Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Sad to be leaving the wonderful camping at Mitsinjo but we decided to leave our tent there and see what we wanted to do after a week at Feon'ny ala. There were preparations underway for another meeting of the research team and some of the members of the association. Because of this, the Feon'ny ala vehicle came to pick us up because the Mitsinjo vehicle was in use for the event. Our room was on the third level, 90 steps up and 90 steps down to the bottom! Great exercise and a wonderful view when you got to our room. We had picked it out because you could see the water from the front porch. Got ourselves settled in and set the last of our clothes from the earlier washing out in the sun on ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085elloe The sun has come out finally after two days and we move our laundry out into the sun in hopes of it drying before we move over to Feon'ny ala. Decided we had enjoyed our two walks here at Mitsinjo and would take another short walk. The prices of these walks are so very reasonable, 25,000 ariary per person for a two to three hour walk! On all of our walks but the night walk with Matthew we were the only ones on the walk. But wait, before we left on our walk, there was a paradise flycatcher right by our tent posing for us. Then a troop of brown lemurs comes to see us including a mother with her baby attached and peeking out at us! So very special right by our ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Our first night walk and we were not sure what to expect. Both of us had our torch/flashlight to enable us to see as we walked along. Robert had suggested bringing a hiking pole since it had been raining off and on the paths would be slick. Was glad for the suggestion before the night was over!It was misting as took off and had turned to a light rain as the walk continued. We got to see one of the smallest of the chameleon's. It looked like a piece of bark when you first saw it and then were told it was a chameleon! We were walking pretty much the same trail as we had on the morning walk. Being night, it was more treacherous since you had to useis your light to see where ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Decided we needed more vegetables and see if indeed there was an ATM and see if the shop we had seen on our first trip really was an internet shop. Made it past the park with no one hassling us to go into the park and continued on our way.You walk out on the road and there is not much of a shoulder in most places so you do listen for the sound of the taxi-brousse to make sure you are not in their way! Seems the drivers come very close to you but maybe just the imagination.Ran into Tahiana, who is a guide and works in the gift shop at Mitsinjo on her way home. Took us the back way into the village. Instead of following the road, you cross the railroad tracks ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Vahimantsina Walk - the four to five hour circuit Loved the Malagasy names for the various walks so had to share them!First a word about the nature walks we went on while here. They were all great and we enjoyed them immensely. That being said, we did not have books to show us the correct spelling of what we were being shown so some of what is written here is what "We heard" when something was told us. Another thing we found out when we were paying bill was that if you are staying at Mitsinjo once you have paid for your first entry into the park you do not have to pay again until you leave and then you must pay each time you enter the reserve. Very nice!!!!For our first trip, we ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Were awakened by the singing of the indri indri in the forest! Is a unique sound and looking forward to our first sighting of them! Fixed ourselves a breakfast of croissant and fruit and decided we would walk to Feon'ny ala and check things out and get out of the way of the busy day. When went to the kitchen to clean up breakfast dishes, food preparation was in full swing, there was a fire going outside and inside so knew we would be in their way. One of the reasons for the meeting was to share the work being done in and around Mitsinjo to hopefully obtain more funding. It was inspiring to hear that during the 2009 troubles in Madagascar when the funding was cut off, they continued to plant seedlings waiting ... read more

Geo: -18.9495, 48.2301Why Mitsinjo? One of the things we have realized works for us in our travels is to go somewhere and stay there instead of moving all over the place. When doing research on Madagascar, Robert mainly, it seemed the area around Andasibe fit what we would enjoy. There were several places to explore, and Mitsinjo besides being a place we could camp also had a awesome environmental philosophy. If google Mitsinjo you will find many projects they have going on. From their website, nature bad tourism, conservation and research. One of their big projects is reforestation of the area clearcut around Andisabe and Madagascar. From their webpage, "Mitsinjo has therefore embraced reforestation and rainforest restoration since our early days of existence. Small rainforest fragments are being linked up by the planting of corridors, which ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Wake up and head down for breakfast before venturing out into the city. One of the attractions of Madagascar Underground was they advertised Mexican food and margaritas. Had the Huevos Rancheros for breakfast and they did not do a bad job at all. Over easy egg are not a universal we have discovered! My only complaint with breakfast is they charge by the cup which is not good for a coffee addict like me! It is made in an expresso machine so quite nice.We had been given directions on where to change money. Just walk 50 meters and climb stairs and walk down the street to the place to change money. The first part was easy but once on the busy street the street vendors were trying to convince you how much you needed ... read more

Geo: -18.9154, 47.52Had a short wait before it was time to load the plane. Not sure if meal is served so share a fried rice dish. When we had checked in they asked if we wanted to change our seats so we were sitting in a two seat section of the aircraft. Very nice, no one stepping over you or you have to step over someone else! The ride was fine and the landing fairly smooth.Disembark from plane and walk into the airport and as we enter the arrivals hall, we are scanned by a lady with a thermometer. Guess checking to see if anyone has a fever. The questionnaire you fill out does ask if you have been sick with a fever or cough. Guess do not want any outbreaks. Stand in long line to ... read more

Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, and this amazing country has no rival when it comes to unique flora and fauna. Situated off the east coast of Africa, the national language Malagasy is spoken exclusively throughout the land, and Madagascar lives up to a billing as the place that time forgot. It's one thing to watch the famous animated movie and marvel over this wonderful place, but I'm delighted to fly in for a week long explore. As time is limited, I decided to base myself in Antananarivo, known as Tana to all, and so began one of the most memorable travel experiences of my life. There are some destinations that live on in the memory, and I loved Madagascar from the moment I arrived. The journal left off in Rodrigues, at the ... read more
