We are waiting for our bus to take us to Tanzania to begin our safari, but the bus is running a little late. So we'll use this time to recap some events from last week. Last Thursday, we got a chance to visit a local school. They put on a spontaneous program for us which mainly consisted of the kids singing for us. We presented them with some gifts: soccer balls, a football, and a baseball and bat. WE also gave them some pencils and other school supplies. After that, some of the group mixed in with the older students to play a quick soccer game. It was a great time. Then we got to tour the school and some of the classrooms. On Sunday, we attended Celestine's church, which was mainly a roof and benches, ... read more

Last week I was in Nairobi for a Technology conference. It was pretty uneventful but nice to be able to catch up with a lot of other volunteers. This week I'm back at site busy writing funding proposals. I have a temporary roommate which is nice because I was beginning to get a little lonely living by myself. She'll only be here for nine weeks and most of that time I'll be traveling so the arrangement worked out well for both of us. Tommorrow a few other volunteers are coming to visit and we are all going out dancing. Saturday we are going to Nairobi for the 4th of July party but on by the embassy. It should be a lot of fun. They have a soccer tournament too and I think we are going to ... read more

Well tommorrow will be my first Thankgiving in Kenya and I'll be spending it at dinner with the ambassador, his family and a few other volunteers. I've never been so excited for a turkey dinner in my life. The last few weeks have been pretty tough with the problems I had with my site visit and then finding another site which I finally get to see on Friday. It sounds pretty cool but so did the other one so I'll let you know how things turn out. On Sunday a bunch of us have hired a car to take us to Lake Nakuru. There's a big park there with rhinos and flamingos that is supposed to be really cool. ... read more

Well climbing the mountain was a lot of fun. It took us about an hour to climb up it and another two hours to walk around the crater and another 45 minutes to get back down. It is actually a volcanic crater that has been dorment for some time but it was cool because you could see the the steam rising from certain parts. Our Halloween party at the center was a lot of fun. It was nice to stay there overnight and be able to use "real" bathrooms. I am covered with bug bites though I think from planning manhunt. This Friday we find out where our sites will be and I'm pretty excited to be almost done with training. Nov 9th I finally found out what my placement will be I'll be doing microfinance ... read more

So far training has not been that interesting. I really like the family I'm staying with and trying hard to adjust to no running water and no electricity. Nights are the hardest. Yesterday I found a giant spider in my room as I was writing a letter home and every once in awhile I find a cockroach in my bed. So far it's pretty hard to tell what I'm going to think about the next two years. Training is so much like being in school again that it's not much fun at all. It also been frustrating that communication with anyone back home is so hard. So far we have already lost one person. She was older and I guess just too set in her ways to adjust to the change. A bunch of us plan ... read more

Now that we're back in Nairobi, it doesn't seem as daunting the second time. Except that when we got off the bus, Mike almost let himself get pissed off at a relentless, harassing taxi driver. My approach now? Say nothing and just look at them. Or turn and respond with, "Blah, blah, blah!" Not worth my energy anymore to get baited into a fight. Leaving Arusha was tough but tougher still because I caught a cold which became full-blown by the time the bus ride was over. There was a memorable highlight at the border stop: I became most interesting, as my hair got the full attention of a young Maasai guy who spent a good amount of time touching it and examining how it works. I love Maasai areas. The people are so interested in ... read more

We awoke at the very civilized hour of 9am and we rented two bikes. They wanted 500 KSh for mountain bikes so of course instead we rented the 1-speed pieces of shit for 250. I was begging for more speeds on that hilly road until it ended and we hit pure sand. We carefully made our way through the herds of cattle and a lot more sand to the Crater Lake Reserve. The way wasn't so clear, as we were standing in 2 feet of sand surrounded by cows, so we asked directions. The Masaai tribesman herding the beasts was the only guy around, so Mike tapped him on the shoulder. When he turned around, we were both a little startled at the size of the spear he was sporting. But he was very friendly and ... read more

Matatu = white minivan fitted with fourteen seats to accommodate thirty-five Africans + their babies, baskets, chickens and fish. After deciding it didn't feel right to trek Mt. Kenya in Nanyuki, we took the big bus to Nairobi! Big, notorious city. We made it very quickly to the nearby guesthouse, matatus everywhere! Everyone told us it's dangerous but it's clear now how really lawless it is. Police can be quite corrupt and don't work at all on Sunday(!) No respectable Kenyan is on the street then. After many warnings from the staff and horror stories of being mugged from other guests, we clenched our teeth to venture out for beer and Indian food. Turns out EVERYTHING'S closed on the weekends and we may have to stay til Monday - get me out! Bright side - we ... read more

The smells of East Africa: something burning (usually charcoal or frankencense), bad exhaust and dust and body odors of many types. One day on the Kenyan side of Moyale (no beer but better food) and then 9 hours on a gut-churning, bone-crunching ride in a cattle truck over corrugated "road" through the North Kenyan desert. There was a lot of red dirt and rocks, sand with low brush, a few trees, a stop for lunch and talk of "shiftas" (bandits!) But the police wouldn't escort the truck convoy so off we went. Two trucks got flat tires and we stopped for each one - ugh! My pants were so bunched up that I didn't think I'd ever see my underwear again. We were like Mexican jumping beans in the truck cab. Just when I thought my ... read more

This morning we headed out for a quick safari, going to be the last of the trip. The days just disappeared so quickly. We continued to keep an eye out for the reclusive rhinocerous still missing from the big five list but had to do with some antelopes and waterbuck instead. When we returned to the camp we packed our gear into the cars and prepared for the drive back to Nairobi. At this point a lot of the people wanted a group photo taken and we lined up like a school photograph while people dashed to the cars to collect their cameras. As we kept standing there our guide taking one picture after the other in the stark sunshine I suddenly started to feel a bit dizzy. The next thing I know I wake up ... read more
