Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Marrakech. Our first impression of the legendary hospitality of the Moroccan people came within ten minuets of arriving in the Souk s, Just in front of the biggest mosque in Marrakech inside the Medina walls of the old town. We stood clandestinely trying to avoid the gaze of would be muggers and con artist of whom we’d been warned of previously, and whom I’d become increasingly paranoid of since the knife point ambush in Marseille and the pink panthers appearance in Barcelona were my €100 were the object of desire. So there we were, the three of us [View Full Entry]

I love Essouira! This was our first real chance in 2 weeks to see the coastline and soak up the gorgeous sun. When we arrived in Essouira our tour guide took us for a quick walk to get to know the basic layout of the village. I can not describe to you how difficult it was to walk past sooooooo many interesting shops and not go inside. I felt like a bubble waiting to burst! Every street is lined with shop after shop and food after food. I was overcome with excitement at the thought of spending money....... and boy! I [View Full Entry]

Well, my journey home wasn't without incident, so perhaps I will recount these misadventures before concluding my Morocco journal. I showed up at the Marrakech Airport on Tuesday, September 30, at 0550 for my return flight home at 0750. Problem was, the flight was from Casablanca, not Marakech! Who booked this itinerary anyhow? I took the next flight to Casa at 1110, as the airport staff said I was too late for the 0630 flight. Upon arrival a scant 35 minutes later, I checked into the expensive Atlas Airport Hotel, so there would be no difficulties making check in the next [View Full Entry]

There are some places that one has such a clear picture of that it feels as though one has already been. In my mind, Marrakech was one of those places. I knew what it would look like; I knew what it would sound like; I knew what it would smell like. I could not have been more wrong. I had a very romantic notion of it. My guidebook describes it as having the pros of cons of both Africa and the Middle East. In my limited experience of both of those places, I have to agree. My trip did not start [View Full Entry]

My journey ends today, as I fly home to Canada tomorrow. I had an inclination to put in for another week or a month off from work! But don't worry Diane, I won't do that! It would have been nice though, to have gone to the coast with my new Slovenian pals, Oliver and Rudi, just to relax and chill out. The computer connection speed is too slow here, the keyboard too difficult to operate, and just not a lot of fun spending my time like this. I'll complete the entry when I get home. Next time I travel abroad, I'll [View Full Entry]

Hi! I'm on holiday with Hannah again in Essaouira, Morocco! This place is really serene compared with the frenzied atmosphere of Marrakech. I'm having a lotta fun eating amazing seafood tagines and sitting in quaint little cafes playing Chinese card games. The camels here are adorable! Hannah took me on a lovely camel ride on the beach, across sand dunes, ending with a few splashes in the sea. The sand dunes are actually surprising steep and it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride! It didn't really help when Hannah started singing and dancing to the soundtrack of Les Mis... Anyway, [View Full Entry]

17 Sep - arrive in Marrakech. Sightseeing with the group includes: Bahia Palace...built by Bou Ahmed in the 1890's with paved courtyards, pavilions and reception halls decorated in traditional Morrocan zelije tiling on the walls and carved cedar wood doors which housed Ahmed's 4 wives and 24 concubines, what a guy!!! Saadian tombs...opulent mausoleums of the Saadians who ruled Morroco from 1549-1668. Ancient walled garden with mosaic graves and pavilions with tombs. Majorelle Gardens...formerly owned by Yves St Laurent, there is now a memorial to him within these beautiful gardens. V tranqu [View Full Entry]

15 Sep - early morning stroll at 7.30am to walk back down the mountain to Imlil. Drive along more bendy roads as we leave the Atlas Mountains behind. Drive through the outskirts of Marrakech heading to the seaside town of Essaouira. We stop at an Argen oil factory. This is a women's co-operative and they explain how argen oil is extracted from the nuts of the argen tree to become either cooking oil (which helps reduce cholesterol) or beauty treatments (rich in Vitamin E). It takes 30kg of nuts to make 1litre of oil! Disappointed not to see the legendary goats [View Full Entry]

Morocco I've never been to Africa or a muslim nation, and with Morocco I wouldn't be able to say that any longer. It's the same for Maria, otherwise known as Fatima from here on and I will be her Mohamed. Marrakech Arriving at the airport, the architecture, women's dress, and writing - my first impressions - give no doubt of arriving in a non-western country. In regards to arabic, it's nifty to watch an arab read right to left, then moments later read french left to right. Moroccans do this naturally and often with English, Spanish, and their native Berber [View Full Entry]

When we first decided to come to Morocco I was doing very brief research online and read a short paragraph about Essaouira and was instantly enticed. Now we are here and we are in love. We arrived Tuesday morning and immediately found a penthouse flat near the bus station and outside of the medina. We negotiated a good rate and we think we got quite a deal for a full apartment with a kitchen and private bathroom for the grand total of 120 dollars for the entire week. That day we slept and slept. We laid down for a nap and [View Full Entry]
