China is amazing but can be hard. It’s hard to capture the thousands of amazing, crazy things that happen every day. It's hard to sift through the vast history of one of the most ancient, powerful civilizations in the world. It’s hard to capture the struggle of daily life for the millions of people of the most populous country as they toil to survive. It's amazing to take a stroll along a monument to human fortitude and construction on the Great Wall. It's hard to figure out all the varying religious influences of a place that began the eastern philosophies of the world. It’s impossible to relay the level of smog in the country with the worst environmental record in the world. It’s hard to explain the frenzy of negotiating that takes place with every transaction ... read more

Lieve vrienden en vriendinnen Het avontuur in Beijing is begonnen. Het is nu 11.45 uur in Beijing. Tijdsverschil 6 uur vooruit t.o.v. Nederland. De reis is zeer voorspoedig verlopen. Om 09.30 uur waren wij al in het hotel, maar de studio was nog niet schoon. Dus vanaf 11.00 uur konden wij in onze studio.

24th September 2006 When the alarm went off we leapt out of bed and collected our bags for the day ahead. We had agreed to go to the hotel breakfast, and we knocked on my parents door, discovered they had overslept! We went to breakfast and they were to follow. We encountered a slight problem in that before we could sit down they wanted paying. Kitty was with mum so we had to wait until they arrived. As enthusiastic as we were to immerse ourselves in Chinese culture, only Dad managed dumpling soup for breakfast. We stuck to coffee and sweet toast and jam. For the money we couldn’t complain about breakfast - the equivalent of £0.70p. Our minibus arrived and we joined the other 6 tourists on the bus. Our guide Salina spoke good English ... read more

This is really part two of the last blog, but while the last one was devoted to the city of Beijing, this covers our trips to the main toooorist attractions: The Forbidden City (which was knock yur socks off sort of stuff), the Temple of Heaven (which was... round and templey with crackin' gardens and, of course Mr Dragon) and finallly, our trip to the Great Wall (which was socks right off, feet in the breeze, lying on a lounger with a naked nymphet fanning your big toe sort of stuff???!!) We'll let the photo's do the talking (and your mind do the walking...) Oh, one last thing... ...no... ...its gone. Couldn't have been important. Oh, I know what I was going to say; but it wasn't for the blog. I was just going to ask ... read more

... read more

I left for Beijing on an ITTY BITTY bus that left from campus at 7am on Thursday. The trip took 8.5 hours and was miserable, I’m not gonna lie. When I finally arrived in Beijing I was met by Kara’s Fabulous Friend Shaan, who took me to Kara’s apartment. We went to get some food and D’oh! Locked Kara’s spare set of keys in her apartment. Luckily Shaan lives close by, and he let me nap at his place until Kara got out of work. I was once again in a Western food mood, so Kara, Shaan, Shaan’s Chinese girlfriend Christina and I went to TGIFridays where I got MOZZERELLA STICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was glorious. Unreal. Kara and I then went home and straight to bed because we both had to get up early in the morning. ... read more

Arrived back in Beijing again, this time to see more of the sights than the hospitals...... On our first day back we went to the outskirts of the city to explore the Summer Palace which was where the imperial court used to retreat to in the summer to escape the heat of the city. It was in a lovely setting, surrounded by hills and had an enormous lake in the middle. We spent a relaxing day by the lake, feeding the birds and enjoying ice cream and the relative coolness. Unfortunately in the taxi on the way back we discovered our camera had deserted us (we think probably stolen sadly) so we lost all the photos of the palace grounds.....luckily all the rest of our photos had been safely downloaded onto the laptop so we didn't ... read more
