Brief greetings from Maun, Botswana - another Africa, the Africa of birds and beasts and bush fires. We met our truck, crew and companions at a lodge in the middle of nowhere. The bright orange truck is nearly a double decker, with all our gear – and that includes tents and a camp kitchen – underneath and us in seated splendour on top. The truck seats 26 and we are just 8 plus 3 crew and the space this gives us is really great. We are a mix of older Brits (3) and younger Aussies (5) and Zimbabweans (the crew). Our first stop was Khara Rhino Sancturay, on the edge of the Kalahari desert. A long, slow game drive showed us our first real African game. Rhino, of course, and lots of them close to the ... read more

We arrived in Kasane. Locke and I took a drive into town where I was able to pick up some more bug spray. Until this point, I am l am happy to report I only have 1 mosquito bite. I am starting to get itchy even though I shower most days. Between sporadic cold showers and some twinkling hot showers and my clothes smelling like nature, I am getting to the grimy point of my trip. The late afternoon came quickly where I was heading for a boat trip on the Chobe River to head into Chobe National Park. Linda and Coleman actually joined even though there was an additional cost to do this activity. Thank goodness there were 2 girls in their 20’s from London on board. I was able to sit with them and ... read more

My new buddy from the lodge in Gweta invited me back to the school in the morning. I was excited by the invite so of course I took him up on it. We visited the headmaster to get permission for me to greet the children and ask them some questions. The difference from the day prior is that school was in session and all the kids were in their uniforms. I visited some 5 year olds up to the 13 year olds. Some of the teachers were pleased as I spoke to the children in English and asked them about their studies. The little ones got high 5’s and were excited about my camera. The older ones needed some pushing to respond from their teachers as many of the students seemed shy. Overall, it was absolutely ... read more

The last 2 days have been amazing! I woke up to find the open safari vehicle was waiting to take Locke and me to the Okavango Delta. He headed over some dirt roads until we got to our mokora boats. For the 2 of us, there were a total of 4 local folks accompanying us into the Delta. One was Jonah, he was the group leader. There was a trainee who didn’t say much and 2 ladies. The ride took about 1.5 hours to our campsite. The ride was wonderful. You basically lie back and chill out in this narrow boat while starring at the thousands of water lilies. When I say campsite, there is nothing but open land. There were a ton of trees which provided a ton of shade. Considering the heat, this was ... read more

Dag allemaal !

Located in the northern panhandle of the Okavango Delta is Duba Plains Camp. An intimate 6 tented camp nestled on the edge of a floodplain, teh camp is set amongst a lovely grove of Ebony, fig and mangosteen trees. With a lovely fire place, deck and swimming pool, this camp is perfectly located for a host of wildlife encounters. Apart from the very exciting lion / buffalo encounters that Duba Plains is famous for, its their bird life that is just spectacular. Duba Island is predominatly a wetland with lots of water and plenty on swampy areas and little lagoons. Because of this, an abundance of different birds species frequent the area, however it was the beautiful Wattled Cranes (Grus carunculatus) that caught my eye. Today, Wattled Cranes are listed "endangered" and are becoming more difficult ... read more

Waiting for a hunt to take place requires luck, skill and patience - lots of it. During my stay at Duba Island, we were monitoring the Tsaro Prides attempt at hunting a buffalo. It was taking some time so we opted to take a quick drive and see what else we could find. Rounding a corner, the light starting to fade behind a huge storm cloud, we came across a fish trap. A fish trap is a small inlet which is about to dry up and a feeding frenzy was in place. A variety of birds had gathered to catch their feast! We parked, counted the variety of bitds that included yellow billed stalks, great egrets, open billed storks and African spoonbills to name a few. Whilts focusing on a bird, I noticed a pair of ... read more

Someplaces clearly hit our imagination more than others. I still have a pretty long wish list of places I dream to go, dog-sledging in Greenland, trekking Buthan, diving Cocos or PNG...and the list goes one. Okavango has been on my wishlist for a long time. I had to find the right person, well, you know Mari and I are sharing our life for nearly three years now (I'm lucky!)...the right time...this is always tricky...and the right deal at the right place. But we managed to do it, and what a trip! I've done few safaris so far, from South Africa to Tanzania and Uganda, but Okavango is in another league, or should I say the place we visited is in another world. We stay at Nxabega Tented Camp. The private concession is 70,000 hectares....to give you ... read more

When our 4x4 Isuzu with our very own canvas chateau on top, was delivered to our guest house in Pretoria and I knew then that everything we had planned, talked and dreamed about for the last few years was really now about to come to true. We were about to go camping in Africa----with the animals!! While Ian and Hennie (the owner) got immediately into the mechanics etc etc I just stood there recalling all the wonderful memories of camping around Aus (and remembering my initial thoughts of snakes and spiders)and then began to get very excited about the next and last stage of our “1st taste of Africa” trip, camping out there with elephants, giraffes and cats etc etc …….! Then suddenly I looked up at our bedroom on top and remembered why I had ... read more
