22 Oct - we leave South Africa and cross the border...eventually, into Mozambique. One of the more chaotic borders and as only Livie and I have visas, it's a long, hot wait while the rest of the guys get their visas and passports stamped. Interesting change in countryside. Poverty is instantly more apparent, scattered single storey houses, villages rather than towns and cities and more chaotic driving. We arrive at the campsite late afternoon to find 3 extremely cute collie dogs. I'm in my element playing with them, sooooo cute. Very windy night (and that's not due to the pap we have for dinner - a white, mealie African dish, cross between rice and mashed potato!) so we head to the bar. Very drunken, the first one of this part of the trip though. Involves lots ... read more

If it’s one dive trip to be without my cameras, it had to be this one. The one where humpback whales swim up to your boat with their calves in tow. The one where bottleneck dolphins escort you through the waves to your dive sites. The one where loggerhead turtles and 8m long whale sharks laze on the water next to you during surface times. Diving in Mozambique is something special. On my first dive to Manta Reef we saw humpbacks, whale sharks, dolphins, turtles, mantas, and 2-meter long white-tip sharks. By the end of the day our boat no longer stops when we see another unmistakable tail waving to us from the waters. The deep dives in Inhambane off Praia do Tofo are far out and the transport out in the small boats are not ... read more

I like to spend some time in Mozambique The sunny sky is aqua blue And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek It's very nice to stay a week or two And maybe fall in love just me and you “Datz mah co-co-nuht!” The woman yells at Tony from two huts down. Tony looks down at the coconut on the table outside our hut and points. “Datz MINE!” she yells again. “Well, then take it,” Tony yells back. The woman briskly walks past us, muttering and hunched over, a string of surely bad wishes in Portugese, leaving her alleged coconut in our possession. Apparently in some developing African countries, real estate purchases come with a slight twist. You can go in and buy the right to the land, but the trees on the property still belong ... read more

“One thousand meticas, your fine.” The Mozambican policeman sentences Tony for driving over a street divider in swerving from hitting two people sitting in the middle of a pothole-stricken road in pitch dark. There were no signs, no visible clue as to the street splitting into two ways. The policeman sits waiting with his tattered notebook, looking to his fellow officer on the right. Tony protests that he isn’t paying a fine for something that ridiculous. “How much you have? OK, two thousand meticas, your fine!” Tony shakes his head, We’re on holiday, we haven’t got that much money on us! “Where you come from? Botswana!” as he looks at the plates. “Two thousand meticas,” he holds out his hand. Tim tells him to give us the ticket and we will go pay at the police ... read more

So this is the first chance I've had in a while to update things. Currently I am in Maputo, Mozambique. This is a very pleasant city, lots of tropical plants, large trees with overhanging branches, old aesthetic buildings of Portuguese infuence. Not huge and asphyxiating like Johannesburg. Of course, there is the typical African street markets, beggars, trash strewn about, etc. But I have to say, that I am becoming more accustomed to all of that. For better or worse, it doesn't seem as unusual or dramatically discouraging to see dirty, shoeless children rooting through broken glass to find something of value. Certainly everywhere has its destitute, America is no exception, but it just seems to be overwhelming here. Anyhow, when I last signed off I was on the way to Durban. I ended up spending ... read more

As you have probably noticed with the scarcity of my updates... internet is not very available in the heart of Africa. I've been on an overland trip through Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and am now in Mozambique. The trip has been amazing so far and apparently great things to come in the last 5 days. I've seen elephants charging, I've dodged crocs and hippos, fallen down the falls... We are only 6 in our group including our fearless leader Chris so we have formed quite a nice little family. We had Jim and Lauren a father and daughter duo from Oz. Lauren is only 16 so we have been introducing her to some "sin" in a nice safe evironment!! :) Next we have Katie the athlete... you can expect to see her rowing for the Dutch team ... read more

Southern Mozambique (All hostel recommendations etc are at the end of this blog) So this was our final stint in Africa and it certainly didn't disappoint. After a very brief stay in Maputo we were wedged onto a bus at 4.30 am until it was full and then they crammed on about ten more locals and we all headed in one coalesced lump for Tofu about eight hours North along the coast. Tofu Tofu has become somewhat of a diving mecca. One of our reasons for going there is that you are virtually guarenteed to see whale sharks all year round and that is the one thing we've been hunting all over the world in all the 'Guaranteed-to-see' places which we seem to turn into 'Not so much as a fin sighting' places! So, somewhat predictably, ... read more

Time was rapidly running out, so we made a beeline for Tofo in Mozambique, intending to have a couple of weeks diving and relaxing on the beach, to recover a tan which had slowly disappeared in the South African winter! We arrived and pitched our tent in fatima´s nest, only to find a cloudy sky and news that all the Manta Rays and whale sharks (the 2 things Tofo diving is famous for!) have gone AWOL, not quite what we had in mind for our return to the "promised land" of Mozambique! However... we met some really cool people and had a great time at a local Shabeen (local bar) knocking back, the surprisingly tasty "Tipo Tinto" rum and the not so tasty "paradise" gin! Dancing away to the African tunes and showing all the rhythm ... read more

Mozambique was an absolute blast as expected. Our trip had three purposes; firstly to relax a bit, secondly to serve as a week of saying farewell to our friends and family and lastly as a place to do our commitment ceremony. Unfortunately as a result of logistics and circumstances, we could not get everyone that we wanted to be present to be there. There was a shortage of space and flights. We had 21 people in total and it was still an amazing week. We arrived on the 21st of July, with our parents, roz, Cailen and Bernhard´s sister, Ingrid. For the first three days the weather was not that good, but not terrible either. Not much happened in the first three days, except for good seafood and general laziness. On Wednesday, most of the group ... read more
