Background: Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1896, but regained its independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule. In 1997, in the second presidential race, Didier RATSIRAKA, the leader during the 1970s and 1980s, was returned to the presidency. The 2001 presidential election was contested between the followers of Didier RATSIRAKA and Marc RAVALOMANANA, nearly causing secession of half of the country. In April 2002, the High Constitutional Court announced RAVALOMANANA the winner.

aids speech
Just as I had finished giving a speech on the impact of aids on women in our village, the mayor got up and vehemently denied that we would ever have aids there.
Heading Getting ready and already dealing with fotoana gasy (Malagasy time) Now that our trip is officially one month away, Jessica, Wendy and I are trying to book our plane tickets to Diego- so we either pay 50 dollars on top of the tourist price to get them sent to the US, or we very kindly ask Wendy to get the peace corps travel agent to book them for us and hope that the dollar becomes stronger in the next 2 weeks. I think we are doing the latter. [View Full Entry]

Well, I think the pics say it all. I had four nights and four days of heaven. Pure luxury. Nothing like I've ever experienced or likely to experience again. A highlight was a boat trip along the coast we did....we saw several very rare Malagasy fish eagles...one flew just a couple of meters over our heads with a shiny new fish in its talons. We also saw a Peregrine falcon. The lemurs would just come by my villa everyday. It was insane. On the first afternoon I was lying in my hammock reading and felt as though I were being watched. Hello All! This entry is from my last vacation to Mahajanga and Marovoay. I thought I would post some pictures for you all to enjoy. I don't know if any of you have my return marked on your calendar, but if you do you know that I am almost in the countdown. Once 2008 rolls around I just have six months left. That's right, I have completed 75% of my service here. My time here has been wonderful and I wouldn't trade it for anything but a taste of home would be nice. Just a taste though. Nothing too exciting happened [View Full Entry]

Well, when I was in the middle of my last tour of Kenya/Tanzania, I wrote a very long second entry and then the internet died in the cafe I was in, so I lost it. So...here I am in Madagascar! I just finished my tour and it was amazing. What a truly beautiful country. A few of the highlights.... The screaming Indris in Andasibe waking me up at 5:50 Having three brown lemurs climbing all over me on Lemur Island (and digging their nails into my neck) Learning how to pronounce Antananarivo, Fianarantsoa, Analamanzoatra and Andrianampoinimerina Meeting Dr. Patricia Wright, of [View Full Entry]

At last back in Europe... Although not without casualties!!!! We arrived Wednesday afternoon and Thursday I spent all day going from one hospital to another trying to find out if I had no Malaria!! Well, in the evening when I arrived in the 2nd hospital, just after seeing my GP, I realized I got covered with tons of boils in only 1/2 hour...and my temperature had risen to 39.5°!!! So they kept me in the emergencies, looking for all the possible tropical diseases: Malaria, Dengue fever, Cholera, Pest, etc... I did not have any of these, but I picked up some [View Full Entry]

Sat 29th Sep - Got up early to say goodbye to the guys I had been travelling with for the past 2 weeks as they are travelling off to other places. This bit is always a bit sad as, although you promise to stay in touch, the practicalities make it difficult. When I get to oz in the future I can catch up again, but that is a long time away. Leaving for Madagascar later today, so time to catch up this morning. The couple who run the Twana lodge, Arnie & Chris are really nice folks and would love to [View Full Entry]
