Greetings all! Time is flying by, yet I have no concept of time. Everyday is much the same here. Some days warmer or cooler, more sun or clouds, rain or not - but generally the same. Seasons are only marked by rain or not, and even those seasons are not reliable. Then, there is the time in a day. Even though I know that Africa time, especially in the rural areas, rules the day, I can’t help but hope each day that we will actually get to a place at the scheduled time (or at least within one hour!), or that I will accomplish all that I would like to. Lately, I have displayed some frustration and crankiness, but am really trying to be patient. In addition to several local support groups (self-help groups with income-generating ... read more

Greetings to all! First, let me assure anyone not hearing from me past two weeks and worried. All is well, just no email access. Cell phone email service has been out do to some upgrade that obviously has not gone well. So, in Kisii briefly today. Mr. Odoyo had bank business, but will be arriving shortly to collect me - so must rush again. And, apologies, no time today for individual email responses. Dago is a very friendly, beautiful, peaceful place with many industrious, welcoming people. Even the area chief has announced that I am welcome, and am free to travel safely throughout. Now, a chief in this society is not what you might picture. These days, is a civil servant with a traditional title. Is well educated, experienced in local politics and community. Wears business ... read more

Hi all! In Kisii today with Christine (16) and Susan (13) from the Odoyo family. This is Susan's first trip to Kisii, and really enjoying it, except for the moment, because they have been sitting here with me for almost 2 hours while I do internet, catch up with tons of email - and slow computers. First let me tell you that villages here are very safe. Still uncertainty on some roads, and some places are very bad still, but not around here. Here, getting back to normal, but schools have still not started (school year begins after the new year here), and business is still down. This area has got to be one of the most beautiful in Kenya. Higher elevation, cooler, and lush tropical green growth over the highland dotted landscape. Very fertile soil ... read more

A big THANK YOU is in order!!! And a small celebration for the success of my little endeavor to help a handful of homeless children here in Kenya. Unfortunately, the grave issues of poverty, the AIDS crisis and a shortage of food supply have left many children here without parents or without a home that can support them and in this vast country children can easily go unaccounted for. There is much work being done to help these youth but it is a constant struggle for all who have given themselves fully to this work. It is surprising how far a little help from just a handful of people can go. But what surprised me most, (although I really shouldn’t be so shocked as I know that all of you are amazing people!!) was the ... read more

This is for the Children..... I arrived in Kisii Town after a relaxing week in Naivasha tired, hungry, desperate for a pee and a bath only to have another hours drive back towards Naivasha and out into the bush along bumpy unpaved roads. But the ever rolling hills of the Kisii Highlands are breath taking and the views as you drive are able to ease your mind away from any irritations. As I gazed out the window, fillings my lungs with the fresh highland air, I saw a bit of Jamaica. In this new place that would serve as my home for the next four weeks I found a bit of the beauty of home and I half expected to see Bromley at the top of the next hill, just round the corner... dogs, family ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm in Rongo now. We drove from Nairobi on Wed. We're making a quick trip to Kisii today to do some banking, so we were able to come online. (It's about a half hour from Rongo.) Rongo doesn't have internet, most of it doesn't even have electricity. I'm having a good time here. It's very different. I don't have a lot of time to write, so I'll write in the details later. Hosea's family is very nice. We're now staying there. The day before yesterday I went with Agnes to her home in Awendo. Her family is also very very nice. The roads to get there were awful though and there were a couple times I thought the car would get stuck. It's been raining a lot, so everything is extremely muddy. At Agnes' ... read more
