Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

all a few of the things we have seen close hand in the past few days, except of course malaria, although I do seem to be bitten by many many many misquitos. argh. taking malaria tablets though. In Vic falls at the moment. took us two days to get here via minibus from windhoek. I don't particularly reccomend this method, but it was our only option. I'll explain more later. tomorrow. Right now we are having problems withthe currency, we have usd, we need zim dollars (1:72,000) the banks are closed and you can be arrested for exchanging on the street. [View Full Entry]

Now its big and impressive and very very wet. Its the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. We have certainly viewed the falls from every angle... ...Johnny did a bungee jump and we went for the safer option of a Helicopter ride. That evening we went on a sunset booze cruise and then a flaming Absinthe session courtesy of Pierre at a engagement / stag and separate Hen celebration. Next day - severely hungover - it was white water raft - the great Zambezi... ... white water rafting - it was bad... one blind (temporarily), one puking, one damaged ankle, one mashed [View Full Entry]

L'ultraléger a l'air ultrafragile.

I can fly!

Having survived being shocked on an electric fence & nearly drowning in the Zambezie it was time to find another novel way to cheat death, todays choice was a helicopter flight over Victoria falls. Whilst waiting for the helicopter we got to watch videos of the previous flights from that day. It soon became obvious that they filmed you getting on & off the helicopter & just cut in stock footage of the falls, especially obvious when they showed the sun setting on an 11 am flight. The helicopter flew us several times over the falls, across the wide Zambezie at [View Full Entry]

We went to AFRICA!!!!!! It really happened, and what an experience it was. I think this trip tops just about anything else we have done in our short lives. Mike and I met up at the Baghdad International Airport and stayed one night in Baghdad as planned then off to Dubai, U.A.E to connect with our flight to Johannesburg South Africa. It was a 9 hour, early morning, flight and we landed in Johannesburg at 10:15AM where we were met by an agent from our safari booker (travel agent). She handed us all our travel documents and walked us to our [View Full Entry]

Victoria Falls, Zim side
Victoria Falls, Zim side
This is the main falls. From the Zim side there is more of an overview, as opposed to being right on top of the Falls on the Zambian side. The views from both sides are mind boggling.
The last country on the itinerary during this wonderful trip to Southern Africa is Zimbabwe; formerly known as the bread basket of the region but now a country devastated by a collapse of the farming sector, chronic shortages of food and fuel, hyperinflation and massive levels of unemployment. Tourism levels have also plummeted in recent years due to instability and violence, but as a humble blogger I will leave further political comment to the politicians, and simply share as always my travel experiences. The previous journal left off in Livingstone, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. [View Full Entry]

On our way to Vic Falls via Bulawayo
Hi Kids - Sorry no updates lately. I’ve been so busy with work and travels that I’ve lost track of this thing. Last weekend I went to Victoria Falls with my friend, Emily. I visited Vic Falls National Park to see the falls which are stunning. I didn’t get a chance to see them from the Zambian side but everyone I asked who has seen both says the Zim side is better. On Christmas Day, we went bungee jumping off the Vic Falls Bridge which is the 2nd highest bungee jump in the world at 111m. That was terrifying with a [View Full Entry]

The train from Bulawayo to Vic Falls was ok, nothing flash, just two small bunks in a very small room, an unlockable door and a window blind that kept shooting up. Still, it made a change from having to drive on the truck all that way. We arrived at Vic Falls at 7am, tired and hungry, to find that bread wasn't available anywhere in town that day. We had a great, but expensive, time there. I went on an amazing microlight flight above the falls, we both did the "Sundowner Cruise" and watched the falls from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian [View Full Entry]

I think this is from the bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia - where we did the bungee jump.
The train to Vic Falls the next evening was pretty uneventful. One of the quietest sleepers I have taken anywhere - mostly because there were not really any stops I think, but if there were I didn't notice. We had a first class cabin for the two of us with just two beds in, and it only cost $5 each. It wasn't that luxurious though - the washbasin was a nice idea, but its use had been subverted somewhere along the years since the mirrors were made - the RR of Rhodesia Railways etched on them. In Vic Falls we arrived [View Full Entry]
