Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Early morning hike from the gite back down to Imlil was invigorating and we encountered a Berber shepherd and his herd of goats. It was back on the road again, driving through Marrakech to reach the seaside town of Essaouira. Along the way there were many argan aka goat trees, a thorny tree whose nut is much valued for everything from dip for homemade bread, protection for skin and acne treament. The argan tree only grows in Morocco and Mexico and due to over exploitation argan forests here are slowing receding. Hopefully with the UNESCO designation of world biosphere reserve, the [View Full Entry]

It all started with Lorena and I thinking about the second part of our trip to Istanbul in May last year. Add some exotic but close destination to Spain, a cheap low cost airline flying there and... Morocco 1-week trip planned in no time! First stop: Marrakech. Marrakech is quite a popular destination among Spaniards, quite many of our friends had previously been there. But none of them could explain what we were about to witness: Cultural shock, vibrant life and chaos all over the place. The moment we arrived to Djma El Fnaa square we started to understand that was [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone! We have spent the last week travelling around Morocco and Spain. We took an overnight ferry from Malaga to Melilla (a Spanish enclave in Morocco). After spending a night there we headed down south into Morocco. The culture shock just walking through the border was amazing from the dirt roads to the traditional Muslim clothing. We took a train from a random deserted town to Casablanca, the train took 10hrs it was painfully slow. Luckily we arrived alte at night and could get a really cheap hotel. Casablanca certainly wasnt a city to rave about. It was big and [View Full Entry]

We flew from Cairo to Marakech, our last stop. We stayed at the Beautiful Sofitel Hotel. We visited the Medina (old Town) and the Souk (Shopping area). The Spice Girls loved the shopping! We had a Farewell Party with costumes of places we had visited. Moroccan music with a Belly Dancer followed. She really cashed in! We headed back to Washington on 4/14 after having traveled 30,074 around the world in 23 days and landed back home in DC at 2:27pm. [View Full Entry]

Our fourth day in Morocco starts at 5:45 with our alarm sounding sharply. We drag ourselves out of bed and in to the cool Saharan morning air in order to find a good spot to watch the sunrise. On a decent size dune we make it just in time to see the sun break the horizon and send the desert through a cascade of colours. Erg Chigaga really is at its best at this time of day. The overnight breeze has swept away any footprints from the day before and it feels like we’re the only people for a thousand miles… [View Full Entry]

Well, we're back in Marrakech and getting ready to leave for Amsterdam early in the morning. Essaouira was an excellent place to spend a few days realxing. Yesterday we rode camels on the beach, played in a playground, built sand castleas and walked into town. For lunch we picked out fish, shrimp and calamari and they grilled it up at the fish stall in the port. Perfect. We topped it off with ice cream in the big square. Back to the pool and the turtles for the afternoon and another nice dinner in the hotel restaurant. This morning was a leisurely [View Full Entry]

We're at the beach! The bus ride yesterday was 2.5 hours and very uneventful, yeah. When we got off the bus there were no taxis so we hired a guy and his wagon to take the luggage and the kids to the hotel. These kids are ready for any mode of transportation. The riad/hotel is beautiful. The best so far. We have a great big room, the pool is warm....ish and it's quiet. Last night we settled in and went for a long walk on the beach. There was a cool little playground so the kids got to burn a little [View Full Entry]

We got sick of waiting for the visas- Mauritania was most difficult and we left the passports in Rabat while we headed on to Volubilis which is a Roman city inhabited for several hundred years and almost the furtherest from Rome. Some of us went to Casablanca for the day from Rabat and its magnificant King Hassas 11 MosqueThings were getting bloody freezing and only got worse bush camping in the desert and then on to Fez another big city. It was time for the High Atlas and going through the highest pass of 2241 metres it was very very cold [View Full Entry]

We're in Marrakech sitting our room listening to a crazy thunder storm. Lucky to be inside and not wandering around the medina! On Wedensday we got up early and took the long long train ride to Marrakech. It was 7.5 hours but what a great way to travel. The kids could move around, look out the windows and play with their toys. A movie break gave us a short window of happy silence. I think our fellow compartment mates appreciated it. We arrived at the most fantastic trainstation I have ever seen. It must be pretty new but was a great [View Full Entry]
