Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

Day 24 - Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) - 22/8/09 Woke up relatively early to go white water rafting. The transfer to the falls came at 0745. We finally arrived, filling in waivers so in the case of our death our relatives could not sue the company. We went though all the different rapids, they all had names to put the fear of god in you; The Devil's Toilet Bowl and The Gnashing Jaws of Death, just to name a few. Jumping back into the truck BK was our guide on the Zambezi, we all introduced ourselves and we ask BK why he [View Full Entry]

The bus journey from Windhoek to Livingstone was one of the smoothest, most sanitised, most organised journeys we had taken in Africa, and we hated it. Carrying 90 per cent tourists, running to an actual schedule, making toilet breaks that weren’t just pit stops by the side of a field, it was a highly efficient affair. Gap year backpackers chatted and flirted and swapped travel stories as our double-decker coach roared through tiny villages. I wrote in my notebook, ‘Good God get me of this f**king bus.’ The girl in front of me was one of those great people who fully [View Full Entry]

Hi Again Everybody; Here is part two of our safari, Zimbabwe. We crossed over from Botswana after our Chobe Park adventures. After arriving and setting up camp we had a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls. It's a massive river with Zimbabwe on one side and Zambia on the other. It was great, so relaxing. It was our driver/guide, David's birthday, so it kind of turned into a party. A group of native dancers came to the camp ground after the cruise and put on a really great show with dancing, singing & drumming. It was a great [View Full Entry]

I left Zimbabwe today. I got up early and had my final breakfast watching birds flying over the national park and animals drinking at the waterhole. I lugged my rucksack up to reception and then sat with Rone waiting for our transfer. We both agreed that it has been a blissfully relaxing trip but far too short! The coach arrived to take us to the airport. I had a surprise as I stepped off the coach. A voice called out 'Anna! How are you? You like Zimbabwe then?' I turned and saw the same porter who had helped me with my [View Full Entry]

Day 46 Antelope Park - Great Zim Ruins 23.7.09 Today we left Antelope Park much to everyone’s disappointment to a chorus of “Goodbye from Antelope Park” from the kitchen staff / campsite African band, they then followed it up which an ad lib rendition of “Oasiiiiis need more fire!” which made everybody on our truck laugh. We made our way to the Great Zim ruins to check out Africa’s second largest ruins (second to some pyramids in Egypt apparently), as this involved paying an entry fee of $15 and perhaps learning a thing or two I was the first to dec [View Full Entry]

I had a horribly early start this morning, however an elephant back safari is definitely an experience worth getting out of bed at 5.30am for. I collected my packed breakfast from reception and clambered into the mini bus. I munched on rolls, cheese and fresh scones as we drove to Victoria Falls Hotel to pick up the rest of the group. It turned out I was the only individual in the group. The others were all from various parts of the USA but have been travelling as a group through several countries in southern Africa. We drove directly to the elephant [View Full Entry]

Today was my first full day in Zimbabwe. I woke up early and went to the restaurant in search of breakfast. I found the most amazing buffet waiting for me; bread, rolls, croissants, cakes, scones, jams, butters, whole fruit, sliced fruit, fruit kebabs, cereals, cheeses, cold meats, yogurt, fruit salad, fresh juices, tea, coffee and a menu offering cooked breakfasts! I got chatting to some American guests as I selected my breakfast from the overwhelming choice. The whole group of them have been working in an orphanage somewhere in Zimbabwe. It seems no-one comes to Africa for a holiday, so far [View Full Entry]

After only a brief stay in Johannesburg I travelled back to the airport - to fly to Zimbabwe! I was very glad to leave Johannesburg. I woke up this morning freezing cold and when I looked out the window I found it was pouring with rain. I got to the airport early, had a brunch in the cafe and perused the gift shop before settling into the departure lounge with a book. I was amused to see a giant model giraffe looming over the departure board! Although boarding was delayed we arrived in Zimbabwe on time. I stepped off the plane [View Full Entry]

Sunset view

I had the time of my life in Victoria Falls. The weather was finally warmer, and there was so much to do. I bungee jumped off the 3rd highest bungee jump in the world and I absolutely loved, loved, loved it! Leah and I tandem jumped together and people said we screamed the whole way down, bouncing back up and again, the whole way down again. After the bungee jump, I did a tandem bridge swing. This is similar to bungee but you drop straight down off the bridge and swing like a pendulum. This swing was way more intense and [View Full Entry]

Day 40 Tete Mozambique - Harare Zimbabwe 17.7.09 Another early leave from the bush camp as we headed to the Mozambique/Zimbabwe boarder and this was the longest boarder yet (not to get into Zimbabwe’s but to actually leave Mozambique) with people pushing and barging and bribing the guards to get to the front of the queue. After a while it was out of the city and to our next campsite, Bird Gardens. Bird Gardens is based next to a lake and was very scenic although it had a very run down and ghost town feel to it, partly because it is [View Full Entry]
