Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

The internet has been absolutely shocking since Malawi....if it's available it is so slow it takes literally an hour to send one email. After leaving Kande beach in Malawi we made our way to Zambia and to South Luangua National Park on the most hideous roads I have ever been on....dusty, bumpy and never ending. It took us 7 hours to drive about 60 miles. It was very worth it though because we spent a night in the national park going on an evening and morning game drive where we saw lions eating a buffalo they had killed the night before [View Full Entry]

After an amazing experience in the Okavango Delta, we made our way into the Caprivi Strip. Originally, Namibia had no access to the Zambezi River, which was a major trade route. When the British still had control of Botswana, they were able to negotiate for a plot of land near the river, which today is called the Caprivi Strip. The Caprivi Strip is a long strip of land surrounded by water (from the Kavango River to the Zambezi River) and ends at the four corners of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. That night, we stayed at Martin's Drift, which was in [View Full Entry]

Last Drive with the Crew

Victoria Falls is amazing! It is really beautiful, the falls are huge and the spray from them is like really heavy rain, got absolutely drenched going to see them. While most of the truck were off on a suicide mission throwing themselves off the Zambezi Bridge, I went on an elephant back safari. It was fantastic, saw loads of animals really close up and fed the elephants and there was a 9 month old baby elephant walking along side with us. The next day I did a walk with lion cubs aged 8 months, they are gorgeous, have huge paws and [View Full Entry]

Hi Dave here. Long time - no blog! We've now been in Africa for nearly 4 weeks and the main reason for the blogging tardiness is that everywhere we've been the internet is eye gougingly slow. We're currently in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe where the connection is marginally better so it's time for a long overdue update. No pictures here - but I'll add some when we get home in a few weeks. So what have we been up to since the last blog way back in Queensland? First up we flew from Cairns to Alice Springs where we hired a car [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Victoria Falls, Zim. I think I ended the last blog in Namibia, since then we have crammed in an awful lot, but no more skydives! We went Quadbiking across the Namibian sand dunes which was hair raising, as it's all hills and high banks so you constantly feel like you're going to fall off. I swear I could sneeze sand for a week afterwards. We travelled on, stopping at Otitjowongwe cheetha park, watched the wild-ish cheetahs being fed from the relative safety of our jeep, and then the highlight, we got to actually stroke 3 tame cheetahs. If a [View Full Entry]

While at Cheetah Park, they did a feeding while we watched from the truck; awesome to see these guys feed!
The last 2 weeks of the safari was an amazing collection of seeing the world’s greatest wildlife, pumping adrenaline out of my body, being threatened by the most dangerous animals on the planet and having incredible nights with what had become some great friends. After a long weekend in Swakopmund to wrap up the first week, we packed up and headed to get more involved with game and found it quickly. Our first stop was at Spitzkoppe, where we saw (and smelled- terrible, by the way) the largest seal breeding ground, home to some 100,000 squealing seals. That was followed by [View Full Entry]

Gringos at their best

May 4, 2006 - Day 19 - Today began with another optional game drive, which I also did not attend. They weren’t nearly as lucky but did see a hyena with two babies very early on and very close to the truck. Once they were back and breakfasted we took down the camp and started making our way to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This was our first complicated border crossing, in that we all had to pay to enter the country but were unprepared for how it would all work exactly. For example, I expected to pay $30, or about 200 South [View Full Entry]

Thundering Clouds of Smoke
Down at Devil's Lookout
Unless you are a journalist or reporter, crossing the border is not actually a harrowing experience. No one is going to take you to a back shack and mercifully interrogate or make you disrobe in front of some official with latex gloves. In all honesty, they barely acknowledge you. The biggest hassle is trying to get change back when paying for your visa. Always feigning they don’t have change in that particular foreign currency and if you are desperate for change you have to wait till someone with the exact money comes along with your particular currency. It’s a bitch. If [View Full Entry]

Before the haze of gin starts....
Three Crates of Gin Later The booze was flowing faster than our barge down the Zambezi. By barge, I really mean a motorised raft with a toilet cubicle, one man bar (plus three crates of gin), life jackets in the grate below the canvas roof (completely out of my reach) and some tables and chairs for support when the booze gets the better of us. The emergency exits are to your left, right, front and back over the railing. It was a Drifters only barge with our rowdy crowd and Leon’s trio. They were taking in the relative luxury of being [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we went on our helicopter ride over the Victoria Falls. We thought we would give you a visual picture of the trip. Neither of us had been in a helicopter before, so it was a cool experience. There were just 4 passangers and the pilot and you got an amazing perspective of how huge the falls are. They are 1.7 km wide (Niagara Falls is 1 km) and 105 m high (Niagara Falls is half that). The water level is at the highest it has been in a few years now, so you can see the mist from 50 km [View Full Entry]
