Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

We arrived at Victoria Falls around lunch time on the 26th. The campsite that we stayed at was called The Rest Camp. It was where all the old people stay. There was another campsite down the road called Shoestrings, that was a load of fun. But Oasis is not allowed to stay there because it can get to rowdy. This was the last day of the trip for some of the passengers, so we had to do a truck clean. After the truck clean, we watched an information video on all the ways you can scare the shit our of yourself [View Full Entry]

Hyena is alive with excitement at the thought of entering our next country, about which we;ve all heard so much but know little of what to expect. Unfortunately, we’re only entering Zimbabwe briefly for a few days cruising on Lake Kariba, but as we’re the first Absolute Africa truck to enter for 18 months, we feel a bit adventurous. We enter Zimbabwe (avoiding the hawkers on the Zambia side selling fake Zimbabwean Dollars - the hundred trillion dollar note being the favourite) over the Kariba Dam - a stunning border crossing over the high dam wall, built in the 1950s in [View Full Entry]

Fancy Dress Party Africa » Zimbabwe
There is a marketplace in Malawi that has all these used, random, costumes. It's like Goodwill during Halloween. We drew names of someone to buy a costume for. Then we would have a "fancy dress" party in Zimbabwe the following week. It was as much fun to shop for the costume as it was the actual party. The vendors here must know that overland trucks come here shopping for funny costumes. I am not sure which came first, the funny clothes, or the tourists looking for funny clothes. When we stepped out of our big yellow truck, vendors swarmed our truck [View Full Entry]

Heaven in Africa! Africa » Zimbabwe » Gweru
From Harare we went to Gweru , again another small town that was clean and no one bothered you. They had this great pizza place called Pizza Inn, which is located all over Zimbabwe, yum! It is one of my favorite pizza places now! I had to shop for cook shop again, it was my groups turn to cook. This was a challenging experience because Zimbabwe is still trying to recover for it down turn for the last 30 years and stores do not have the freshest products. We made due, it wasn't my turn to decide what cook anyway, I [View Full Entry]

Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe. The Oasis comapy has a house close to the there for all of the crew when thy are not on duty. The first place that we stopped was a garage to get some truck parts. We used teh bathroom at this place and to my suprise, it was one of the nicest bathrooms that I ahve seen thus far. Who would have believed a bunch of mechanics could keep a nice toilet. We then went shopping at this miniature warehouse, the items sold were all in bulk, it was like a mini Costco. We bought [View Full Entry]

Ganze 30 US$ kostete uns das Tagesvisum. Soll Robert sich damit den Allerwertesten putzen......... Noch im Niemandsland kamen die Leute auf uns zugestuermt und wollten uns alles Moegliche und Unmoegliche verkaufen. Es gibt mittlerweile so weni [View Full Entry]

Woe is me Africa » Zimbabwe » Harare
Pretty stressed out Out of all the contacts given to me to attempt to get a hold of here in Harare only one has panned out. Normally that wouldn't be a problem I guess, just the only one that responded and gave me a number to call was my good friend Larry's friend of a parents friend! I had hoped I could plan on one contact getting the ball rolling but that hasn't been the case. The one person was more a business acquaintance here in Harare. So no volunteer work here, and I am not really in the position to [View Full Entry]

At the early morning game tour Lee petted a wild lion and still has one hand. Our “lion encounter” included breakfast which we did not realize. Upon returning to the hotel, our Dining Dominatrix Diva was visibly upset that we declined “her” breakfast. The next morning as she seated us she said “Room 11 - You did NOT eat breakfast yesterday.” Our explanation failed to placate her, but she smiled when I took her picture with Lee. Two vivid memories from the Zambezi River Sunset Cruise: 1. The “Elephant Diet” - one squat and you drop 48 [View Full Entry]

Our first two nights in JoBurg were at the Airport Game Lodge, “Where Wild is Mild, and Game is Tame.” We selected the Pretoria City Tour of the Vortrekker Monument, Church Square, and Paul Kruger House. He knew how to live, but died in exile. We have 10 million Zimbabwe Dollar notes that won’t buy a stick of gum. Zimbabwe only deals in U.S.D. and S. Africa Rand which are also basically worthless but easy to convert. We tried to eat at Wimpy’s, but after our first two choices were “not available”, and we looked at the kitchen, we purchased [View Full Entry]

I stayed here for a week with some close friends in April. April was the perfect time to go as it was not too hot, but there was plenty of sun to enjoy and the sunsets over Lake Kariba were stunning. The whole island is a resort, but not as in the Disney sort, but more of an eco lodge. Spurwing Island sits on the southern (Zimbabwe side) part of the lake near Sanyati Gorge. From the town of Kariba it is about a 40 km boat ride to the island. Its not near any towns or villages, because the island [View Full Entry]
