Εμεινε μονη της ... read more

So the time came on Tuesday to say goodbye to Siem reap :-( We had a few new travel buddies, all ladies which was lovely. Camille Crome the USA, Evi fro Belgium and Carrie from the USA. We were heading to Kampong Thom before getting back into Phnom Penh. Our first stop was the Phnom Kulen National Park. Phnom Kulen is considered by Khmers to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia and is a popular place of pilgrimage during weekends and festivals. We had the opportunity to see the riverbed rock carvings better known as the 1,000 lingas. The lingam (also, linga, ling, Shiva linga, Shiv ling, Sanskrit लिङ्गं, liṅgaṃ, meaning "mark", "sign", or "inference")is a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva used for worship in temples. In traditional Indian society, the linga is rather ... read more

We woke up early that morning, Matt went to find somewhere else to stay while I packed up, as we had heard that other hotels down the road offered free laundry and we were getting quite desperate for clean clothes. It didn't take long to find another place just a couple of buildings down. After moving our bags we found the tuk tuk driver we met the night before who was taking us around for the day, Stone he calls himself. Our first stop was the S21 genocide museum, it was created on orders of Pol Pot in the Khmer Rough regime designed for detention, interrogation, inhuman torture and killing after confession from the detainees were received and documented. It was horrific what the people went through there, we saw the tiny cells they were held ... read more

We woke up early the next morning for our trip to see the dolphins. The guy who took us there and back in his tuk tuk, called Sar, gave us a tour of all the produce of Cambodia on the journey. He showed us plants of Thai basil, Lemon grass, Cashew nuts, Limes,2 types of mangoes, Jack fruit, Corn, Cotton pods, Pineapple, two types of star fruit and rose apple which we tried :) he also showed us how to make a whistle out of a papaya tree branch, it was really interesting! All this was just growing on the side of the roads. We went on a boat to try and find the Irrawaddy river dolphins which are rare. We saw quite a lot of them! They only come up for air every 5 minutes. ... read more

Hundreds of students formed two lines along the dusty pathway to the school and clapped as we paraded through. We were nervous and felt undeserving of such an ovation; they seemed eager and overjoyed. When our vans drove down that pathway for the last time, five days later, we did not want to leave. There was something special about that brief stay, something that led us to connect with complete strangers in unimaginable ways. Traveling to rural Cambodia with eleven schoolmates and a handful of teachers was no ordinary spring break. In the remove village of Pailin in Battanbang Provice, we share a life-altering journey. We visited Cambodia with a purpose: to teach at our "Sister School" we funded several years earlier, to connect the isolated village to the rest of the world through electricity and ... read more

Arrived Siem Reap about 4pm. Settled into hotel then walked into the city central area. Here there is a street called Pub St - which, you guessed, has many pubs and eating houses. Very lively area with lots of tourists. We had a cocktail at one pub and then went to the Cambodian BBQ for dinner. This is where you cook you own dinner - meat on a curved BBQ plate, which allows the juices to flow down into a moat around the outside which is full of stock and vegetables. We ate the usual chicken, beef and pork, together with crocodile and local fish. (Must say that we are not too keen on the fresh water fish - a bit tasteless). After dinner went to the night market to see more of the same sorts ... read more

So like I said we were woken up at 6am on day 2, not that we needed waking up we were wide awake and had hardly slept much at all but I think we were both proud of making it through the night lol. Next part was tackling the god awful shower. I refused to walk anywhere without my flip flops on and that included the shower! I couldn't get the hot water on so had a cold shower that trickled out of the shower tap, I don't think I've ever experienced showering over a bucket before in my flip flops. It's so etching I will look back and laugh at but at the time just made me want to cry lol. Brad managed to turn the hot water on so at least he didn't have ... read more

We leave Vietnam today and have done a trip along the Mekong delta, it's not exactly what we thought though as we are going to Cambodia and thought it was mainly a boat trip but it's actually a lot on the bus, probably more. We got picked up about 8am and had a 3 hour drive to the Mekong delta where we got on our boat, because we are staying the night we didn't get long, everything is rushed. We stopped at a little place where they make rice paper and popcorn and sweets which was pretty cool to see but was only there for about 10 minutes. We then had an hour on the boat to lunch where we've been brought to a little restaurant in what feels like he middle of nowhere!! We finished ... read more
