Haha forgot to add this to the post below... When we we in Maputo the time before, last week, we had a first hand experience of the corrupt police force! Ruth had told us things but we thought she must've been exxagurating, like you'll think I am now...but I swear this is the complete truth. We were driving home from watching the football, Ben was driving, and the policeman pulled us over. Ben gave him his license, which he held onto, and then proceeded to tell us that we'd driven over the line on a red light. The light had turned red so we'd stopped, apparently over this "line" - funny coz there are no road markings in Maputo :P. He said we would have to go to the police station to pay a fine. Ben ... read more

Just another quick one, as Mozambique is a ridiculously expensive country I have discovered and this stupid internet cafe is costing me 3mets a minute! (Which reminds me, Mum please check your facebook about money matters! Hotmail doesnt work here again!) We ended up only staying in Maputo for one night, it might be the capital but it's a hole! Imagine a dirty grotty dangerous city that you hate, then times it by ten. The people aren't nice, the place is dirty and there's litter EVERYWHERE and the pavement is torn to pieces, you can tell the country is recovering! It's just very war-torn and a mess and we weren't enjoying spending time there, there were lots of places the hostel suggested not to go to because of muggings and we found we just didn't want ... read more

It was great to leave Maputo in a car that worked again, I was spo happy that on the way out of town I made the mistake of smiling at a policewoman in the back of a truck which pulled up next to us. Lesson number 3 of African travel - never smile at the police! We were summarily pulled over and the conversation covered the following points: • Driving without shoes is illegal in Mozambique - I pointed out that I had sandals. • Where is my license - always hand over the £5 international driving permit in case of request for money to give it back. • Where is my triangle - in the back • Fire extinguisher - also here in the back. • Are you carrying petrol on the roof - no ... read more

Heluu!! Midt inne i ingensteder! Men det var lys i enden av tunnelen!!Vi kom frem til tidenes luxury lodge, ved stranden, med beachbar og en stor fin hytte til ... read more

March 1999: In Beira I had staved off Malaria with a dose of Larium (a nasty cocktail in itself) and rested my aching sweaty body enough to continue on to the beach side town of Inhambane for more rest. I sat in a nice cool little cafe across from the bus stop waiting for my afternoon connection. I had convinced the porters to let me carry my backpack onto the bus with after it was thrown on the roof with chickens and fish baskets the trip before and still stunk. I sat in a single seat towards the back and took my book out for the voyage ahead. I noticed that the two young guys in front of me were nicely dressed so maybe business men or government staff. One of them soon turned around and ... read more

Welcome to Mozambique, as usual my border shirt (the Liverpool one) did the trick by giving me something to bond with customs officers over. Football truly is a universal language. Entry to Mozambique was smooth despite a disorganised border post, the SA side is pretty well laid out, the Mozambique side, well it’s a couple of sheds and lots of people standing about. The only exits from the border post were two sand roads one heading east and one north, no signs, but asking 3 different people identified that Maputo was the main road (that’s the sand road north to you and me). We are now truly in Africa, no tar, no signs and pretty soon a police stop, quick check for papers and a very friendly direction that Maputo is ‘straight straight’. The road however ... read more

14 day trip - Started a few days before Christmas at Port Edward on the south cost of Kwa-Zulu Natal, then followed the cost north and entered Mozambique at Kosi Bay border post and drove up to Inhambane, with a few days stop over and New Year at Xai-Xai Bay Resort on the way up and then ending at Guinjata Bay Resort. Exited Mozambique at Komatipoort border post and returned to Durban via Swaziland. Passed through four border posts without an issue or even waiting long. Generally 20 minutes per border post. Furthermore was not hassled by anyone at any of the border posts. Throughout this round trip 220v electricity, potable water and coms were available without a hitch.... read more

The cancelled trip to Maputo was back on when I heard I wouldn't be going to Korea in December. So after a frustrating start to the trip when Annie locked herself in the bathroom and Roisin's dad had to break the door so we could get her out, we started the long drive to Maputo entertaining ourselves with confusing the Garmin since we knew the route better. This was mine and Annie's third time in Maputo so we knew the drill but we were lucky enough to explore the town more(The Garmin is definately worth the rands). We went on a quest to find internet services(quite a mission since most places close down for Natal(Xmas) and found the Nautilus Coffee shops(Maputo Mall and Julius Nyere Road). They had good food - we savoured the popular pastel ... read more
