I arrived in Accra on Sunday and have spend the last few days doing an orrientation here with other volunteers. The heat is incredible and will take some getting used but when I think of the gray miserables days and rain at home I think somehow I will manage! The people here are so friendly and eager to help in any way and I've learnt my African name (Ekwea) because I was born on a Wednesday. The markets are amazing and so busy. People in every direction continally want your attention and to shake your hand. There are children sleeping under tables and strapped to their mothers backs. I had an African drumming and dancing lesson on Tuesday. We learned the Fume Fume but somehow don't think we were going to win any prizes for our ... read more

I'm sore today. Yesterday I spent 5 hours up at Amasaman - the Orphanage site, and I learned how to mix sand and cement, make bricks, and carry them. I carried over 15, which doesn't sound like a lot but theyre VERY heavy. They hired 4 workers, who worked their butts off friday evening for 6 hours without barely breaks and yesterday we finished off the bricks, We only got there around 1 because we made lunch and had to take tro tro up there, which takes about a 1/2 hour 45 min. depending on how much they stop to pick up and drop people off. But the workers had started around 7:30 AM had no more than 1/2 break when we came with lunch then worked until 6:30 PM. Its amaising how hard they can ... read more

I've finally arrived in Accra, the capital of Ghana. We arrived on Monday night, just as the sun was beginning to set. It's pretty hot, but extremely humid--and it's supposed to be the dry season! It's the kind of humid where you're always sticky, and the kind of hot where you just have to somehow become accustomed to the putrid smell coming from your armpits. Other than that, I'm having a really great time, so far. Accra is a busy city, full of people, and life! The sights, the smells, the sounds--every step is a new experience. We've had a wonderful man named Ofori take us around Accra to get us familiar with the Ghanaian way of life. The marketplace is a hectic but exciting place. Everywhere people are selling all sorts of things and of ... read more

we got back from boti falls yesterday, i hiked for 3hrs in the rainforrest, it was the best experience yet. at the highest point there was this huge rock on a cliff and the only way to get on to it was by a bamboo ladder. i conquered my fear of heights and went for it accompanied by stacy. I was on top of the world with only mountains of rainforrest for miles. uninterrupted landscape. its really unexplainable, it was beautiful. the german student that came barely speaks english, but know enough to get by, so stacy and i get to listen as conny translates. its great! i already know ich bein laura, and a few other german phrases that I don't want to type cuz this key board sucks, and i'll probably slaughter the german ... read more

As of tomorrow we're getting 2 more students. One is only staying with us for a night and the other will stay for a few nights then leave to stay with a friend for a couple days then stay for good. We will cram yet another into our already confined space. buts its really becoming the more the merrier. They're also both from Germany. So we will be in pairs 2 Americans and 2 Germans well it will be 3 to start off but only for a night. Conny's excited to have someone to speak german with, but actually its surprising most of the obrounis we see around here are German, Connys been able to make conversation left in right. It was more prevelent in Cape Coast though. I've recooperated just fine after my bad food ... read more

yesterday night we got back from Cape coast, its even more beautiful than Accra. Its less congested, smaller city. The people are a little more pushy though. For my first meal I ordered a chicken sandwich, I was kind of worried about it when it came but I was starving and I wasn't going to change, after all I hadn't any problems with any of the food that was prepared for me at home. We stayed in a little hut RIGHT on the beach, I have plenty of pictures but you won't get to see them until I come home ;-( sorry, I downloaded more of the ones I got onto cd though on the Kodak site. So anyways, on saturday morning the day we went to see Elimna castle which we could see from our ... read more

Hey! I'm sorry I probably won't be able to get many more pictures up until maybe next week, depending on how the electricity is working. Its been difficult finding an Internet cafe in working order when we want it and the electricity gets cut off every 2 days for 6 hours to conserve the water from Akosombo dam. And i may not be able to write as much as I want to because so much has been happening and the internet connection is so slow and unpredictable. But here goes. . . .We have another traveler! Stacy from ALASKA! she's 24 and brought her guitar so we're playing even more music and we've managed to cram ourselves into our little room finally tonight. She arrived sunday night, and as of tomorrow Conny and Stacy are going ... read more
