Coconut Tess

I am off on a year trip traveling around the world to around 20 cities visiting friends and family, old ones and ones I\'ve never met, meeting a variety of people and places and adventures, taking advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to me to learn something new about the world and myself.

(Just revisiting my old blog and realized that I had never published this chapter!! I had found the old photos and uploaded them and thought I would just publish it as it is here and done.... most of the memories are captured in the photo stories although I have to admit that this was a week spent doing a whole lot of nothing and just relaxing really.... not really part of my trip so to speak, but rather a vacation from my trip. Sweet none the less!) Well everybody, what can I say? I have been keeping you all in the dark! for a very long time as well. And it is not for lack of photos, or places or people. Its been for a lack of toes. Yes, I said toes. Why toes you ask? ... read more

I do hope you enjoy all these photos that log my journey from Delhi to Jaipur, out to Pushkar and onto Agra then to arrive back in Delhi to chill. It was a long long week with many hours spent on a rickety local bus squashed up against people Id rather not be squashed up against, but seeing as I almost got murdered when I tried to ride the train, or at least seriously screwed by some fake porter trying to rip me off and then most likely the officials for not having a proper ticket, before getting blessedly saved by a sweet young man who firstly declared himself to be a med student so that I would listen to him and not any of the other people who were hassling me, well the bus wasnt ... read more

30 July, 2007 - On the bus from Jaipur to Agra There is a boy, young and strong, red band of cloth wrapped round his head like a samurai. And like a samurai he shouts the snack he sells with eyes smiling strong as a man but only seriousness from his lips. It smells good here, at this rest stop, the stench of urine masked by the lemon and spice of this young boys living. He is the same to me as the flock of parakeets swinging in the cornfields a while back. We are all the same, smelling of urine or lemon spice. We all have beating hearts, we all a striving to live. * * * How can I convey to you my Indian experience? We have all been desensitized by the multitude of ... read more

Sweatin'Stlye in Hong Kong My first time to Asia, and boy I chose the wrong time of year. Fifteen hours by plane with a hussle cross Joberg airport left my heart behind in Cape Town along with my sobriety and journal. The sun rose somewhere over the Indian Ocean and brought me to Hong Kong through clouds mirroring the islands below as they spotted my descent. Everything here is new, nothing is familiar. New faces, new languages, new culture and religion, new foliage, new buildings, new terrain. New heat. The hummidity is oppressive. I optomistically opted to walk from the MTR (tube) station to the building where I would meet my Hong Kong host, only a few blocks away, rather than pay the HK15$ taxi fee, I like to see the city when I first arrive... ... read more

You all knew it was going to happen. There was nothing you could do to stop it, and Cape Town obviously wants me too... its in the stars, written in the depths of the earth and ocean down here... the rhythm of Cape Town is calling me and saying.... "Tessa, its time to.... PARTY! So that is what I did as I enjoyed the beautiful joys Cape Town has to offer, and they are many and they come in a variety of forms, like men for example, and fresh fish and yummy cocktails and sunsets and beaches. Anyways, the stories are in the photos mostly and the photos are stuck on a computer in Cape Town and I am waiting for copies on CD in Australia....... read more

Hello everyone! I know I know and I am very very sorry!! It has been a long hot month in Asia and I have spent the last week and a half just resting and relaxing in Sydney and I havent told you guys anything when there is soooooo much to say and show you! First off, I left my photos behind in Cape Town due to a little mistake I made in the am/pm departure time department which led to a very hungover.... well, drunk actually, rush to pack and make an early plane. And what can I say, a blog entry just isnt a blog entry without the photographs! These ones I have managed to get up arent the half of them and I will hopefully get an entry in the end with all my ... read more

Oh boy! Would you look at the time? Well I sure as hell haven’t, and I threw out my watch a long time ago (well actually just put it away till I have to bring it out again so that I don’t miss another flight….) A long time has passed and I am still here in Kenya! Living the sweet life, I must add, as it is not ever day I get to walk with giraffe and wildebeest, impala zebra and waterbuck, but it is every day here! I left the densely populated Kisii highlands and, as beautiful as they were, sighed a breath of relief as I boarded my last matatu (minibus filled to the rim with big mammas, kids and chickens) to head back towards the Rift Valley and the splendor of farm life ... read more

A big THANK YOU is in order!!! And a small celebration for the success of my little endeavor to help a handful of homeless children here in Kenya. Unfortunately, the grave issues of poverty, the AIDS crisis and a shortage of food supply have left many children here without parents or without a home that can support them and in this vast country children can easily go unaccounted for. There is much work being done to help these youth but it is a constant struggle for all who have given themselves fully to this work. It is surprising how far a little help from just a handful of people can go. But what surprised me most, (although I really shouldn’t be so shocked as I know that all of you are amazing people!!) was the ... read more

This is for the Children..... I arrived in Kisii Town after a relaxing week in Naivasha tired, hungry, desperate for a pee and a bath only to have another hours drive back towards Naivasha and out into the bush along bumpy unpaved roads. But the ever rolling hills of the Kisii Highlands are breath taking and the views as you drive are able to ease your mind away from any irritations. As I gazed out the window, fillings my lungs with the fresh highland air, I saw a bit of Jamaica. In this new place that would serve as my home for the next four weeks I found a bit of the beauty of home and I half expected to see Bromley at the top of the next hill, just round the corner... dogs, family ... read more

Yes... this is where I rested up after my long flight over... what a bit of bliss!I have arrived finally in Africa. I have been here in Kenya for two weeks now and so much has happened... but unlike the Western world where the internet is at your fingertips and super speedy as well, it has been quite difficult to get to you all! Even now I have been trying to get going for over two hours after it took me two hours to get to the inernet cafe in the first place! So unfortunately I am not in the poetic mood that I wanted to be when I wrote this first entry from Africa. I also am working on another project (since I am now at the childrens home and it is actually 9.5.07) ... read more
