read more

Sorry no photos yet. No idea why but hopefully have some for you soon. We've seen them and they're great. Well worth the wait. Paul - So last night, rather fantastically, we go upstairs to our room and on the television is Arsenal Vs Wigan!! Brilliant!!! Even better - they are showing all the goals from the other games as they go in! Suffice to say, Laura was well impressed and even managed to ask if Thierry Henry was playing. After 10 minutes it was 1-1, great game and Laura was so enthused she had fallen asleep. Well, we were going to the great wall today so I can JUST about understand. Got up bright and early at quarter past 6 and waited twenty five minutes for FLASH to get out of the shower. Apparently washing ... read more

Just a quick note - its not letting us upload photo's at the moment so we will put these on another day. Probably after the Great Wall tomorrow! Fear not blog fans - Broughton is ok!! It was extremely serious heat exhaustion that kept him down for a day or two but being the man that he is, he bounced back and is in fine form. He even managed to haggle some sunglasses off some random bloke after his broke. (and has finally bought a hat to wear in the sun - laura) Friday 5th May - Princess Day (aka Laura’s birthday). Laura: We had a lazy lie in and croissants for breakfast (I can’t believe we managed to get hold of some!) and then went to the Temple of Heaven for the day. It’s a ... read more

hey people i just got back from tibet and am now finally clean after taking a really long shower. the weather here seems so hot now compared to the frigid night at the everest base camp. so yes, i am super tired but i want to tell everybody about my trip, so i have decided to just describe one of the days because it was the most exciting and most important, being may 1st (my birthday). okay, so we woke up at about 5 am to catch breakfast in the restaurant inside our hotel. they had to open the restaurant early especially for us and they were not happy. we took off at 6 o'clock to start our fourteen hour drive to the mount everest base camp. the ride was really bumpy because we were traveling ... read more
