Today I’ve booked a tour to the Roman ruins of Volubilis which are somewhere around 50 kms west of Fes, and then on to the city of Meknes. First stop is the very pretty mountainside village of Moulay Idris, which overlooks Volubilis. Its major claim to fame is as the site of the tomb of Idris I, who was a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, and co-founded Fes along with his son Idris II. The tomb is of course off limits to “infidels”, but no problem there I’m told by an enthusiastic looking local who thinks he can smell money. “Just follow me my friend“ he says, and the message seems to be that he can get me to a viewing point overlooking the tomb site. I assume this is just a few steps away, ... read more

Endurance pierces marble ~ Moroccan Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling northwest from Moulay Idriss to Volubilis. We emerged from the steep narrow lanes of Moulay Idriss around 9:30am, piled our packs into a waiting taxi and made our way towards the archaeological site of Volubilis, a mere 10 minute drive from the intriguing hillside village we loved so much. Once a distant outpost of the Roman Empire, Volubilis is located in the middle of an agricultural plain, and we soon discovered we were at the mercy of strong winds that amassed incredible force as they made their way across the flatlands of the Fertassa and Khoumane valleys. There were times I could barely stand, which made it difficult to hold a steady camera for photos. I couldn’t help but question Rome’s logic as we ... read more

Tetula ma uz pozna, prezradza mi nazov tohto fajn jedla. V parku oproti mcdonaldu si jedlo v klude vychutnavam ale iba do prichodu nadhanaca, ktory ma laka do volubilis vlastnym taxikom, to odmietam. Zdialky ... read more

We started the day with the standard breakfast of bread and jam before meandering our way through the medina, finding shade where possible as it was once again a spectacularly hot day without a cloud in the sky. The url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293735-d3567270-Reviews-El_Hedim_Square-Meknes_Meknes_Tafilalet_Region.htmlPlace el Hedim is a large square that marks the entrance to the souq. It is bordered by shops selling the usual Moroccan fare of carpets, tagines and jewellery and made a nice spot for a morning coffee as we watched the world go by. We were visited several times by stray cats hanging around looking for food scraps and several more times by some local youths looking for the same thing. The Souq in Meknes is made up of narrow cobblestone and dirt streets that struggle to hold the flow of humanity that rely on it ... read more
