Veal Veng (Long paddock) is up Chinese Cry Mountain (so named after a Chinese merchant who cried when his goods carried by an elephant up the mountain were broken). It was one of the last strongholds of the Khymer Rouge and so was ignored by government until last 5 years. It has gone from a community centre, a school and an unmanned clinic to a bustling village. DWA Pursat has been working here and QSA paid for permaculture and weaving training and a shelter and looms. ... read more

The Dept of Women’s Affairs (DWA) has network of offices in all provinces and districts. However, Cambodia is good in developing national plans and paying for staff but not good at funding resources to make it all work. So QSA has supported the DWA in Pursat province for over 7 years by paying for equipment and training for village women in work skills, business skills and personal development. They are focusing on work women can do at home which will reduce number of women moving to Phnom Penh for factory or “entertainment” work. The increase in income will also increase the women’s value to husbands, if they have one (13% are women headed households), reduce domestic violence and help reduce need to take children out of school. ... read more

We set off from Battambang just before 8am. Our goal today was to travel the 100 or so kilometres to Pursat on a norry. A norry is a bamboo train basically consisting of a frame made up of strips of bamboo, two steel wheel axels, and a 2 stroke fanbelt driven motor. Strictly speaking, they are illegal in Cambodia, and there is talk that the government may take measures to eradicate the use of these trains. As well as myself and Chris, there was also a crew of three aboard. You might be asking yourself why does it take three people to drive a bamboo train? Well the problem occurs when you come across another norry traveling the other way. You need to pick up the bamboo frame and take the axels off the tracks to ... read more

Having just arrived in Pursat, a small town on the road between Battembang and Phnom Penh, after two gruelling days spent traveling through the least explored and mine filled Cardamom mountain range, my intention here is to just say that the full entry about this recent escapade will likely take a couple of days to translate into coherent sentences. Meanwhile. With the second storm in two hours raging above our heads (there's a corrugated tin roof between us), we are recuperating from a lack of sleep and food and more excercise than any but the most masochistic could hope for ....in a single lifetime! Oh, the power has returned for a minute or two and the leak above my bed is weeping again. Despite the overpowering smell of sewerage in the room, this Guesthouse (loosly termed) ... read more

It has been brought to my attention that many days have elapsed without me writing in my blog. for this i appologize but sometimes sitting at the computer can be such a drag, or it can be very hard to find. haha it goes both ways. so here i am in sunny hot dusty sweaty but wonderful cambodia. we are in pursat visiting my friend kris who is in the same program as Jenna and I and doing his practicum here. you may notice that im not bothering with capital letters and much punctuation partly because im lazy and out of school and partly because this keyboard is a real drag. so cambodia has been a very different experience than the rest of our trip. before we came with arranged to stay with a close friend ... read more
