Entrance Way
can you spot the extra refrigerator? my experiance as first time apartment renter has been great. I can have parties whenever I want for however long, but that isn't the first thing on my mind. I just don't like being held down to stupid dorm rules.
My landlady is very nice. She is very accomidating. When my luggage didn't come until a day later she was willing to help me out with whatever I needed. Also, because she thought I wasn't coming until the day rachel was coming she didn't have our apartment ready, but she didn't have totally ready when Rachel got here anyway because a good friend of hers was in the hospital. However, she told me I didn't have to worry about my security deposit fee until she had everything in here.
Our apartment is made up of 7 rooms with a major hallway that connects all of them and acts as an entry way into the flat. We also have a blacony conected to my room and the dining room. The first room you can see upon entering the flat. It is a formal sitting room. The theme colors are red and white. The floor is wood witha red carpet in
Formal Room
There is now a tv in the corner, a shisha in the other corner, insense behind one of the doors, and empty dishes lying everywhere. can you imagine all that? the center. In the right corner is the old television. We finally got the cable the night of Jake's birthday party, but it likes to come and go as it pleases.
The next room is the "dining room". I say this because it is really a bedroom, but since we have no real dining room and no one sleeps in there we put a table next to the window, pushed the bed against the wall as "seating", and called it the dining room. Cats that rome the streets like to come in at night if we leave the porch open and sit on the bed. There are many alley cats here. They are everywhere and are as common as garbage on the side of the road.
The third room you see while walking down the hallway is my room. It is very cluttered of course and noisy at night (the reason of which I will note briefly). It has a full or queen sized bed. I can't really tell being a small person and all. I have a huge dresser, but since I have very little clothing (2 weeks worth) compared to all that I have back home, it isn't
dining room?
we might get another roommate so we might have to move everything back to this state? what do you think it looks like now with 2 more chairs, a table, and a bunch of flowers? terrible. My room is at the hall's corner and it also.
Rachel's room is next to mine. Her's is quieter. She pushed two twin sized bed together to form one big room. She didn't want the other room because of the noise.
We both have spacious rooms and wooden floors with carpets.
Across from Rachel's room is the first bathroom that contains a toilet with boday, sink, and a shower. The thing about this bathroom is you cannot flush the toilet paper down the toilet or it will clog and no divider exists between the shower and the rest of the room. I have never seen this until now. Crazy! Not even an indentation exists on the ground. So we never have to clean the tiled floor because we have a wiper for the floor that pushes all the water to the drain. The first time I took a shower I flooded the bathroom because I didn't know where the drain was and you have to open the drain when you take a shower.
At the end of the hall is another bathroom with only a toilet and the kitchen. The kitchen has:
a gas stove/oven that looks very old
Rachel's room
all i can say is that it definately doesnt look like this anymore ;) and like it would burst into flames at any minute. One burner is always on 5-0 and the other is always on 10-5. The oven is nice though. The first time I used it I was so scared because I didn't know how to light it. I lighted about 5 matches until I found a little hole you drop it in. Everytime it is a little scary because it goes from nothing to roaring in your face. (The roaring goes for the burners too.)
a deep sink with plenty of cutting board space that we use to put drying dishes.
a table we use to hold drinks on and cut/prepare food on.
a refrigerator whose door does not like to remain open everytime we close it. Then Jake lifted it up and pushed the weel under so it wouldn't tilt any longer and now it only opens when we have too many things on the door.
a cute little stool where we rest the computer on so we can listen to music while we cook or clean the dishes (we do both requently).
a washer that is brand spanking new, but there is no dryer so we have to hang
kitchen
i wish it was still this clean. all of our clothes outside so they can get floating dust on them (from the air). or you can hang them on a chair to dry, but a dirty cat will rest its sad detiorating body on it (Rachel learnt this).
And lastly the cabinetry. One resides over the sink where it hold the plates. The other is like a dresser. It holds cups, pots, and pans on top, pretty silver platter and more cups and fruit arm level. Then underneath Rachel and I have our own little shelves, but also one for plastic bags and oher communal food.
All the hot water is heated by the a little heater in the kitchen. There is a little window where you can see the water boiling.
Some things I really like about the apartment are the wooden floors, beautiful carpets and frames on the wall, and the spaciousness. What I don't like is the noise. Since we live on the first floor, right across the street from a mosque, and a builing being constructed, we get to hear all the calls to prayer which is at least 7 times a day, all the congregation of people before and after, friday when
bathroom...toilet only
just a toilet, nothing special. all the men have to go to mosque we hear the entire ceremony, and all the construction because it doesn't stop until late in the afternoon and starts early early early in the morning. It makes it difficult for a girl to get her beauty sleep.
My roommate is awesome. We share almost everything. Like we take turns buying things like milk, salt, sugar, pepper, rice, butter, etc. All the necessary things. We help each other out. Like when we don't bring enough money and the other has enough. The other pays and and the one without enough money pays the other back.

dear heather, welcome to life in the middle east. I do not think you should hide while taking photos, it sounds unfriendly to secretly photograph people. I live in Alex too. So you mind if i follow your journal it seems very intresting. It is full of life and is very different than how i see the city.good luck during your stay
