Geo: -23.95, 31.117.Need pics of camp gateOne South African described Letaba as a paradise compared to the camps further south. It has big trees and lots of palms is scenic. We always enjoy camping there though.not much big game but lots of neat birds (goliath, saddlebill, maribou stork drove toward Mopani and saw a secretary birdWe have always enjoyed camping at Letaba but were a little worried this year because of the drought and would there be any water in the river when we got there. Letaba is usually the furthest north we go in the park to camp. Many of the South Africans we talked to said Letaba was a paradise compared to the parks further south. The landscaping around the campground is very lush compared to some of the others and there are some nice ... read more

Geo: -23.943, 31.1411Were #1 at the gate which is not so surprising here as it would be at Satara or Lower Sabie but we wanted to be able to have something of a game drive as we headed into Phalobowra. We had barely left the gate and got to see 3 adult and 3 baby hyena out on the road. The babies of course are so cute looking but they were being urged back off the road by the adults. of theAt around 6:22 we decided to stop at the waterhole fairly close to the entrance. As we approached the road we both were startled by the sound of a lion roaring! Drove down the road and there was a lion right by the waterhole. We watched as he moved from the edge of the water ... read more

Geo: -23.95, 31.117Letaba Rest Camp is one of our favorites because of the abundance of trees including some impressive palms, river views, and a bush feel in the campsite. Because of this it is as very nice place to see many different types of birdlife right inside the camp. The general game outside the camp was plentiful but for those in seach of "big teeth" animals, they were not as prevalent. Jerry and Tom saw no lions, we saw three.Still, when you get away from the camp and out on the roads you can see incredible night sky, hilly vistas, and sunsets. Beautiful area !... read more

Geo: -23.95, 31.117Jerry Hey and the Hyena "There's nothing out there " -- except that on the morning this shot was taken our friend Jerry, as boys often will, stepped out to take an early morning pee. It was still just before dawn but he heard footsteps in the leaves and as he later explained he sleepily thought it was Robert come to join him. He looked over his shoulder and low and behold OMG there was a hyena! Ack. Then, as Laura was just returning herself from the 'proper place' for such activities Jerry began telling her about the hyena. Still early, and knowing Jerry -- skeptical, Laura looked toward our tent and sure enough, there was a BEEG hyena. She jumped into the car and stayed until it wandered on off. Later that day ... read more
