Phnom Penh.

Daar moesten we heen! Bij ... read more

On our last day in Saigon we had an impressive day at the Cu Chi tunnels. These tunnels were dug by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war and are so tiny that most Westerners do not fit in. It’s an impressive network and from above the ground you can’t imagine that hundreds of people were living there. They made all sorts of (horrific and painful looking) traps to protect themselves from their enemies. Of course we had to check the tunnels out for ourselves (despite my claustrophic tendencies I had to have a go). After a while the tunnels got narrower and narrower and I started feeling extremely uncomfortable and cramped, so I was glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel (yes, literally!). Our guide was a charismatic Vietnamese guy who ... read more

Once I arrived back in Phnom Penh, I checked back into the Okay Guest house where I knew I would be sure to meet some fellow travelers. I checked into my old room and headed down to the common area. Before I was finished my dinner, I had already met a couple of people including Dave from Canada, who I would get to know better over the next few days. I hung about the guest house the following morning contemplating my next move? Dave had mentioned something about hitchhiking to Ban Lung, too see a crater lake, and do some trekking in the jungle. Throughout the day I continue to meet a bunch of others, Malu, Olly, Chelsea, Shannon, and Efrat. Talking around the tables is the best part of the Okay guest house, and Dave ... read more

The move by public bus was an altogether better experience to travel around Cambodia. the bags were stored in the underfloor spaces and not above our heads. We had allocated seats as well so there is no overcrowding or chickens! The drivers are OK as well, apart from the non stop use of the horn to drive other motorists / cyclists and livestock off the roads to give us a clear route. The overtaking on bends is also a key feature of driving in Cambodia which kept the group on edge. Clearly the best thing was to sleep through the experience as best you can and listen to the IPod which was not an option for us as we still have not replaced ours after the sea water incident in the Cook Islands. Another alternative to ... read more

We set off from Battambang just before 8am. Our goal today was to travel the 100 or so kilometres to Pursat on a norry. A norry is a bamboo train basically consisting of a frame made up of strips of bamboo, two steel wheel axels, and a 2 stroke fanbelt driven motor. Strictly speaking, they are illegal in Cambodia, and there is talk that the government may take measures to eradicate the use of these trains. As well as myself and Chris, there was also a crew of three aboard. You might be asking yourself why does it take three people to drive a bamboo train? Well the problem occurs when you come across another norry traveling the other way. You need to pick up the bamboo frame and take the axels off the tracks to ... read more

Day 6 After our long bus journey yesterday we wanted to have a leisurely time today. We luckily had selected a new guest hostel opposite the Mekong near the bus stop after running the gauntlet of the inevitable touts. We seem to have selected the best place in town at $5 a night. U Hong II. New and clean. The host has been working in the tourism business in this relatively remote town for five years and built a wonderful service. It is only small, three double rooms, an elegant cafe and tourist information office and service. Delicious traditional and western food prepared with flair by two charming cooks in a pristine kitchen . Today, from the options offered we first went with him to the market and bought a fish and various other things. Then ... read more

Day 5 - Kratie Yesterday, after my lazy morning we went to lunch at an amazing cafe called "Friends"just near the Royal Palace. It was started by someone to help street kids- orphans, prostitutes, etc. It is a classy cafe that would be impressive in Kirribilli or Bronte. Excellent tapas. Friendly service. Behind is a great complex of facilities-rehab, school, life skills workshop, hospitality school with several grades, and craft workshop. Most impressive and inspirational. Poor Cambodia is in a very wretched situation. It is almost as though the whole nation is in a depression of guilt and frustration going back several decades. However, there isan enorous amount of aid coming in from everywhere , as well as foreign investment. A lot of evidence of Korean companies. And the Japanese are building a bridge up to the ... read more

Sunday 29th June Finally took off from Sydney after a five hour delaydue to aircraft maintenance. So instead of getting to Bangkok at 10pm got there at 4am. Had a compensatory voucher (from my travel agent for some other mix up) for what seemed to be a 10 star hotel so thought that rather than sit 4 more hours in an airport , took the shuttle bus and enjoyed a few hours of luxury. Then up and on the 8am flight to PP Looking out the window of the wooded hills I couln't help remembering the lovely Cambodian girls I had taught about 30 years ago back at what was then the Westbridge migrant hostel. In their mid teens, they had lost all their older male relatives in the POl Pot regime. They themselves had been force ... read more
