Not as period as Windsor Palace down the street, but very, very nice. It, too, has the cool old elevators.
Finally, Ahmed was finished his exams and we could go away (for one night only!) for a long-overdue sort-of honeymoon. We booked ourselves a great room at the Cecil Hotel in Alexandria. Yes, we have been to Alexandria before together on a number of occassions, but only for the day. of course! We arrived in Alex around lunchtime on Friday and checked into the hotel. We remembered to bring my passport and the marriage contract; this is the only way that an Egyptian can stay with a person of the opposite sex in a hotel. After getting everything photocopied and dropping of luggage, we were on our way to Montazzah Garden, the ONLY real park/garden area, I think, I all of Egypt. It's beautiful and huge and GREEN. We had a little picnic lunch here, stayed until the sun started to set, then left to do a little shopping (cheap street purses - Christian Dior, yeah, right!). Then it was time to relax.
The next day we got "touristy." I am now able to get into tourist sites for the crazy low Egyptian prices! Not that I mided paying extra being a foreigner, for I fully believe that people in

their own country should have access to their own historical sites, and that means EVERYONE of every class. However, this means that now we can go to places like museums any time we want. We went to the Alexandria National museum. The Greco-Roman museum is STILL closed (was a year ago, too), so this is nearly just around the corner from there. I like this museum made in a villa. Then we headed to the catacombs, but there were like 25 tourist busses there, and I have seen them once before, so we left and went to the citadel. Oddly enough, there were only Arab tourists here; practically no foreigners. It's a nice place to sit and enjoy the sun and ocean and to talk. Then we went to some little-known places like the fossil museum (really, one BIG sea creature fossil hanging up), and the aquariam (free the fish, please!!!). Then the rest of the day was for walking and relaxing at cafe after cafe. Finally, the clock struck 8 pm and we were off again to busy, crazy, crowded Cairo. Sadly, our train took like 3 hrs 15 minutes to get back!!!!!! I was bleary eyed at work
