So I never wrote the last blog for my final week in Morocco. It was probably because it's been so depressing to think about...The last week flew by, I was excited to go home but also dreading saying goodbye to everyone. I slept in my friends' house a few times that week and the night before I had to leave I just started bawling. I didn't know if I would ever see some of these people again. The resident director's family was about 30 people so I hugged and kissed them all goodbye and then just went home crying my eyes out. My family tried to comfort me but kept saying "stop stop you're not leaving yet!". I drew a few portraits for them the night before as a goodbye gift, which they really loved. The ... read more

So this week I have been in a weird mood. It's getting to be the end of the program, I only have one month left and it's really bittersweet. I am craving home(I legitimately had a dream about eating Domines Pizza last night) but at the same time I can't bear the thought of saying goodbye to my host family. They are the best part of this program hands down and I can't believe I have only known them for three months, they make me feel like I have been part of their family forever. I've been looking at jobs for next semester online and I'm also starting to look at different programs through with I can teach in China or Taiwan next year, and that's absolutely crazy to think about. The other day we had ... read more

So I am not sure if I said this before, but the whole time I have been here my program director, Madiha, has been pregnant. We got an email at the very end of the break that the baby had finally arrived! This was especially exciting because we have pretty much been on the edges of our seats trying to guess the gender...turns out she is a girl! Her name is Safiya and she is TINY. Aliya, her two year old sister is fascinated but also quite jealous (as to be expected). There was a party for her birth the other day, as is customary to Moroccan culture once the baby is about ten days old. We had amazing food, pastilla made of almonds, vegetable tartes, artichoke and cheese wraps, and then piles and piles of ... read more

I have a LOT to say about the last weekend, however I have to write fast because I have a cold and I just took Nyquil, I want to get this finished before I fall asleep.... Firstly, a week ago we had our CIEE culture party at my Resident Director's house. It was amazing, we all wore traditional clothes, ate couscous, got to dance with bellydancers, and got henna done for the first time. My Director's two year old daughter also got henna done, and it was hysterical because it was only on her palms, and she was clearly not content waiting for it to dry. They eventually had to bribe her to wait longer by adding small amounts of glitter to her hands every once in a while, but it did not change the look ... read more

Oh! So I just remembered a few things I didn't include in my earlier blog. First of all, it is totally normal for cats to walk in and out of our classrooms while we are in the middle of lectures, it has happened three times to me in the past two days. Secondly, I was talking with my host family last night, and I found out that there is an Eid, or holiday, on October 26 called "The Festival of Sheep", where each family buys and slaughters a sheep. There is a story in the Quran where Allah called upon Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as a way to test his faith. When Abraham was just about to take Ishmael's life, Allah commanded him not to, and provided him with a sheep to slaughter instead, ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated in a while! It's been crazy busy here--we finished a single 3 credit course in a span of two weeks so that means 5 hours a day of classtime then homework and whatever else you have enough energy for. I have started to get used to the ridiculous amount of catcalls Moroccan men make, everything from "Beautiful! Bonjour! Hola como estas?? ***kissing noises****" to actually following you around and asking ridiculous questons even if it's super clear you want them to go away. I actually pretended to be mute once. For some reason they also seem to think I speak Spanish, and constantly say things in Spanish to me, which is odd considering I look even less Spanish than I do Moroccan...It happens to all of the girls we are with! My ... read more

Yesterday was definitely the most cultural experience I've had here so far. I went to a party where we celebrated the birth of a new baby in a family related to my host parents. There were probably more than fifty people in the house and everyone was wearing traditional moroccan djellabah. There was SO much food, and luckily there were six vegetarians so we got our own table and didn't feel awkward! There were about a million little kids there too, and they were ranging in age from 2 to 12. We had couscous again for lunch, and for dinner many people ate sheep. One part of the celebration is the sacrifice of a sheep. When a new baby is born, the oldest male will kill the sheep as everyone watches and say the name of ... read more

The last two days have been busy as ever. We went to the old medina in Rabat to look around and shopped at the souk, or market. It is HUGE and has millions of different kinds of things ranging from leather shoes, to cow hooves, to hookahs. Mostly you have to barter, but prices are very good! We also went on a small boat ride around Sale, and talked about ways to volunteer, so I will hopefully get to do some cool charity work with women's rights and the environment. We also may have opportunities to teach english to children. When I got home to my house my sister and I hung out for a little while which was awesome, I am so much less shy now and my family is so sweet. My sister was ... read more

Today I moved in with my homestay family. They are SO nice and welcoming. I am living with a mother, father, and their two children. The oldest is a girl my age and she is very sweet and helpful, and she speaks excellent english. The younger brother I haven't met yet. My host parents speak both Arabic and French so I will be able to practice both. The house is absolutely beautiful, everything has amazing Moroccan designs and it is such a relaxed and comfortable setting. I was really nervous moving in but it is definitely not scarey and I live very close to my program director, who is actually family friends with my homestay family. The town I live in is called Temara and is right next to Rabat, but not within walking distance of ... read more
