Poipet ........., this is my last day in Cambodia , this Quaint little place , its like the wild west ,and probably the most, tragic, place i've been to in Cambodia.. its really rough here , it seems that there's even less order here than Phnom Penh , and thats saying somethin ,.. but nonethe less very entertaining and cheap ... decided to stay tonight and have an easy days travel to' Paradise" tomorrow, didn't fancy a night in Bangkok , seen it,done it....
I came this way into Cambodia and the journey was like a Four Hour long Roller Coaster , there's only a very basic , very straight road , which i was assured by the driver would be finished next year !!! . There are pot holes everywhere and he was doing Mach Three most of the way, constantly on the horn, ... slowing down to breakneck if he couldn't see the bottom o the hole!! carreering past tankers; horses , tractors and massively overladen motorbikes
I shared the taxi with two Swedish women they didn't say too much through sheer terror i think ... we stopped for a Toilet break and the driver told me to be careful where i stood as there are still unexploded bombs and landmines being discovered daily !!!! The land is very flat around here and the De-forestation is total !! you can see for miles and its very , very dusty , for the first couple of Kilometres we were laughing goin ever all the bumps and dips , but the next 150k were nothing short of torture , a real experience !!! My advice is take the bus ... or save the pennies and fly
On arrival to Siem Reap ,massive , 4 and 5 star hotels line the road it's quite surreal , but i now know this is Cambodia ... , very rich and desperately poor ,side by side ... we got dropped off at the edge of town and the clamour of the Tuk Tuk drivers begins..., $2 into town to suggested hotel ] but i was so traumatised after the taxi journey i would have went /or been taken anywhere !!
Was really tired so had a couple o beers on rooftop bar and went to bed early ....Next day i plodded about and got my bearings, thats when i first encountered the beggars ,and they are always there ... and it can be quite harrowing , but you always show respect and please dont get angry because ,the majority of them only want money to buy food , just to live ,... please give what you can !!! I changed $5 every day into 100 Riel notes to give, and when that was done it was done .......... Then come the" Tuk Tuks " tuk tuk saaa , tuk tuk saaa ....every second every minute all day aaaaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh !!!!!! drives you bonkers , they even come up to you when you"ve just got out of one ????? My solution was to jump into the nearest bar to escape haha , i was half expecting to open the toilet door and see five or six Tuk tuk guys crammed in the cubicle . TUK TUK SAAA !!!
ENOUGH FOR NOW TALK SOON ps don't change any money at border wait til you get to the city/s loads of currency shops and a much better rate xx
