The first thing we had done when we arrived in Maun was to try and book an overland safari through the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. As it turned out it had been a mistake not to do this earlier, as all safaris scheduled for the next couple of weeks were either already full or exorbitantly expensive. After a bit of hunting around we decided to rent both a guide and a car ourselves and leave flyers at all the local hostels asking for people to join us to bring down the price. This we did and headed off on our mokoro trip, hoping to come back to Maun and find lots of other travellers eager to come along. After 3 days in the Okavango Delta we returned to Maun to find that noone ... read more

“The journey not the arrival matters” T.S.Eliot(seems he might have been bitten by the travel as well as writing bug?).Now there is always something exhilarating about setting off on a new leg of a journey. There is the element of the unknown, new countryside to cast an eye over and who knows what awaits at the destination. But before getting anywhere in this World there is the little challenge of negotiating border posts. At the Mahembo border post we were effectively leaving Namibia behind and entering Botswana. This is probably the least busy border post anywhere on the planet and probably explains the friendly reception and hassle free stamping of passports and processing of bits of paper we experienced. An observation….the Botswana border posts are an absolute delight. They are clean, efficient and manned by friendly people who are genuinely excited to see people ... read more

There is something about the Giraffe that is a must see. When you come to Africa they are like the centrefold in a magazine. You go through the normal poses before you get to what you really want. They have the long neck, their tongue licking around their lips as they chomp on the leaves; they are wearing the giraffe pattern designer clothing. They even do a running shoot, which is in slow motion. All this is captured plus the giraffe centrefold spread with a trip to Botswana and the Chobe National Park. Chobe is in the north east of the country close to the borders of Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We did an overnight trip there from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). Basically no matter whoever you book with (unless its with the 5 star hotel) you ... read more

Due to camera memory card issues I'm unable to load any photos. In the knowledge that people don't really want to be reading pages of solid prose I shall keep this blog posting short and succinct. Needless to say, however, lots has happened: I now have a bleached afro and no bike. I set out from Lilongwe with three of the lads and we had some really good days of cycling including my longest of the trip which was 130km in one day. Once in Zambia we did a good bit of camping and I really began to enjoy the routine of getting up early, cycling, eating and sleeping. In fact, one of the things I really noticed about the cycling was the appetite I developed. I was always hungry and always felt the need to ... read more

June 2nd Just a bit more than a week before the World Cup starts, let the banter and teasing begin! Having a couple English on the trip now makes it a bit more of a competitive atmosphere in the truck which is a good laugh. That morning we woke up with the roosters and packed all our things on a truck that came to pick us and others up. Next we were packed like sardines into the truck and shipped off to the Okavango Delta to begin our camping adventure. It was about an hour and a half to the delta but it went by fast, albeit cold in the Botswanan morning. We arrived to see our transportation lined up on the river. Mokoros would be our mode of travel for the next couple days. They ... read more

May 31st The temperatures are dropping each morning we head south, and this particular morning was one of the first that I actually noticed and heeded to the cold. It was also this morning that we had seven new faces added to the trip to Cape Town. There were three couples joining us down, firstly is Bridget and Paul, she’s from South Africa and he’s from New Zealand. They have a friend traveling with them and he is half English and half Welsh, hence the name Dafydd, pronounced Davith. Another couple is David and Kelly, from South Africa and New Zealand, basically the reverse of the aforementioned couple! Then there is the all English couple, Luke and Hayley. The new group was formed that morning while the Southbound Six drank tea and chatted amongst them. We ... read more

Our Botswana trip started from Hong Kong to Johannesburg to Maun-Botswana and from there we again flew another light aircraft to Okavango Delta. The plane ride to Okavango was very beautiful and peaceful. Okavango Delta is the fourth longest inland river in Southwest Africa that starts from Angola (Cubango River) where it forms part border of Namibia in to Botswana and the river drains into the Moremi Game Reserve which is a National Park in Botswana, home to a vast number of wildlife species. The high season for game drive in Botswana would be from July to end of October when the Okavango Delta is at full flood and animals gather in all water sources. For bird lovers ideal time to go is November - February, but rainfall is expected. Lucky for us, we had a ... read more

Hey all! Back again for the semi-shortened version of our safari in Botswana. I marked it as the Okavango Delta but we actually began in Kasane, our first night of camping in Savuti, then headed into Moremi which is kind of the tip of the Delta. From there we headed back into Savuti and then last two nights in Chobe. Nonetheless, this was an amazing experience despite totally roughing it in the bush. A maximum of 2 showers in six days, layers upon layers of insect repellent and sunscreen. A lot of beans and toast along with sandwiches galore - avoid the palony. :) But thru it all, my friends and I had a blast and dealt with all the uncertainties really well. We left our hostel in the morning and took a van over to ... read more

6 Mar to 13 Mar Another for the Comeback List The original deal with this trip was that we travel until Patricia said stop. Then we would go back to Australia, make a final decision about where we will live for a while and build a house - perhaps. We have been travelling slowly, or trying to, and we have been covering most of the things that we agree we want to see and experience, but not all. So, the 'Comeback List' is developing. There are a few items on it already - walking the Milford Sound and a couple of other Kiwi tracks, walking Cradle Mountain in Tas, Burma (when Ang Saung Suu Kyi says it is OK to do so), Sri Lanka (when the Tamil thing is well over), Pakistan, Afghanistan (when the current ... read more

We are still adjusting to the time change. After not sleeping the night we got up for a 6 am start to do the border crossing from Botswana to Namibia via ferry. Chris, a local and the great guide, assisted us in getting to our border crossing and picked up. Along the way we enjoyed the country side with many neighboring villages. At one point we saw a family of 15 baboons on the road (the animals lay on the road here as the asphalt keeps them warm here). Just two minutes later we spotted a cyclist...Chris told us either the baboons would flee or attack. The border crossing was interesting. I think there were 5 other white people there. They have been working in Livingstone building another orphanage with a local church. There people that ... read more
