After 20 hours of travel, I was finally able to go to bed in my new room! The journey was actually quite pleasant, aside from having to sit in an airplane for hours:) I started in Toledo Tuesday afternoon, took a quick flight to Detroit, and then on to Tokyo (that was a 13 hour flight). From Tokyo it was another four hours in the air to Beijing. Once in Beijing I met my roommate, who happened to be on the same flight, while in line for customs. By the time we got through customs, met up with Shirley, one of our guides, and got to the dorm, it was almost 12am Thursday! The dorm here is really nice, it is ten times nicer than either of the dorms I stayed in at college. Apparently ... read more

Whitney Houston sings I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. ... This perfectly describes what we saw at two schools today. Keep in mind that the schools we saw today were the best of the best, teaching the brightest of the brightest and being taught by the best of the best. If they meant to impress...they succeeded. Our first visit was with Beijing No. 8 Middle School. This school teaches 2500 students. There are about 40 students per class. The teachers are paid about $10,000 per year. The students are engaged and bright. We visited with the principal for about an hour who had an interpreter. He said there are three things that are focused on currently in the school. That is driving, (note previous email comment ... read more

Hello From China! I loved this shot. This is the new China. I saw this little guy sitting on the ground talking on the cell phone in the Forbidden City. Well today...where to begin. I guess with breakfast. The buffet was unbelievable! I guess that is what happens when you are trying to accommodate so many cultures. There was the typical American food. I am staying at a Holiday Inn mind you. There was an omelette bar where the chef cooks your food as you wait. There was also a dumpling bar where two chefs will make your dumplings to your taste. There was cereal bar with the normal assortment of cereal like you would find anywhere. There was lots of fruit. There were noodles, and many types of bread. There was some type of tofu ... read more

Visitors to Beijing will quite understandably high-tail their way to the major sites of interests as soon as they get off the plane. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall and so on. These places, whilst spectacular and popular will only give you a certain perspective on this immense and complex city. In the meantime, like in any metropolis, life carries on unabashed and uncensored. In the hutongs (alleyways) and suburbs, ordinary people go about their ordinary lives in happy seclusion. Shunyi County, approximately 17km NNE of Beijing proper is unremarkable in many ways. This though to me is part of it's appeal both sociologically and in terms of images that can represent it. Apart from the airport, gated communities, golf courses and Starbucks (yes, really), Shunyi is a largely agricultural ... read more

I have been taking photographs since the early 1970's but have always been a little lazy when it comes to technical know-how. Last year though, i began using a Nikon D70 as my work camera. After a while I began to play with the shutter speed and aperture settings just to see what happened. Now, I have bought my own Digital SLR and intend to use it as a tool to help me get to know China a little better. Tomorrow I go to Qing Dao, next week on to Guilin, Hong Kong and then further afield to Thailand. Today i will practise using the thing! ... read more

We made it. Seven thousand miles, twelve hours difference in time, fourteen hours flight time, four in flight movies, two flight meals and two snacks, many laps around the plane during the flight, but we are here safe and happy. Just returned from an authentic chinese meal that included seven types of dumplings, and food served on a large lazy susan in the middle of the table. It was very good but my chopstick use definitely needs improving. I had a few people from our group write down some of their first thoughts from our first few hours in China's capital. * A couple of people were impressed with the quietness, especially at the huge airport. There were people everywhere and you would have expected it to have been much louder, but it was very quiet. ... read more

Friday night we spent the evening in houhai with gin and tonics and margaritas on the banks of the lake and facing a street with huge screens showing the world cup and beijingers sitting on sofas outside yelling at the football. Major mission on saturday to move us and our stupidly big bags to a hotel in tiannamen square. People on our tour are really lovely - a couple from Denmark now living in Australia and two mad australian girls, Noelle and Cindy! Yesterday was incredible - three hours walking on the great wall. Hard to find words to describe it so have attached some photos. Was really special. It was boiling hot up there and charlotte was near passing out at one stage!! This morning an early visit to the forbidden city - we are ... read more

Beijing... the fast-changing capital of the most populous country in the world, and the only Chinese city I had visited before I came to China this time. My parents took me and my brother to Beijing for a family holiday ten years ago, when I was 13. It was my first visit to Asia, and has since inspired me to come back to Asia several times to see more. Returning to Beijing, I was wondering whether it would still resemble the city I remembered from so long ago, and whether it could live up to my memories... We arrived in Beijing on Sunday on an overnight train from Harbin. After freshening up in the City Central Youth Hostel across the road from the train station, we spent the afternoon visiting the Temple of Heaven Park, Tiananmen ... read more

Well we have had a few more action packed days in this amazing city. Its just so big. No matter where we go or what we do the scale just shocks. And it's heating up too, which cooks the pollution up nicely - we have been lucky though as its not humid which apparently makes the air like a soup. Nice. Early on Thursday we went to Prince Gong's Gardens which were beautiful apart from the terrifying Chinese tour groups with their matching hats and leader with a flag who seem to push each other out of the way to get to the next place on the tour even though they are all travelling in one group! Had lunch with Sam which was wicked as we saw the CBD and caught up with her and learnt ... read more
