Takoradi people
People watching I'm still hanging around Takoradi, being completely and utterly lazy. Perhaps the meaning of life truly is having sand under your feet and giant fruit-based alcoholic drinks with funny straws? Tis a shame my sanctuary of sin shall be smashed into smithereens soon. (wow that is a lot of s-words). I have to head back out tomorrow and work to make gigantic corporations more bundles of cash that they do not need. How disappointing. However, all shall not be lost under the white warm sands, as I do believe soon I will be heading to Tema or Cape Coast!
The days here have been long and demanding on my sandal clad feet. Trekking around various beaches, dancing with strangers and seeing the many sites of the local area are just some of the activities I've crammed into the few days. I have been lucky in that the rainy season has not been too rainy during my mini vacation as well.
Most of my time was spent on the beaches and the surrounding bars talking to various locals. I even met a couple of backpackers from New Zealand which was nice! After regaling each other with many travel stories, they

A bit of the eatery/bar at the beach were perplexed as to why I always seem to do things on my own. "It must be so lonely or boring" they say. Given my years of traveling all by myself I've never had a bad time (excluding incidents in Louisianna and Poland, but that's another story). I always meet crazy people from around the world wherever I go, and if I feel like traveling with a pick up group, it is no problem! If I feel like going my own way and planning things by myself, well that is awesome too! Having nobody to worry about but oneself is a wonderful feeling. Plus I love that feeling of being alive and free. Though if someday I meet that special someone to go to far off places with, I'm sure the trips will be fantastic too 😊
Ok, enough of the rant there. Back to me having a good time at the bars. The drinks are fairly cheap but the beer is so-so. I just stick to my usual poison of rum and cokes and fruity cocktails. The food is very tasty and a heck of a lot better than the stuff on board the ship I work on.

Tasty drinks served here! The fruit is incredible, pretty much plucked straight from the trees and served immediately. I'm a big fan of fresh fruit you see, and having pineapple that good was an almost orgasmic experience. Mmmmm. I wonder if I can smuggle some on my ship.
I explored a bit more of Takoradi yesterday, mainly doing the *tourist* thing. I actually didn't buy much that wasn't edible, but did find an off beat shop selling gold, gems and even ivory. I didn't purchase anything, but some of the carved ivory was quite amazing in detail. I didn't ask how it was gotten though. While walking about I generally did my own thing and enjoyed people watching. The roads are filled with crazy drivers, but it was much more navigable than Lagos Nigeria, which was a nightmare of vehicles. My cab driver spoke some french, so we exchanged various interesting swearwords that might prove useful in the world. Man has my french skills diminished alot since the olden days of high school.
Even though I've spent such a small amount of time, I can definitely see myself coming back for a good proper backpacking trip. Having to work soon tends to

Where I had some of the best fruit ever damper the more exploring side of me, otherwise by now I'd probably be lost in the rain forest trying to find elephants. I'm loving this part of Ghana, but I like any beach environment. One complaint is that it tends to be too hot, but I'm just not used to all this warm weather. Actually I should be saying that I do not mind the warmth, it is just I hate the humidity and being sweaty. I kinda miss being buried in snow back home. There is probably some hostels in the area, but the hotel I'm at nicely priced. My biggest savings account slasher is all the booze really, but that is my own fault. Seriously I need to cut back.
I think I'm the only metalhead in the entire country. One of the cool bartenders was playing some great local music with a good grove and asked if I wanted to give them any cds to spin while I was there, preferably anything people can dance to. I kinda doubt my collection of Scandinavian death metal would be appropriate here.
I did manage to head out snorkeling for an hour or so which made me really
happy. A local beach dweller lent me some gear and we dove just right off the beach. I love the water, though there wasn't much to see were I was playing about. He said the good sites are not around here but we would have to drive. Ah well, maybe next time! This also made me excited about back home when I can head snorkeling a ton back out at my cabin, for once I set foot off the plane in a month or so, it will be perfect weather for it.
Well I'm off. I had good times with all the friendly people there in Takoradi but now I must earn some much needed money. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be back onshore exploring some more wonderful places around West Africa. I'm getting all bouncy just thinking of it right now 😊
