Hi All,
Phnom Penh is extremely hectic and I think we are both quietly looking forward to finding somewhere a little quieter to stay.
We have visited Angkor Wat temples and many of the other temples in the Siem Reap regin and were absolutely stunned by the beauty of these world heritage sites. One temple had been swallowed by tree roots and in some cases the roots were holding the 12th Century temples up. Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones were filmed here if you get a spare few minutes to have a look at these films again. You will realise just how amazing it must have been to use this as the perfect film set. We have attached some pictures of these for you to see.
We had a hair razing journey on one of the buses from Siem Reap where I constantly felt on edge for the entire 6 hours. The driver was a bully and pushed all oncoming scooters and cyclist off the road into the ditch. I was much relieved to arrive in this city in one piece.
We went to the rather harrowing Killing Fields yesterday and the Genocide Museum and
were moved by the torture that went on during the Pol Pot Regime. So sad to think this only happened 30 odd years ago and makes you realise that we really are very lucky to be living in a country with so much stability.
Their is huge amounts of poverty here and you can't just sit back in cafes without being hassled by the street children, begging you to buy a book or polish your shoes for you. You can't but not feel sorry for them, knowing that if they don't make a few Dolars a day then their fathers will problably punish them.
Keep the messages coming in, we love to hear from you all
With love
Tom and Becca
