Day one of Beijing began like day one of many of my city escapes, a disorganised wander through parts of the city where I'm not quite sure where I am or what I am observing. I started at the Qianmen markets where I bought an iced green tea imagining that would become invigorated and refreshed. Iced green tea is just cold green tea (duh) and therefore it tastes like piss (or at least similar to how I imagine piss would taste). Nevertheless it did still manage to invigorate a nearby pot plant. The rest of the market was just like any other tourist 'market' times a thousand. Asians love to shop and it seems they just can't get enough of cheap tacky mass produced 'souvenirs'. I did manage to find a place that sold hand made ... read more

If you asked Brecklyn what she was most excited for about this trip, the answer was always the same - Pandas! After seeing them at the San Diego zoo, she was in love. So, we couldn't disappoint and miss out on a trip to the Beijing Zoo, where they have a rather large panda exhibit. Doing some research on Tripadvisor, we found that most people were not too keen on the Beijing Zoo's treatment of animals, and that the panda exhibit is one of the very few highlights. It was also a very cheap zoo compared to American standards, so we only planned on visiting for an hour or so with this exhibit being the focus. In other words, we needed to figure out what else to do this day. The Confucius and Lama Temples were ... read more

Went and checked out the Lama Temple this weekend. We missed Lama Temple last weekend because it closes around 4p.m. and we didn't get into the city in time. We've been trying to do some sight seeing at least once every two weeks, so even though we were pretty tired on Saturday morning, we got up early and headed out. The temple was very easy to get to. There is actually a subway stop called "Lama Temple." Once you come out of the subway, the entire street has been modeled to look like old Beijing, with classic store fronts and hutongs; the area is definitely catering to the tourist crowd. There were a lot of tourists heading towards the temple, but there were also a lot of chinese people going as well. Compared to the other ... read more

It would be silly to come all the way to China and not do the Great Wall of China. However its not top on my list of priorites...i mean its just a wall right. There are various parts you can visit – by far the most touristy is Badaling and second is Mutianyu – you can take a cable car up and have the option to take a sledge down it – which sounds pretty fun. The popular areas will always be filled with people and I don't want the plebians ruining my shots – plus I figure I can take a cable car up it when i'm 70. Right now i'm (relatively) fit and able bodied so I decide to do the most strenuous, remote part of the wall - a 4 – 5hour trek ... read more

On one of Stephen's rare days off work, well his alloted day off - we decided to visit the Lama Temple. So we proceeded to show off our new found skills of riding the subway all of one stop ! Fortunately the Lama Temple was located directly above the subway station which kind of made it easy to find - finding the entry wasn't so easy though. So we followed the row apon row of stores selling incense and other offerings for burning at the temple. Finally found the entrance and WOW this is one huge temple. It is an active temple ie amongst the tour groups and stray tourists were plenty of locals and pilgrims visiting the temple to pray. There were lots of different halls with a variety of Buddhas offering a variety of ... read more

Hi everybody, after so much sheep and goat meat in mongolia we went in Beijing straight to a restaurant for the world famous peking duck. What a delicious food. Very crispy duck skin and a superb tasty meat. Beijing is such an incredible huge city. Everywhere modern skyscrapers, but some of the old traditional hutongs (small alleyways) still exists. A city within the city is the forbidden city. above the entrance gate (gate of heavenly peace) hang a huge portrait of Mao, the founder of the people's republic. Hundreds of ancients buildings contains the Forbidden City, which was home to 2 dynasties, the Ming and the Qing. We shared this interesting place with thousands of other tourists. Despite the mass of people it's worth to see it. Another must do, is to visit the Great Wall. ... read more

We are more than 6 weeks in China now. Again, time has been flying. After a long bus trip from Hanoi to Nanning (a 3 million city in Southern China which probably hardly anyone has ever heard of, including us) we were already facing the first difficulties. No one spoke any English, and I mean no one!! So the taxi driver from the bus stop dropped us off at the wrong hotel (not to forget that we even showed him the address in Chinese characters) a nice 4 star place... not the place for us with our big dirty backpacks ;). However, there was one lady there who spoke a little bit of English and she helped us locating our 2 star hotel which was just on the other side of the city. Great! So we ... read more

Thursday 6/23 We began today (after breakfast) with a visit to the Yonghe Gong (Lama Temple), a complex of progressively larger buildings topped with ornate yellow-tiled roofs built in 1694 and originally belonging to the Qing prince who would become the Yongzheng emperor. As was the custom, the complex was converted to a temple after Yongzheng's move to the Forbidden City in 1744. The temple is home to several rather beautiful incense burners, including a particularly ornate one in the second courtyard that dates back to 1746. The Falun Dian (Hall of the Wheel of Law) contains a 20-ft. bronze statue of Tsongkapa, the founder of the reformist Yellow Hat (Geluk) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which is now the dominant school of Tibetan Buddhism. The last of the five central halls, the Wanfu Ge (Tower of ... read more

So you know how I said I wouldn't be online/blogging much since Ralph's laptop died? Yeah I lied. Whenever he's in class teaching English I don't really have a lot else to do so I go on the computers at his work. Although I can't go on facebook of course, boo. But I did remember to bring my camera and lead in, so you can actually have photos this time! Anyway so today I almost fainted for the first time in my life! Fun times. We were going to try and go to Beihei park but half way through the subway trip I just felt like I was going vomit, then had a massive head rush despite not having just stood up. So we went home instead. Soooo Beihei park will have to wait for another ... read more
