Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

Down in Africa Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls
Don't worry, I'm still alive. So is Bo. Its been so long since we wrote anything that I dont know where to start. We've made our way from Nairobi down here to Vic Falls, we continue on the overland truck until Joburg, then we are going to make our way to Cape Town for a while. The month has flown by. But I've seen lots of elephants so its all good. Basically, we went straight to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater for game drives when we started the trip. Then to Zanzibar to spice things up a bit (hehe I'm funny). [View Full Entry]

However, under the rule of its current dictator, Robert Mugabe, who lines his owns pockets with extorted wealth, the supermarkets shelves are empty and his countrymen and women are forced to eat scaps from rubbish dumps just to survive. Meanwhile rich government officials act as the mafia to local businesses. This is why I don't condone [View Full Entry]

Forgot to mention this in the journal. Very excited to see this library and meet the librarian. It was all on card catalogue! And it was very busy. I think that I can now claim this trip on tax? ... [more]
James and I decided that because there was no water on the Zambian side of the border, we would investigate the Zimbabwean side. This, however, was not the only reason. We had also booked a jet boat trip and visit to see lions, which we were both super excited about. Our excitement waned considerably when we discovered that the jet boat was cancelled because there was not enough water (same old story!). Although the lion thing was not until 3pm, we caught a free shuttle to the border at about 10am. The border crossing itself took about 30 minutes, after which [View Full Entry]

Although this may be the longest blog so far it is only because the second part of my Africa trip contained more adventure and once in a life time experiences than I have ever experienced in my life. In this blog you will among many other things read about the African rollercoaster, porn parties, how I became a lion whisperer and the scariest moment of my life...let the fun begin! We dont need water to have fun in a boat

We were picked up at 8:15am for the ride out to the white water raft start site. We were both excited but to say the least apprehensive having seen the power of the river at the Falls (and having seen the video). We were given an excellent (and amusing) safety lecture and were kitted out with our lifejackets, helmets and paddles. Jen opted for the chicken boat in which you don’t have to paddle yourself and I opted for the normal boat. In my boat were also Potsy and Brett (who took the front most two positions). I was second on [View Full Entry]

Jen went off shopping with Steph whilst I was transported with Potsy, Brett and Shannon (all three very hung over) to the ‘Adrenaline Centre’ at the top of the Zambezi Gorge - just downstream from the bridge which links Zimbabwe and Zambia. The views from the gorge top are incredible (and scary considering that we were about to leap into it). Below on the river you can see the tiny looking white water rafters on the river. We were first given a safety drill before being kitted out with our harnesses. I was in a bit of a daze as [View Full Entry]

Up early for departure soon reaching the border crossing from Botswana into Zimbabwe. A stinging visa fee of $50US (interestingly the Aussies and most of the other nationalities had only to pay $20US). On arriving we booked our forthcoming activities. Amazingly, with the encouragement of Shannon, Jen has booked to do the whitewater rafting on the Zambezi which is incredible as se normally doesn’t even like getting out of her depth in water. She’s also doing a walk with lions whilst I do the adrenalin day at the Zambezi Gorge. The poverty in Zimbabwe is immediately apparent in the [View Full Entry]

Day 111: Sunday, Sept 10: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia I crossed the border into Zambia to do some white water kayaking in the Zambezi River, starting right after Victoria Falls. Its a tandem Kayak with a professional in the back and me in the front. After practicing a few manuveurs, we were off. Immediately in the first rapid, we tipped over and I was under the kayak in the water, I only gave him one chance to flip us upright and I bailed out of the kayak, its a weird feeling to hold onto something to keep you under water on purpose [View Full Entry]

Day 100: Wednesday, August 30: Kande Beach to Zambian Border Today was a pretty early start. This was a good thing, we ended up having a tire blowout on the road (it wasn't a true blowout, but still took us over an hour to change it.) We then headed to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi to do some dinner shopping, last minute gift shopping and the post office for people that have bought too much stuff. From there, we got to the border of Zambia and got a visa waiver because we are only going to be in the country for [View Full Entry]

An amazing sight
An amazing sight
This photo was taken for us by a honeymooning Zimbabwean couple. They got in for about $5 together, compared to our $35. One of the few perks of being a Zimbabwean at the moment.
Zimbabwe was emotional. With mixed feelings about our visit to a country torn apart by a vicious dictator, the decision was at least not ours to make, as our tour ended there. Zimbabwe is in dire need of assistance, but I guess it does not have enough oil, or pose enough threat to be worth any first world intervention. So I guess Mugabe will grow fat and old, untouched, which watching his people suffer and die. Zimbabwe had just revalued their currency a month before we arrived. Prior to this, you needed 20 of their largest banknotes just to make up [View Full Entry]
