In the month of May, our experiences fell generally into: (1) our house and furnishings, (2) trying to obtain our legal residence card, (3) dealing with ants, (4) some training which resulted in visiting three cities, (5) warmth shown to us by people in Ksar, (6) dar chebab activity and (7) a little illness. Here are some short videos to entertain you. :) Wedding Parade Outside of our Window - Typical Conversation in a Key Shop - Our Furniture Being Made - Our House Key Being Made - So, we realized that we had a serious ant problem when they started opening the frig to help themselves! LOL! Fortunately, they are just the very annoying little black ants and not the bitey kind that really make life miserable. Regardless of the type, they love meat and ... read more

April 2013. This blog entry is a summary of the month of April, so a bit lengthy. Due to hectic circumstances and bad internet, we have not been able to keep our stories flowing regularly and for that, we apologize. We hope this summary provides an idea of this crazy month in Morocco. As for April in the US, Happy Birthday, Adam! The most important thing we want to communicate right now: Ksar el Kebir is, simply, the most alive town we have ever seen, and we have been to A LOT of towns and cities over the years! To compare its business with the streets of Paris is, unbelievably, an understatement. People are everywhere, all of the time after 10 a.m. (except Friday (the holy day) and the daily lunch time when everyone goes home ... read more

3/30/2013 TITLE: Ksar El Kebir begins In less than 24 hours in Ksar, we have a new host home, we have walked around town, met many people, set a meeting with an association and come to terms with our new environment. It was exciting to wake up and think about what might happen on the first full day, but not exciting to think about our toilet or shower situation. “It is what is” is a mantra we seem to start many days with. However, this morning, we ignored those aforementioned unfortunate issues and went down for breakfast at 9:30 a.m., the time we were told breakfast was regularly served. It was the typical and yummy bread, laughing cow cheese, olive oil, olives and hard-boiled eggs breakfast. Ann was so happy to see the coffee and hot ... read more

First and foremost... THANKS FOR HANGING IN THERE AND WAITING FOR US!!! Due to circumstances beyond our control (and our belief!!!), we have been delayed in writing! We are back and shall resume normal posts. We will try to compress the month of April for the sake of your eyes and patience! 3/28/2013 TITLE: Hitting “pay dirt” in some ways, but not in others….. Looking out the window as we arrived in Ksar by train, provided a glimpse of a city much larger than our former town of Ain Cheggag. The train stopped and we threw off our bulky luggage onto the concrete platform. To our immensely happy surprise, after the very trying mishaps in Rabat, there was a porter with a cart. The porter nicely handled our bags and also found us a taxi!!! It ... read more

When you spend a lot of time with people, even the altruistic people deciding to be volunteers for the Peace Corps, you realize that people are just people. There are the go-getters, the geeks, the talkers, and shy people. There are cliques and loners. There are people so passionate about various causes that you can ruffle their feathers without even meaning to – but each means well in his or her own fashion. There is a never ending stream of opinions, but obvious respect for most. That being said as simply an observation, we have made some really good friends here, the kind you hang on to forever. But, as is the Peace Corps way, we have now said our farewells to them as we all disperse to our various locations. The apron strings have been ... read more

So I wrote a whole blog yesterday, but for some reason it decided to delete itself, probably to punish me for not updating for so long. Anyhow, the past two weeks have been pretty crazy. I have started my new classes, ranging from French Literature to Modern Standard Arabic, and all last about 2 or 3 hours twice a week. Class is long and tiring but really beneficial. I have gotten pretty good at drawing camels as my stay-awake tactic in class. As far as last weekend goes, my friends and I went on a trip to Tangiers and Asilah. Tangiers is a city right on the coast and is very close to Spain, in fact you can see Spain when you are standing on the beach. It was a really fun city and the medina ... read more

Given we had ridden so many amazing routes during our tenure in Morocco we could hardly be disappointed that today’s ride wasn’t one of them. We had elected to head for Larache, which sounded a pleasant enough Atlantic coast resort and allegedly had a top end boutique hotel, the Hotel Riad which would offer a welcome change from the sub-backpacker standard of our smelly Meknes Riad. Studying the map we felt it would be far more interesting to cut through the countryside rather than sit on a dull motorway via Rabat but we needn’t have bothered. If Morocco is some kind of world centre for sh*t driving then the epicentre of sh*tness had to be Tangier. As you drew closer to Tangier so it seemed the worse the standards of driving became. We had ridden through ... read more

(I know this is a day late, whatever) Happy Independence Day! عيد الاستقلال سعيد Today AmidEast went to Asilah, a small beach town to the north of Rabat (a little south of Tangier). We rode on a bus up there for a couple hours, it was really hot. Once we got there we walked around the Medina, then ate some lunch. Then MSJ walked sort of out of Asilah (for some reason we always find ourselves way outside of the tourist areas) and we found a cool beach that had rocks and kids and fishermen. We then got ice cream and sodas and Sara bought a kite. We continued to walk around for a bit, talked to some guy who spoke decent English, and then ran into a beggar child when we were getting ready to ... read more

Turns out Casablanca was pretty much a bore- not even Rick's could save it. Alas, it's now obvious to me that the REAL Casablanca was a set solely the property of Pinewood Studios tm. So, I've come up the coast to the cool and Cooler seaside town of Asilah. Soph, I think you'd like it here- there's art everywhere, paintings on the streetside walls and everything. For some reason Morroco does seem to hold the vestiges of a Hippy's paradise.... read more

Asilah is a beautiful town. The Medina is perfectly built for the climate - narrow passageways, open rooftops and courtyards, communal corridors in houses and all painted in perfect white. There’s an old palace with an open balcony 20m above the rocks once used to execute infidels and christians along the beachfront. Another beach 3kms to the South of town is larger with big waves good for surfing, and amazing fish restaurants where we had a huge 3-person Tajine. We got here by train from Tangier. Trains in Morocco are really efficient, on time, and there was even a teaman! ... read more
