Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

We were here to visit a friend’s wedding. Stayed for 2 days at the lodge. The Resort: All accommodations are cottages and are spread through out the pristinely kept grounds. The total resort area covers about 2 city blocks and has winding paths that meander around the area presenting stunning views of the game reserve below the hill. The game reserve has many types of antelope and several paths that take the hiker down to a little dam and back again. I think the entire loop is about 10km. The whole area is situated outside of Harare (capital city) and away [View Full Entry]

Nkwazi Safaris is a small company that operates 2 large house boats out of Lake Kariba. My wife and I have the distinct pleasure of riding on both of these beautiful boats over the course of a week during our trip to Kariba. The two boats - each sleeping 8 people (not including the crew) with a max capacity for 16 people - are in the process of being remodeled this year. Their names are the Lady May, and Salon Prive. Lady May just went through an extensive power plant upgrade and Salon Prive will be getting some new bathrooms shortly. [View Full Entry]

Now that we were so close to the Victoria Falls we could of course not skip them! Went to the town called Vic Falls and stayed at Shoestring Backpackers. Great place with a pair of massive great danes guarding the place. =) Had a walk to Pizza Inn for dinner, nom nom, but the walk home was Scary! Pitch black, who knows what is hiding in the dark? Buffalos, elephants, stray dogs, crazy people... But we made it home safely. =) The next day we walked to the Falls, about a 20 minute walk. Rented ponchos at the gate, trust us [View Full Entry]

Victoria Falls

The last 4 days have been amazing! On Thursday morning we started our 3 day Hwange experience. Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park. We arrived at the travel agent meeting point at 8:45 to find we were the only 2 people on this trip. We were previously surprised by the lack of tourists around Victoria Falls and it is evermore apparent that the bad political state of the country is putting off many tourists from coming here at the moment though there is no need to worry, these things are blown out of proportion and everywhere we have been feels reasonably [View Full Entry]

Hello England! We arrived today in Victoria Falls after a 11 hour flight first to Jo'Burg then a 2 hour flight transfer. Was shattered when first arrived but after hour kip went a stroll to meet the local wildlife - the first of which were Wild Boar! These were actually wild ones though not like those being served on The Vine menu! Lots of monkeys also (we were told to keep windows shut to stop them coming in!) and lots of elephant dung so presumably we're see some elephants sooner or later! We're exploring Victoria Falls properly later in the week [View Full Entry]

Please when you visit Victoria Falls think twice about undertaking activities which involve using captive animals. Whilst undoubtedly amazing personal experiences, have a thought for the captive animals which are being used to make money for the commercial opperations which exploit them. For example, there are over 50 captive elephants in Victoria Falls which are exploited in elephant-back rides. Most of these are orphans (from culling operations) but some have recently been captured from the wild - taken from one of Zimbabwe's National Parks. Keeping elephants in captivity and utilising th [View Full Entry]

My wife and I visited Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Dec 16- 19, 2008. While we were there we realized that there were lots of things we would like to have known before we visited so that we could have prepared a bit better. So I thought I would post a blog here with some info if you are planning on traveling to Vic Falls anytime soon. Vic Falls Isn't Affected By The Situation In Zimbabwe Is It? A lot of the people we talked to in South Africa said that Vic Falls was not being affected by the issues the rest of [View Full Entry]

I sometimes feel like we are moving to another planet, not to Australia. With Australia on the other side of the world, it won't be easy visiting friends and family in Europe and Africa. It was with that in mind that we planned an extra month in Southern Africa to spend time with old friends and family. Hiring a car in the Cape we started the 5 day trip along the southern coast of Africa. Driving along the Garden Route, which started at Oudtshoorn with its 400 Ostrich farm, we continued through to George then Widerness, an area renowned for its [View Full Entry]

Zimbabwe, no way! That was my original thought. It was the time that the cholera outbreak and Mugabe's horrific lack of response started hitting the press. I didn't think it would be a good idea to go. However, a big part of traveling is meeting people along the way who can give you insight into the place you are considering visiting. We met a lovely couple in Botswana who made me feel less concerned about going (thank you, Paul and Isabelle!) and I'm so glad we did. That said, we decided not to venture too far and stayed in the border [View Full Entry]

Let me start by saying the internet here in Zimbabwe literally takes 20 mins to load Google and so I cant upload photos here but as soon as connection gets better I will chuck them up. Well since last week we have done a fair bit. I left you in Cape town which is where we stayed a couple more nights. Wilson and I climbed Lions head which is a stand alone mountain beside table mountain and we nearly died from dehydration but the view made it very worth while. We then did one of these hop on/off tours round the [View Full Entry]
